Title: 4880 Ink, its time to replace, but with what?
Post by: shellyky on January 22, 2013, 11:44:55 AM
I have been using the ryonet black max 220ml x 8 but it's about $800.....i know there are more cheeaper options out there.... so what are they? I need to order within the next 2 days...Thank you!

POST LINKS ON WHAT I NEED TO BUY SPECIFICALLY :) lol

(i do have the chip resetter and just had to use it because it wouldn't let me print anymore from being too low...now im freaking out because they were indeed light as a feather, felt like maybe 1/2" tops of ink in there)

That's absurd. Go to inkjetcars.com or inksupply.com. They both sell refillable cartridges and ink. I'm just setting up a 4800 I picked up, which will run one black and 7 with cleaning fluid. I currently run a 1400 with just one head, no longer using the all black (better halftones, get your loupe out). Solid blacks are just fine. I was paying $150 everytime I refilled ($25 per cart) until I found this. A 30 dollar pint of dye based black will fill the 13 ml cartridges up to 36 times. That's considerable...

I agree go with one head ink rest cleaning solution. Everytime the printer performs a head cleaning it will use up ink from all heads, why waste it on valuable ink. I get my ink from Garmentdecoratingsupply.com (http://Garmentdecoratingsupply.com) 1 liter (1,000) ml for $146. They also sell the cleaning solution dirt cheap.

I've been very pleased wit the durability of the Bohica ink & film that Lee's Screen Supply in Houston sells. I had switched from something else that was coming off on the emulsion if it wasn't utterly & completely dry, and this stuf fixed me right up.

For those who don't know, Bohica stands for Bend Over Here It Comes Again.

I thought that was a weird brand name, but that wasn't a joke -- I've been using the stuff for a couple of years.

I still ain't ever gonna order any of that "Icky, Stanky Oogy Stinky Poo" ink remover, no matter how good it is.  :D

We just refill our All Black cartridges with a syringe and use the chip resetter.

Happy hunting!

Mike, that sounds pricey. I pay $18.00 per pint, (I thought it was $30, but I just checked) 2 of those is a quart, just under a liter. (I know you know that).

Yea it is pricey but I have been using his since he left Fresners, and it has always worked awesome. This was before all these other guys came out with cheaper inks and I have just been a bit nervous switching ink with all the headaches I already get from these epsons. Maybe tho its time.

Are you running AccuRIP? (I was assuming that based on your replacement cost from Ryonet) I'm about to run one cartridge (the black one) with the dye-based black, and the rest with cleaning fluid. As mentioned earlier, when the printer does it's automatic head cleaning, you'll only waste ink from one cartridge instead of all 8. If you're in AccuRIP, then go to "Set Up" under the file menu, make sure Multi-Black is checked, then only the black cartridge
checked. Cyan, Lt. Cyan, Magenta, Lt. Magenta, Lt. Black and Lt. Lt. Black all unchecked. I got this from one of the other members, I believe it's correct. I'll know better tomorrow when I get ours set up.

Films Direct is real good ink. You can do as many black cart as you want and fill them as needed. I use one on mine.
http://www.filmdirectonline.com/products/Multi-Black-Large-Format-Ink-Kit.html (http://www.filmdirectonline.com/products/Multi-Black-Large-Format-Ink-Kit.html)

Then all I do is buy ink when I need it.

I purchase cartridges and ink for my 4880 from macroenter.com ... We are running all cartridges filled with black ink.

Running them dry will damage the print head (learned from experience $$). Do yourself a favor by not "turning off" print heads or running them dry.

Hence why filling them with cleaning solution is recommended. I also heard that running one ink and the rest cleaning solution keeps the heat down and extends the over all life of the heads. Not sure if true but makes sense for those shops running massive amounts of film a day.

I got this method from 2 folks running this way every day, so I trust it. Like I said, I'll be setting ours up tomorrow. I get my black ink from inksupply.com, but I got the carts from inkjetcarts.com.  The ink is    http://www.inksupply.com/product-details.cfm?pn=D2-PT-K (http://www.inksupply.com/product-details.cfm?pn=D2-PT-K)

others run all 8 heads with the black, either way, you're still going to save a fortune on ink. Pierre mentioned that he finds the quality of the halftones and the line work is superior using one head. We use our 1400 this way now, and it is better than the 6 heads, IMHO.

