Title: Beds?
Post by: Prosperi-Tees on April 29, 2014, 04:43:04 PM
Please do not link to asdf mattress site plz.

My wife and I have been suffering lately with severe lower back pain and we have attributed it to our bed after spending a couple nights out of town in a firmer bed and not being as sore as when we sleep in our bed. I absolutely hate shopping for mattresses but after reading some reviews it looks like the Sleep Number bed or the Memory Foam mattresses are the ticket. Any of us here have one or want to share some experiences?

We've had a Sleep Number bed for a while now, maybe six or seven years
Ours is a model with single, 2 channel wireless remote, and that particular device has been a weak spot.
We have replaced it twice, once on warranty, and once using a "product or accessory reward" for a referral.

Other than that, yes, it solves my wife's back issues. She also tried the memory foam, but found it a little claustrophobic, or at least really limiting movement because of the indentation one makes in it.

I built a platform for out bed. I got tired of hearing the box springs. Just tossing the box springs and using the mattress on top of a solid wood frame makes a big difference. No noise and the mattress is firmer and you don't sink into it as much.

Thinking about a sleep number too! I hear that some Raddison hotel locations have them, I think one in Orlando has them. Would be nice to have a weekend on one before going through the hulabaloo of buying one, just in case, but they seem to have a better approval rating than the temperpedics.

I slept on a mattress on the floor for years, slept great, went to a waterbed, got rid of that a year later, platforms since, but I can sleep on anything. My business partner bought the foam a number of years ago, didn't care for it much. A couple of friends have liked the Sleep Number units very much.

I have chronic back pain, both from a pretty bad car accident in college (not my fault btw), and because of the manual printing.  When we got a tempurpedic it was life changing.  I still have pain, but it isnt "wake up every day in pain immediately until you take a shower and pop pain meds".

I have slept on a sleep number mattress a bunch of times while traveling during my former job, and it is basically a high tech air mattress.  I didn't like it nearly as much as the foam, but to each their own.

The thing that worries me about the foam is heat retention. Im "hot blooded" and can't sleep when it's to warm. How is the foam with heat retention?

Tempurpedic is helpful, but i've found working with the right shoes and insoles helps quite a good deal as well. Also it helps that my mother-in-law is a message therapist, specializing in SET therapy.

The heat thing either isnt an issue with ours or I am not affected by it.  My brother in law bought one that was topped with some kind of cooling layer made out of who knows what.

I wear crocs every day all day when printing.  I tried insoles and a bunch of random restaurant shoes or whatever, then my aunt, who is a nurse, suggested crocs.  Clean them in the washout booth like anything else, and my feet have never felt better.  I sprang for the nicer version that was still all foam rubber for easy cleaning.

FWIW and not mattress related, but a good bit of chronic lower back pain is caused by tight hamstrings.  A daily stretch routine can do wonders for chronic pain.

I wear Crocs almost everyday.  They have work crocs, Rx crocs.  I have about 5 different pair and change them around. I'd have more but they only sell 15's in a few styles. Once every week or 2 I may wear tennis shoes. I get people asking me why I wear crocs to work.  I simply ask them why do you wear tennis shoes while not playing tennis!!!!

I have wanted to get a sleep number bed but I hate spending that kind of money that isn't going to be made back.

I was told sit-ups helps the lower back because the abs will help support the body.
So may be 1 minute of easy situps might help.

tennis shoes are way different than sneakers.  Tennis shoes are closer to basketball shoes, just minus the high tops.  They have a tone of support for lateral movement like stopping and starting to run for a ball.

sneakers make for terrible tennis shoes.

why do you wear crocs if you are older than 5? ;)

That being said, if they help your back, they are worth it.  I think too much is placed on a bed when the problem is elsewhere.  Beds are a huge help, but seeing a physical therapist or even a trainer can really help.

We have a Sleep To Live mattress and while VERY expensive I sleep so much better now.  You can pick its firmness while you are buying it, but its not adjustable.  Shellys side has what she likes, mine has what I like.  We sleep better in shorter periods of time.

Frog was accurate about the remote air pump.  When we had our bed we went through several of them.  I had the best sleep on the mattress, but I'm a side sleeper.  Through the nite I go side to side.  I found when trying to roll over I had to spin in place.  The divider on our queen mattress would suck you into a hole in the center of the bed and end up waking me up if I tried to roll over.  You also had to wake up enough to spin in place.  We ended up going back to the traditional mattress.  A king size mattress might have solved the problem, but we didn't have room.

We have a memory foam and it's pretty nice but like many others I've had my eye on the Sleep Number beds.

