Equipment / Work Horse Quartz conveyor dryers... worth it?
« Last post by spencer_L&KC on April 06, 2024, 01:42:43 PM »
hey all, I am building a brand new multi-purpose building, split between my print shop and living space, getting ready to break ground on the property in about a month. we will be getting about 1,600sqft for the shop/studio and will be upgrading to a new conveyor dryer when we move in. we currently have a BBC Big Buddy 24"x8' conveyor and the business is growing. I am tired of having to be creative with how to load garments onto the belt and also with how the outsides of the belt are not getting as evenly heated as the center. I know BBC is known for their even heat distribution, but this dryer has a good 20-30deg difference within just a few inches. it drives me nuts to be honest.

needless to say it is time to upgrade to a 36" or even 40" wide dryer, and a longer one as well. we really want the BBC Aeolus 36"x12' dryer, but that $18K price tag is just nuts. BBC is local to me too, about a 40 min drive away, so picking it up directly from them is a plus. anyway, because of that insane price we are obviously considering other options. we have been looking at Anatol and Work Horse as well and the WH dryers just seem too good to be true. their Quartz 40"x13' dryers is listed at $8.6K, which is almost $10K less than the comparable sized BBC Aeolus dryer. how can there be that much of a price difference?

so I suppose I am looking for any feedback from anyone here who has run jobs on a WH Quartz conveyor. see questions below:

how is the overall build quality of the dryer?

will the quartz lamps run my electric bill up?

how accessible are the replaceable lamps and will we need to worry about this lamp type being fazed out in 5-10 years making replacing them impossible to obtain later on?

we are just looking to avoid upgrading to a dryer that we will regret later on. i know WH makes quality equipment, but any feedback that could help us make more informed decision would be greatly appreciated. my apologies for the long winded post, but just wanted to explain where we are at currently in our research. I will do some more searching on this board to see if these dryers have been discussed in any detail, but what I have seen so far is just questions from users whos threads have not been replied to. if you have any info/opinions on these dryers, let it be known!

thanks for reading!

General Heat Seal / Re: tape for heat pressing patches

I got good heat tape at cheaper prices online from Temu.
Remember, it has been advised to not install and use the Temu app on the phone.
But also, take a little time and figure just how much it adds to the actual job. It's probably pennies, that you can absorb into your total cost and figure into your price easily.
Don't become "penny wise and pound foolish". It will eventually bite you in the butt.

Oh, and I don't think it's called transfer tape, as that's what's used to apply vinyl graphics. Just look for heat tape.

I could be wrong but I think it's Kapton tape used in electronics.

thank you both for the replies. I suppose an $8 roll isn't really much considering how long the rolls are. I just like the idea of using cheap painters tape because it can be found locally just about anywhere and is even less expensive. we aren't doing transfers using the painters tape though, just heat pressing patches so maybe thats why it hasn't caused me any issues? it peels right off and leaves no residue behind. I was surprised by this because of the thermal/heat tape that everyone uses. that made me think it was was necessary, but if the painters tape is working, why even bother with the thermal stuff?

I think I am going to get a roll of thermal tape and do some side by side testing.

Mid Journey has a tab where you can look at Google examples of a similar nature. (It doesn’t say) of those are what it’s pulling from.

My partner and I have been working 60 hours a week together for 32 years, and are still good friends, brothers almost.

This above is how business with a partner should go, but we all know a lot never make it that far!

Congrats!

What was your revenue and what did you get for the business if you don't mind? I've been asked 2 times in the last month to sell.  Im always curious what it might be worth.

Unfortunately, in our case, it was a bit of a fire sale, as I mentioned, the last few years have not been kind. It wasn't great, but I'm satisfied, as I was already set for retirement. I really can't divulge the amount. We were a little under 700K last year, with just 4 people doing everything. The best part is, no more worrying, or having the burden on our shoulders anymore of all the myriad details that stay in your head night and day. Still, there is a touch of sadness about it being over, but only a touch. My partner and I have been working 60 hours a week together for 32 years, and are still good friends, brothers almost.

The output is unique, but the reference materials are in the public domain I’d imagine.

Transfer Express, and I'm sure others, sell a blue tape that is heat resistant, especially for this purpose.

Steve

thanks for the reply! yeah I know the transfer tapes are available in brown/orange and green/blue, but I am curious if others have found anything that works as well. maybe something cheaper. thanks again.
