Title: Well, How's the Show? ISS Long Beach
Post by: alan802 on January 17, 2014, 02:51:44 PM
As I sit here trying to figure out how to fix a mistake our data entry person made that made us print the wrong color on 72 shirts, I'm wondering how the show is.  I thought this was the year I would make it there but as usual, seems like Murph's Law wins again.  Maybe some of you lucky turds can make us all a little more jealous and tell us all the cool stuff.  I heard the original #1 Gauntlet is there.  Anything new that none of us have seen or heard about yet?

Me too, wishing I was at the show getting to meet everyone..... We are stuck here waiting for the broncos vs ne game as if the broncos win we are printing shirts for Nike....... We have a couple different official shirt designs to print if they win so we are stuck here. Anyone have any updates? Hoffman told me this week when he was here the #1 gauntlet is there, that they tested it at the factory after refurbishing it and it was running 80 doz/hr LOL

Show is ok. It's kinda weird we usually walk half the show fri and the other half the show on sat.
We made it through the whole show in one day today.
Lots if people here so it almost seemed like we were being pushed by the tide.
We didn't really stop at booths we wanted to spend a bunch of time at (Murakami, stretch, M&r) so I think well do that tomorrow.

We spent a few minutes in the screen room at M&R. It was super packed.

We like the Sherlock squeegee washer. Might pick one up in the spring. The new water base ink from Ryonet looks amazing.

M&R has a new ir flash where they put three of them together over a stand alone conveyer that looked interesting. Not sure what for but interesting.

If I'm not mistaken the unikote from M&r is different from last year.

Apparently people are still interested in "bling".. At least lots of booths have it.

Javelin looks redesigned. Anatol has a small tag press I haven't seen before although it looks to short and like the shirts would drag on the floor. Maybe put some cardboard boxes down?

On the one M&R cts screens I saw it had some banding on the all black areas of the art, all the way down the screen. It was pretty minimal but banding none the less (banding like when your ink jet head is clogged)
Basically small lines where there is suppose to be black but there is not.
I checked the art file on the computer and it wasn't in the art.
The black ink doesn't seem very opaque but the screens I saw that were washed out looked fine, so maybe that stuff isn't a big deal. If it was film it would be a problem though.
I'd like to see some heavy eom stencils like a N102 with some sharp lines in the art out putted as a screen.

They have an og gauntlet there. Looks awesome!

That's it for today. I'm beat!

Inkbrigade, the javelin you're talking about is (I believe) the new sabre press from workhorse. All electric, runs off a tablet

Dude your test works....How in the h*ll do you have time to run this??? just kidding good to hear from ya and I for one will be checking in regularly. Hope all is well and your busy

You are correct sir. A nice step for them.

M&R actually had a Gauntlet 1 from '87 that chugging along like a classic mustang.

Only other random thing I noticed this year is I did not see TAS. But I may of just missed them.

Had a great time at King's Fish House last night meeting board friends, old and new.

See ya at the show!

Yep, once again, a huge thanks to Rich Hoffman sponsoring us stuffing our faces while talking shop.
A large enough turnout  that I didn't even get to greet, (or even meet) at least a half dozen folks!

I hope to be able to see some more members today at 11 and 3 by, (not in) the M&R booth. The corner near Hirsch, behind their screen room. They also have a large screen displaying a video of the world record speed loading and printing. The walkway is very large there so we have space.

Headed back to LAX for a red eye flight home after a GREAT ISS Long Beach.

Over 300 total in my workshop and classes.  A specail Thanks to those of you who attended more than 1 or 2 plus special hugs and kisses to the couple who did all 5.

I meet several shirtboard members for the first time yet already  consider you to be old friends as we shared stories of how we used to do it along with the new and hopefully improved stuff on the horizon.

Going to be in Atlantic City in 6 weeks for the next ISS show and I'm sure Sam will take the lead in putting together that dinner get together event.

Keep on printing,

~Kitson

If anyone is attending on Sunday, make sure to look for the Nazdar Source One booth. As far as I know, (They have been and still are) printing TheShirtBoard tees for members but you have to check into it and ask for one. I'm sure they are also printing other samples more glitzy most of the time.

