Title: Printing a bolt of fabric video
Post by: TCT on December 29, 2013, 08:00:44 PM
Not sure if this is the right place to post this or not(please move it if necessary) but I found it rather interesting. In another post I explained how fortunate I was to see a dozen or so print shops in Portugal recently. I got to go to a factory that actually prints on the bolts of fabric, which was cool. May be old news for some people, but I personally never really thought about how they did it. Here is a video(crappy, sorry and can SOMEONE PLEASE help me with how to post a video!)-

So basically that is like a 8 color machine. Those "cylinders" are like the screen. Behind where I took the video from is where the ink drums are. They are 55gal. or so drums with a pump in them, ink gets pumped from the drum, under the walking/access path on the side of the machine and comes out inside those printing cylinders. Kinda unfortunate it was only a 1 color print when I was there. The dryer was friggin' HUGE and when it comes out there are these wild folding arms that drape it back and forth(sorry no video). They showed me where they keep their cataloged printing "cylinders"(like we save screens for re prints) it was a huge space probably 25' x 150' with those things stacked floor to ceiling, wall to wall. Crazy stuff once again!

I think the mesh are made out of metal.

I hope someone on this forum knows what they use to push the ink through the mesh in the following youtube clip.

I saw three of those style belt printers on my trip well two, one was busted and used as a shelf :)
Only one of them was running while I was there, but it was printing something for a clothing line out of Paris so I was asked not to take pic of it.

That video has more of what the folding and packing of the books was like that I didn't get footage of.

How do you get the video in line like that?!

There is a magnet under the belt that forces a steel rod across the mesh. The diameter of the rod is changed to determine how much ink is deposited just like the durometer is changed on a urethane squeegee blade.

I tried to talk smack about your link posting and then I couldn't do any better.

I can laugh at myself. :p