Call them, he is a super nice guy and knows his ink.  Yes, you run black in all heads and switch which head you use periodically, keeps all heads working correctly.  Epson inks cost me about $1200 to replace, this system costs me about $50 to refill.

Steve, just so you know the ink you linked to is dye based, and the 4800's come stock as pigment based. I switched
the black in my 4000 without a hitch, but I've heard they can have issues if you don't flush between.

Either way, for us, dye based is the way to go. We go through a lot of ink and the price difference is remarkable.
From what I've seen, dye based is darker anyways.

Dye based is the ink that AccuRIP recommended I think (it was a couple of years ago now) and it does a great job. I will be sure to give it a good flush, thanks for the tip.

FWIW I didn't flush my 4000 when switching to dyebase and had no problems. Probably just
another Epson scare tactic.

one more quick question...

what is the purpose of the clear carts?  Could I not just buy the bulk ink and inject it into the little 'ink hole' where they plug in with an ink syringe?  i noticed ryonet now sells their black max in bulk liter bottle...i emailed them but they are beating around the bush about it LOL obviously they want me to spend 800 but elude to the fact that i can infact do that if one had a resetter...

The clear solution goes in to the un used heads. It is there to keep the head from drying up, keeps it cool and also is printed during head cleans. If its all ink in those heads then every head prints the expensive ink during head cleans. Some still use all carts for ink many do not. When I talked to Caveman (I forget his real name) from Cadlink he told me the printer will not print any faster with one black ink or all. He also backed up what Pierre figured out, your crispness is better with one head instead of all black, something to do with the fact that having hundreds of nozzles in perfect alignment is impossible.

inksupply.com is what I use.  Gallon of ink for $100.  Got my clear tanks off ebay.  I think the reason to get the clear carts is to monitor ink levels more accurately especially with a chip resetter. Never tried printing from just one head, might give that a shot.  If it works better for detail I might pull the other carts and "reclaim" my black ink and fill with solution.
Title: Re: 4880 Ink, its time to replace, but with what?
Post by: Sbrem on January 24, 2013, 11:14:00 AM
By the way, if you print from one head in AccuRIP, you will want to change the resolution perhaps. 1440 x 1440 makes a nice black, but takes a long time to print. 1440 x 720 is considerably faster, but you would need to increase the droplet size. Our 1400 went from a droplet size of 6 for all six heads printing, to a droplet size of 11 with one head printing. I'll be setting up our 4800 over the weekend, and will post my results. As for the clear cartridges, you can see how much ink is left, as opposed to the printer telling you how much ink you have left.

...not to steer this off too far from the original question, but for those of you that have the 4880 or 4900, what is the largest film size you can use in the paper tray? I have been trying to google this, but its not in any specs I can find.

...I also read that I could make this (or any printer) wireless, through use of an additional router. Anyone do this?

I wouldn't use sheets, get a roll.  I use a 13" wide roll, and I am going to start keeping a 17" wide on hand for times it's needed.

..Im still working with a 1400, but a larger one is in the plan for 2013, and Im trying to narrow down my options. One factor, for me and my space, is the sheet size that the paper tray can accomodate.

..so will the tray hold some sheets of 17X??, or even 13x19? And in your case Brad, why use the roll? Or better yet, why NOT use the tray?
Title: Re: 4880 Ink, its time to replace, but with what?

because with the roll I can cut them to length, I save between 2-8 inches every film I print.  It saves time with less grouping.  I used to use sheets in the 3000, I am glad to be using a roll feed now..less babysitting.

are all you guys with the 4800 using the waterproof film or the standard film with the dye inks? We are moving up from a 1400 to a 4800. I really like the refill carts I got from ebay for my 1400's. I may snag some for the 4800 as well. I have to try the two head / cleaning solution thing, great idea.

That`s me. Our 4880 is wireless, well it`s hooked up to our airport over which it`s receives all the data coming from our Wasatch RIP. The biggest sheets the tray can hold is A2 which is 23.4" x 16.5".