That is strange. Why would they need a booth. They could just call screen printers in the areas they want to have contract printers.

I've heard nightmare stories about printing for them. Maybe they burned through enough printers and are looking for new printers?

Spent some more time with the M&r ste. I was under the impression the two head, if one went down you could use it as a one head. That is NOT the case. Getting a two head makes is faster only. It's not for redundancy.
Apparently the exposure bar you can change the timing for thicker stencils. So if your doing a cap film or something you run it slower under the exposure bar. M&R has a excel file listing suggested exposure times with different emulsions and mesh counts. So that would be a good starting point.
Overall I'm really impressed with the system.

First off I would like to thank Mr. Hoffman for sponsoring the TSB dinner. While I would be happy to pay for my dinner I appreciate all M&R does to help create such a cool scene for us at Long Beach. The opportunity to meet and speak with fellow printers is invaluable. I always walk away with a new technique or equipment tip. I cannot express my gratitude enough. I know that a free meal does help make the moment. I think I learned something... what could be better?

I too am one of those who, as a smaller shop, keeps looking at all electric presses. The Sabre was very interesting. It does require air. I believe the rep was talking 3 cfm. Much lower and much more manageable than some other presses. I am a small shop and that sort of air requirement is much more applicable to my situation. But air is still a requirement. Not necessarily something to put a small shop off, but not quite air free. The rep said the demo press had run through the equivalent of a million impressions. Some of those were run with a small pancake compressor. Interesting. While I have no desire to run a press on a compressor like that it is an intriguing concept. Less cfm, but a solid looking machine .

Part of what's so cool about hitting a show is all the diversity of presses you will see. Yes, there were a lot of sublimation and embroidery booths. But most of the major players in screen printing were showing off their wares. Anatol has the Volt. Which is all electric. Interesting drive on the lift. An eccentric gear drive. Quiet too. Yo, dudes (anatol). Make me feel a little more comfortable with support and parts and you could own the niche!

Of course I kept cycling by the M&R booth. The Diamondback is just a sweet machine. Where are the rotary screw compressor manufacturers at the show? I keep hitting Craigslist but I'm not seeing what I need nor the Mattei vane compressor that JBlue recommends...  :) Dang. With what I want from M&R it's a commercial space or nothing. I'm such a wimp. Ooooh. I want to step up.  I should step up? Either that or dig a small compressor pit in my backyard :)

The item that struck me the most wasn't on the floor. I don't even f with foil anymore. But S Roque has a hands free foil station in their catalogue. whoa. After my heat press experience and some of the comments posted I really want to see some video of this running. Automatic foil application. Not in my realm, but waaay intriguing. Who has one? Let's see it.

What can I say. My screen printing life has gone up and down. But still, hitting Long Beach is always inspiring. There is always something new and all of the large garment distributors are represented. Who knows? You might even meet Senor Frog. What could be better?

Thank you to all and to all a good night.

Bingo!!

The shows are flooded with newbies that have no idea just how bad it is to print for them.

The show was awesome this year!!

Great to see old friends and meet some new faces.

LOL. After I left you on Sunday John I went by there and looked. They were looking for new blood. Asked me about the shop and its capabilities. I had to block my badge like you did so they would not scan it.....lol

What was fun was drinking with everyone from the boards. Sam made it out from back east and Kel made it up from SD (yes we got hammered together again). As usual always fun BS'ing with Brian and Megan. It is nice hanging and talking shop with people that have a good business attitude.

That's one reason I usually use a fake name, you know , like Lou Stules. They act like they know you and call you Lou. And when they call the shop trying to reach you...the PA page raises eyebrows too

It was a great show. Had a nice time putting names to faces, connecting with friends, making new, looking at all the great new equipment and products. Even got Megan to buy some stuff for the shop. Sat in some great classes and enjoyed talking with others and their experiences. Lastly thanks to all the vendors and reps who took the time to show products and how they worked.

As always a huge thank you to Rich for Friday's diner.

Jblue, were you able to try the Diazo on Sunday?

