Check out this video regarding how we solve this problem, the air hole is created by simply taking a pair of scissors and creating the hole by plunging them through the lid, very simple.

Greg, thanks. We got the idea for the air hole from your video a while back haha, so thanks for that. I don't think the debris is from the hole I think it's coming from somewhere else...

The 5's have been working great other than the mystery debris, and as Pierre mentioned we could up to five 5-gallons at a time.. so could get back on the savings bandwagon there.

I assume you are not forcing the hole into the lid while it sits on the pail, right?
We never had debris in our emulsion apart from last year which turned out to be some sort of an insect. And for stirring the emulsion we use plastic spatulas.
