I've always preferred bitmap tiffs out of Photoshop for distress patterns, overlaying the image before output. All those points in a vector one annoy me.

Our oldest distress pattern was printing out a full page of black out of a laser printer (not inkjet) then crushing the page into a ball, and flattening it out, lots of great white cracks. Scan it in, invert it so the white cracks are black, save as a bitmap. In Illustrator, if you have an image on a white background, overlay the bitmap and color it white, and voila!