Only bummer was the 30 hours it took to get home with broken planes (I would have chanced it) and missed connections.

No. They forgot to coat a screen with a diazo emulsion. He took the film and when he gets back to Chicago he is going to burn it and send me either the screen or some pics with a loop. It does show some real promise on getting out what we were looking for if they use a diazo emulsion. I will let you know when I get my hands on the results.

It was a good time. I sure couldn't complain about that weather as I left my house today to return to work the thermometer read -18.... :o

Good time B.S.ing with everyone and putting faces to names! Not sure if you guys do it, but I kinda have "pictures" of what everyone looks like in my head if I haven't seen or met them. Ya, turns out they are NOTHING like reality. The farthest one off I think was Parker1- that late 50's skinny balding guy I made up turns out to be a solid 30's guy with a beard! ;D Binkspot Brian turned out to be quite different than I had pictured also, and quite the ball buster!
Have to say my High/Low point was being at the corner of the table with Greg Kitson, Pierre(Bluemoon) and Mark Coudray. To put it nicely, the conversation was intense! Oh, ya then throw in Socalfmf and jsheridan, lets just say I felt like I had been running the "class store" back in 2nd grade selling pencils!!! ;D It is one thing to have a smooth running shop but when all those guys started talking, I started questioning if I should start selling my equipment out individually or the "business" as a whole! I have a LOT of work to do before I can consider us smooth running after hearing a lot of the conversations!

Seriously though it was a great time, found myself saying a few times "stop me if I am talking about printing too much" only to realize I was surrounded by people talking the same thing!

Great time! Mr. Hoffman, thank you for the dinner!

Alex,

Loved having you join the conversation, remember you're just where every other printer was at some time in their career.

The comment about accountability is one that every business owner must remember, without someone pushing many of us just get lazy and lose our edge.  Keeping up with the new guys and how they think is just one of the things that keeps me accountable.  Thanks for the nudge to keep on learning/sharing.

See you at a show!

Not agitation towards you but towards- never mind I have already begun to get riled up just thinking about it!!! Brian you are good stuff, so is everyone else I met!

I've only missed one Ft Worth show in the last 6 years.  It's small, but I enjoy it.  There was a DB, Sportsman, Falcon, Sroque, Freedom, Javelin Electraprint, and a Titan at the last show which isn't a bad turnout for a small show.  There wasn't as much CTS equipment as I wanted with only the M&R unit and the Acti Camera Legend being there.  DTG machines were there but I walked right by them.  I wish a CH 3 would have been there and an MHM of any kind, a full sized Anatol, but I guess it could have been worse.  Last years show was geared towards the entry level autos.  I remember there being an MHM E-type the first show I went to and then a Gauntlet Z a few years back.  2 years ago they had the CH 3D former world record machine at the same show there was a 12/14 CH 3.

At this years DFW Impressions show we will be bringing the "Yellow Room". It was not previously scheduled but with the response we are having with it we added it to 4 more shows in 2014.

TAS was not at Fort Worth? They were not at Long Beach this year, and I want to say that is the first time I do not remember them there.

M&R had a bunch of autos, don't even really remember how many, maybe 4 or 5 but the big one was just a CHIII not a CHIIID from my deciphering. Keep in mind I am not super well versed in M&R speak :D but I thought the IIID had digital controls/readout at the end of the heads.
MHM only had a small 6 color X-Type I belive, I don't think it was a S-Type.

Alpha 8 really? I usually try to look out for oval machines. Rich went over the dryer with me and I have to say that is a pretty sweet machine! Standard options the other guys don't even offer as options!

I had to block my badge like you did so they would not scan it.....lol

That's one reason I usually use a fake name, you know , like Lou Stules. They act like they know you and call you Lou. And when they call the shop trying to reach you...the PA page raises eyebrows too

Lou Stules, gotta remember that one, pretty funny.

'just got back to work this afternoon. 'was home sick with a bad case of flu (as in hallucinating a being delirious for two days, not fun at all!).

As always, great seeing everybody! 'had a great time and will try hard to do it again next year. 'had a pleasure of rooming with Alex (TCT), what a great guy.
It was nice meeting some ppl for the first time Andy included (yes, we've been partners for years without meeting face to face!).

