Foil Problem
« on: August 14, 2017, 02:34:32 PM »
Im searching around and can't seem to find an answer. I have a two color imprint, black and gold foil. Im using Green Galaxy Pitch Black and some reg plastisol foil adhesive (I can't remember which brand, we have had it forever). Foil sticks to the adhesive with no issues. But its also sticking to the waterbase black. No everywhere, just randomly throughout the design.  I thought the black was undercured, so I upped temp and dwell time in the dryer. Same issue... Any tips?

If they have penetrant and/or lubricant that should help. If not try glycerin and high speed mixer. A little H20 as well

If any of the waterbase ink is sitting on top of the garment - the foil will want to try and stick to it....

Do what Tony suggested - or - make sure your black is thin enough to push into the fabric and print wet on wet onto the back of the foil screen.  Do not flash the black before printing the foil.  This will assist in getting the black into the garment.

FYI, there is foil resist on the market for waterbase inks for just this reason.

Yep, I'm sure along with the penetrant I would bump your mesh up higher and crank it in. your issue is leaving too much ink on top. I have only used foil resist in plastisols. Thanks colin for the info

Green Galaxy is an HSA product which is going to be much more likely to have foil adhere.

I'd go with a standard WB black if possible.

the reason i love this place.... heading in the back to test right now. I have some regular waterbase here that Ill try. I also happen to have some penetrant as well. We do very little waterbase here, just the once in a while towel job or discharge job. So when something throws me for a loop, I have no clue what to do!

we used this:

https://sourceone.nazdar.com/P/3846/Additives-for-9500-AquaPrint-II-Ready-for-Use-RFU-Screen-Ink-Penetrant

again, we do not do much waterbase stuff here. so it was limited to what i had laying around. but it worked out really well. especially in a pinch.

We ran these on our manual as they were an odd shaped tote that wouldnt fit on our two sizes of auto platens. waterbase black was on a 160 with about 5% of the additive. i may have even been a little heavy on the penetrant as its pretty much water, oops. the foil adhesive was on a 110. black was single stroked with some pretty good pressure and foil adhesive was double stroked.

Hey Clever Print, use regular black W.B.Ink, with a little of penetrant , when printing with foil try to void heavy W.B.Inks because foil tend to adhere randomly on the heavy spots.