When it comes to back pain it could be as simple as getting a new mattress but I've found that it's more related to the shoes the majority of the time.  I've been working on concrete floors my whole adult life and have had back and knee pain for the last 6 years.  I used to walk on average 7-8 miles per day while working at Sams and if you didn't have a comfortable pair of shoes you were worthless after a tough day.  I tried wearing boots for a few weeks and that was a disaster, I've tried insoles, a dozen brands of running/walking shoes, crocs, you name it.  I currently use the Reebok Zigs or Nike Air Max 360's and if I'm not going to be in production all day I'll wear Red Wing boots.  Try the mattress but don't forget the shoes.

^^Agree 100%.

I was just thinking about how I really need a new pair of work shoes.
Staying till nine last Friday made me sore enough to pretty much ruin the weekend for me.

I had to print all last week and by Friday my back was in full spasm mode.  I wore my boots on Friday because my printer was supposed to be back then but he wasn't so 9 hours on the concrete floor without my comfy shoes.   We took my son to the Monster Truck Jam in Austin on Saturday and I could hardly walk.  I had more than one offer to seat us in the handicapped section of the arena but our seats were a little better.  It is embarrassing having to walk like that and everybody looking at me wondering what the hell was wrong with me.

We were looking at a sleep number like everyone else! My wife said she wanted to try something else before we dropped $2K or whatever it is on a sleep number. Here is what she got-

She ended up getting something crazy like 83% off with all her coupons and shopping gold stars. The thing is actually really nice, especially for a big boned guy like myself. I can only imagine what it feels like for my wife, son and dogs :P

Only negative I really have about it is, it does not "breathe" very well. I am ALWAYS hot, so sometimes it will just trap heat between my body and the bed....

That's my problem as well, always hot, can't stand it. And dropping that kind of money is tough when you have other obligations as well but I can't stand to print for more than 45 minutes at a clip right now.

You are always hot and live in CA.... I got your remedy, move up here to MN, it may level you out! ;D  Now imagine me, living in MN and always being hot... I don't care what time of year it is if I ever travel to CA long pants, long sleeves, hoodies, jackets, they all stay home! ;D

Ever thought of getting those Dr. Sholls inserts for your shoes? The kind you stand on a machine at CVS or where ever and they "map" your foot. I got a pair($45 or so) and they make a WORLD of difference when working on my feet.

I live in the valley of California so right now it's 95 degrees this week and in the coming months 105-110 as our highs. So in the shop probably 120! Don't know why I chose this profession to be honest lol.
I would love to move to a cooler climate but not MN extreme lol.
I seen that foot machine thing, im gonna have to try it out.

A couple years ago another press guys recommended some industrial floor mats. I've tried a bunch of different kinds over the years but the ones he recommended are the real deal. I couldn't imagine standing at the press without them anymore.

Pssh, yeah.  Move to MN, drop your highs to 90-100, lower your lows well below zero, and up your humidity to 60-90%.

Oh yeah, almost forgot.  Mosquitoes.

(I actually really like MN, I'm just giving you crap.  ;) )

Same here, and no way the wife would deal with that.

We also used to have a memory foam topper.(Got rid of it, was tired of waking up soaking wet for sweating)
We bought a new bed last fall(momory foam is ALL you can get these days) but the way it is built it breathes. Have not had a problem being hot.
This is the one we got

Finally Sweets brings to the table what everyone really wants to know.. the real question. How is the ride to pound town

We're a Seally pillow top kinda family and after 2 kids, sick nights, chocolate milk utttohhhhhs! and general 10 years of 'use' its time to get a new one. F that sleepnumber stuff.. worst sleep i ever had and whoever mentioned falling into the hole in the middle.. hated that!

I'm building a frame in the next couple weeks and dumping the box spring and getting a new 15" pillow top to put on the frame. Mattress shopping is like car shopping as the listed prices can have as much as 500% markup. Just like a car, you have to get out there and test drive em and each dealer has a different brand that kind of feels like the last but isn't even close.

Look for manufacture tags as they will tell you about general construction. Manufacturers make the same bed for different brands and call them different names, all they do is change the cover but the tag is federally compliant so read it.

Start with the firm sets and finish with the soft. Find the one that gives you the best support, give yourself 10 minutes lying in your 'go to sleep' position and be sure to bring any special pillows and comfortable clothes.
If you feel pressured in any way, offered today only deals, are handed off to another person to finish the paperwork, hand them a card with your number and walk out immediately. They will call you and offer a good deal as mattress stores are run by managers who can give discounts, furniture stores are not. When they call you, the advantage is in your favor to get even more off. Ask for as much off or add ons as you can get.. in simple. Be that azzhole customer who calls us all the time wanting the world for free. Just like the car, you only buy one every 6-10 years so get a deal!!

I usually hit our guy up for 2nds because I'm a cheap ass

ouch.. 200 bucks for a 3x5.. Uline has some WICKED mats for fractions of the cost.

These are my favorite, have 12 of them around the shop. (http://www.uline.com/Product/Detail/H-2008B~Y/Mats/3-x-5-Hog-Heaven-Nitrile-Mat-Black-Yellow-5-8-thick?model=H-2008B/Y&RootChecked=yes)
