Title: New manual press
Post by: mk162 on May 17, 2012, 09:24:15 AM
I also picked up a new/used manual press last week.  We had a 6/4 and it was never used for more than 1 color anymore, so I ditched it and went single color for printing sleeves and pockets if needed.

Got a good deal on it and I had most of the lumber to toss together a table for the base so it's a win/win.

similar thinking here . . . we picked one up a while back, but have not set it up yet. The Rototex makes a nice shelf to put stuff on around the press and hang the shirts and coats on!!!  ;D

Not as far fetched as it sounds.
I think that there are systems out there that only hold one screen at a time, but are capable of doing multi color prints due to a quick change system.

I know I described visiting a quite large local place (closed now) that had about 3 stations where the platen was a plexiglass box with a light bulb inside and they printed multiple colors one at a time, fully curing each one and running back around using the light bulb for lineup.  They claimed it was more efficient.

I didn't say so to their face, but even as I was on a start-up with a POS press, I thought it was stupid.  Wonder if that contributed to them going out of business.

Been there, done that.
"light table" boards are great for small run multicolor transfer work! The translucent paper is perfect for that.

Thats right Andy.....except the best use of that method is as a sample press. Screens kept in a rolling rack and are pre-registered. This was before the Chameleon but when perfected worked just as well, cost a crap ton less, and saved a lot space. Faster also.

I did get some bracket adapters from Spot Color Supply that will allow any M&R platen to bolt to this press.  1 set of platens...a lot less work.

Also, when I ordered platens for the auto, i ordered 1 extra in case we baked one under the flash unit.  I wouldn't have to stop production, I could just pop the new one on and fix the burnt one.  That platen now has a home.

I may get rid of my 6 color to free up some room. Can you send me the details?

I took an old four color manual apart one time basically removed everything except for the table carasoul put a piece of round cut plywood on top and we used it next to the auto as a lazy Susan for stacked shirts, you could load three stacks at a time and simply spin the carasoul when one stack ran out. We didn't have room for it in our newer place tho.

eyeballin' a 4/4 Hopkins for 700.00 dont really need it but it's only 700 bucks... and a National 6/6 for 750.00 , I could turn a profit on both of them. The wifey might kick me in the nuts though I even mention springing another press.  I really need an auto.

And with your stairs and no freight elevator, you have a perfect location for branching out into used equipment sales! LOL!

Does any manu make a 4 color 1 station tabletop press with micros that take a 23" auto screen?

Call and ask Workhorse, but since the Odyssey is said to take a 32 inch screen, even if that is length, it should still easily cover your 23" (what I assume is ) width

I just can't stand not to have old timey redundency. Me and machines have a checkered history. Worst case is put the old manual in the corner and wait till it's a relic and make an art display out of it.

Best case is whent the auto craps out, hurry up and finish the job on the manual to make the absurd due date they gave you,and then go fix the auto.

But I'm not right in the head.

I just found a 1 station workhorse press to compliment my 8/8.  It is only about 45 minutes from my house, never used and very, very nicely priced.  I am going to head down and get it just for those times I need to run some on ecolor backs or sleeves or something.  The best part is that all my workhorse platens should slide right on.

This press has been great so far.  It's awesome for pockets and sleeves.  I have a job with 65 pcs and I hate changing over the platens on the auto, so toss one on here and print away.  I can be done with the job in less time than it takes to change the pallets over and back...and setup the job and take it down.  Setups are easier on manuals.

That was my goal.  My 14 year old is going to be working in the shop this summer and now that I have a 54 inch dryer we could be running fronts and backs at the same time!  That along with doing simple one color things on this small press would be great.  It will pay for itself the first week.  I am glad that you started this post.

Mine will pay for itself when I sell off the other stuff I got with it.  Anybody need a 220v flash unit?

Interestingly, there was a thread here some time back which was just the opposite, and more than one owner of an auto was telling me that their manual was gathering dust!

Finally had a free day to run and pick up my new 1 color press.  I spent yesterday fabbing up a nice stand for it and painted the stand to match my 8/8 workhorse.  This is one very nicely built little 1 color press.  It will see action on Monday with a multi color front and a single color back job.  We will be able to run one down the left side of the dryer and the other down the right side!

I built a wooden table for mine.  I am actually going to put another section on the top for the telephone, job ticket, and press wipe/paper towels.  I'll post some pics when I am done with it