Many thanx to Richard for sponsoring the dinner.

On a side note, we have reached an agreement with Hanes to be a major sponsor for the web site, so we'll be seeing some of their advertising, giveaways and product support.

Probably caught it from that Lou Stules guy.

This is great news! I guess I'm kind of surprised that they even noticed little old us. But involvement from any of the major (and minor) players
is always a good thing.

I'm going to join this group, I got up on Monday morning and only made it to about 10 AM and went home and slept 20 hours straight.

Thought is was just jet lag and what my wife calls 'getting old'.

Wonder now if maybe it had something to do with dinner on Friday night.....Food issues usually happen within a few hours but this took a few days to develop, my guess is somebody brought a flu bug to the show with them.

Any body else....?

Um, after that statement you may still be delirious..... ;D

I have been going to Long Beach for 4 years now, and once when it was in Chicago(Schaumburg) and never had nearly as good as a time I had this year! It was GREAT to have a TSB meet up! Like a group of high school buddies meeting up after years, except I didn't know anyones names or faces, just their screen names. Otherwise guys like me just wonder aimlessly alone dodging scanners and catalogues from which ever NEW company is out of China this year.

If it's what I had a few weeks ago, get to the doctor now. I went after a week and a half. I thought I had it beat, but it held on. There is a lot of crap out there they don't even know how to treat this year. Hope y'all feel better soon. Except Sam. You can suffer.

For what it's worth on the flu (or whatever) front, Mrs. Frog and I both had shots and both still got a bug around Christmas that had us coughing for about 18 days.
Be glad that you have a different bug.

Havent even had time to check when it is... I spend my time on some damn forum! ;)

But seriously, I came back to find one printer up and moved to Las Vegas Monday before I got back! Another guy told me Tuesday he needed 5 weeks leave for school. I swear it seems like employees are out to get me! Now I am thinking I may be the problem....

Well its been a week since LB ISS 2014 and I'm still doing follow up e-mails.

How about a report from Megan and Pierre on their first ISS seminar preesentation experience?

I've been doing seminars long enough to know that I don't know any more about the business of decorated apparel than many in my presentations I just have a big mouth and don't mind talking in front of a crowd.

Megan & Pierre, can you share your thoughts on how it went for the rest of the board since you were brave enough to give it a shot. :D

Thanks in advance,

~Kitson

right there with you Greg! I keep telling ppl I just like to share my OPINIONS!

The class was easier and better than I expected, but not as good as it could have been. THere was too much material, so I felt rushed and did not quite deliver at 100% (not enough images, sections were slightly too long without a change of pace and should have involved the participants more). I do believe I drove the point of having a plan and the importance of sales/marketing home though.

Thanx for your support before the class! Also a big thank you to all the TSB members that made it easier to present instead of having a crowd of unfamiliar faces staring back.

Your class was good! I GUARANTEE for some people it was like you were speaking directly to us. There are some that "wing it"(nothing against that, just realizing not something I can do anymore) that it probably didn't hit as close to home with, but those people were all looking for the secret on how to make it big and best marketing strategy that has a 85% return.... While we all know those secrets ourselves and marketing results like that are the norm ::)  ::) ::) (can you read the sarcasm there now?) I don't think you could of made EVERYONE happy. I think the people that were there for the right reasons got a lot out of it. Personally I still wonder why the hell you chose screen printing for a gig! ;D  Even the people that were looking for the golden secret probably picked up useful information, they just don't know it yet. In 3 years if they are still printing that spreadsheet will be gold to them. Personally I would of just paid you for the spreadsheet deal....

Think ISS would want to talk to me about a class called "just wing it"?.... ;D ;D

My experience was surprising!  I didn't think anyone would show up!  With it being the first time that ISS has done anything like my seminar it was hard for me to gage what to say and the "spirit" of how to said it.  I had a nice group of ladies that were very attentive.   But just like Pierre I feel that mine could have gone better.  After getting the feed back, I know what I would have done differently.  But all and all it was so much damn fun to chat with other business owners and hear what they had to say.
