Sculptures
(1/1)
Pangea:
I'm doing a street fair this weekend and was thinking about recreating a sculpture that's in the area as embroidery on a hat. It's basically a 20' tall metal letter/complex curve. Any reason I should be worried about this being some type of infringement?
ebscreen:
First thought is that public art is, well, public.
But I recall a fiasco regarding the "I (heart) NY" piece being printed.

The I heart NY is trademarked by the state of NY or the city

Which weirds me out as both are also technically public entities.
Do they make revenue off the bumper stickers and shirts then?
rusty:
Yeah, they make a good chunk of change licensing it to other companies and vendors around the world. Besides shirts and coffee Mugs, it’s gone on credit cards, water bottles, etc.
it’s the best known image associated with NYC and I’m sure they aren't to keen on other cities/corporations copying it.
They don’t seem to go after small variations but aggressively go after big companies like adidas when they try to use it or a variation in a campaign or something.
And funny enough, the guy who designed it, Milton Glaser never got paid for it.
Sorry for derail
