Who has the best deals on a 17" printer? Would like to upgrade or if someone has one they want to get rid of let me know as well.

I did there is nothing here. Epson has a 3880 for $995 but that is still a lil steep.

I did find a Epson 4000 but how old is that? Are RIPs available for the 4000? How about cartridges etc.. Any info on this printer would be great.

Epson 3000 is going to be the old standby for this size, likely the least expensive.
Beware that the 1520 (I think?) will take 17" wide film but only prints to 13".
My 3000 might be for sale once I get a 4880 in here.

The x000 series are going to all be the dye based older print engine Epsons. Workhorses,
GhostScript works perfectly with them, a little slow and temper-mental.
The x600-x800 are the next step up. Pigment based (waterproof film required) little faster
and less touchy. Ink is considerably more expensive, some cartridges have chips that must be fooled
to refill/use all black, most commercial RIPs support this series.
x880 is the newest (for us) series. Same as above but faster and supposedly clog less. Remains
to be seen.

I have a couple of customers who run the 3000 model and it is very similar to the 4800 and 4880, but the one problem they both have with it is when they run rolls of film it always feeds an extra few inches before and after every print and waste their film. If you just use the cut 13x19 or 11x17 sheets you this should be a non-issue.

I would recommend against using film with the 3000, the feed just isn't built for it like the
larger printers.
As for what RIPs work with what, you'd have to check with the manufacturer of the RIP.

Ok I will do a little more research. One thing though if someone knows. Can you use refillable cartridges with the 4000? I have them in my 1400 and dont have any problems. I hear about chip resetters and never had to deal with that on my 1400.

Yeah, no roll feed with the 3k, it's like a glorified tp roll, no good for films and bound to waste a lot of media. Stick with sheets.
You can use refillables in anything I believe. It may actually be a little easier to use them on the later models with their lack of chip technology. But a chip resetter is handy for not just the carts but the waste tank as well.
I sold our 3k, which was built by a fella who goes by Sigmo, known for his service to us screen printers and it was a seriously reliable machine. I just really wanted roll feed/auto-cut so I could walk away after sending seps to the rip.
The shop that bought ours is selling it again as they recently updated themselves and offered it back to me at a smokin' deal, pm me if you want me to pass on their info. When I sold it to them it came with a copy of FastRip (upgradeable to FilmMaker). for windows.
And seriously WTF is up with the reply box drifting left into the void?

I could possibly be talked into parting with our 3000 since we upgraded to a 4800. If you can find a deal, it is worth a little extra. If you are interested in the 3000 I have 5-6 or maybe even more cartridges I would throw in with it. They are 110ml and you should be good for a year at least with that. We were getting about three months out of one cart at about 10 films per day.
The ink for them is dirt cheap too, about $6 each.

I have all refillable cartridges and I only run two blacks. Prints just fine and fast enough for what we need.

Had to get a chip resetter for my R1800, not a big deal. The resetter cost 6 bucks. It can reset real epson carts as well if you can find a way to refill them.

Clear ink in 6 and black in two of them.

4000 is a great printer, you can run refillables and get some really good deals. Wasatch RIP for preference.

Keep an eye on craigslist nation wide and you'll find a 4000/4800/4880 for less than $200 bucks. I see them all the time. i've not yet got one as the ink costs $800 for an 8 cart 200ml set.
Use search tempest or other free craigslist search tool. Shipping won't be more than $100
Had to get a chip resetter for my R1800, not a big deal. The resetter cost 6 bucks. It can reset real epson carts as well if you can find a way to refill them.
You refill the stock carts with the vacumn method. Fill the syringe, then insert and pull on the plunger, when you let go the cart pulls the ink in. Repeat 2-3 times till the cart is full.

On RIPs.. Accurip handles just about all 'worthy' Epson printers all the way back to the 3000 and then some. Check their site for the full list.
