How long are some you closing your doors for Christmas? we are going a week this year for the first time in a long time, we need to recharge and clean up the shop.

I play it by ear, but being a one-man-show, I have flexibility. You are not that dissimilar.
When I worked at Andy's, we closed for 2 weeks (one man's holiday break is another's 2 week layoff)
Actually, in those 2 weeks, he still often had skeleton crews come in to take care of urgent production.
I also am expecting a few last-minute one-off gift requests on the 24th.

Shutting down from 22nd - 1st of Jan.

This year I'll close the 17th and reopen Jan 7th. We'll get out current orders the week of the 17th to 21st. Any orders placed at that time will be started on the 7th.
I always take whatever two weeks my kids are on break off.

We have always done it. We work a half day on Christmas Eve, but since that's a Monday this year, we aren't having everyone come in for a half day after the weekend. So end of day 12/21 and back on 1/2/19. My partner and I check email through the week, and he's close enough to come in for the mail.

the 21st will be our last day...we're planning to come back in on the 4th. I seriously need the break after the last 2 days.

employees last day is the 21st. Ill be popping in the following week after Christmas, we always get calls for orders normally and I need to catch up on desk work, good time to do it since no one is around.

I always feel the most killed after December and its historically not even our busy month as far as revenue but some how it just kicks our ass ever year.

Because you're doing 4 weeks of work in 3 weeks...same here, it's a solid month, but crap, it just kicks our ass. Also it doesn't help that so much Amazon crap is on the truck our stuff is getting lost or sent to the wrong places.

The plan was to shut down 26th to the 2nd, but a coffee customer asked about bringing their family by during that time to try some of our coffees. So I figure if there's one than there's prob more.

Inventory time, whu hoo! (insert sarcasm icon). Then my annual 2-3 days of completely
going over the embroidery machines. I can handle that if nobody bothers me.

Trying our best to get last minute orders out and move other orders to next year, had a customer call yesterday right at closing telling me I'm on my way, but hey it is what it is and I won't complain we could be doing nothing.

This year we close Christmas Eve and day, New Year's Eve. Holiday potluck next Friday, along with ugly sweaters that day. Otherwise business as usual. Our market is opposite a lot of yours.

Same situation here, we've been telling our customers for the past month. And we usually stay slow into February, we run shorter hours and get caught up on a load of other business stuff through the winter. then the spring rush comes and it's just bananas until next Christmas. Love the winter time!

We closed production after 12/11 and office shut down 12/13. Tied some loose ends 12/14 and writing this from medellin. Reopen 12/26.
Honestly im cool off walk in christmas orders, they are always a wreck and ups is late with the shipments. We message our email list 2-3 times about the closure so our core customers are taken care of. Think i will do it this way every year.
Note we ran a lot of ot to book it early and its worth it imo

I'm a one guy shop out in the middle of nowhere, so customers never come here. I don't say I'm closed... but I'll be at the beach part of the time. The shop phone is my cell, so customers won't know if I'm in the shop or drinking a beer in a chair on the sand. Well, except for the slurred speech and waves. Like some other folks have said it's a good clean up time when I'm here. I also look over the numbers from the past year and try to see where I need to make adjustments. My website needs updating, so I'll work on that too. Things will start to pick up in February and we'll be off to the races again.
