Title: Bracket to pallet double sided tape replacement? Action Engineering
Post by: IntegrityShirts on June 11, 2014, 08:29:56 AM
I've had these 16x22 pallets for about 3 years now and the adhesive tape strip that holds the pallet to the bracket on some pallets is loosening or not in contact with each side in places.  Now I understand heat cycling and I do use zoned flashing a bit and the outer end of the pallet heats up more than the inside, but seems the tape should last longer than this? Anyone else have issues? I print probably 1/8th of what you full timers print so it makes me think maybe I got a bad batch? One pallet in particular has arched up in the middle enough to make it noticeably higher on table up that it will tap the floodbar and you can see daylight between the bracket and pallet when looking underneath. That's the only one that actually seems warped, the others are just not firm, you can forcibly wiggle them on their adhesive if you grab the sides of the pallet and twist a little.  Still holds registration fine but I want to take care of it sooner rather than have a pallet fling off the press.

I guess if I were to redo these myself, where do you guys buy your 3m strips/rolls from? I may as well do all 12 pallets and then relevel each one.

Have you talked to Action? In fact, I'm a little surprised at not seeing Erik jumping in here already.

Not me. Action has a custom built hydraulic press that uses insane pressure to adhere the boards to the brackets. I believe he stole the hydro power pack from an old Precision Oval!

Erik is quite pride of their innovative engineering, I love the 'tape sticker downer' tooling they have innovated.  "So Simple, So Effective" like all good engineering should be.

That tool was just one of the great things they have available in their Atlanta area facility that makes life easier for us squeegee pushers!

And it, along with the proper tape should make a bond that, under normal conditions,  lasts how long?

Look like about 3 years from  IntegrityShirts experience.

That's what I'm wondering. I haven't seen any other posts of similar breakdown. I'd love to get Action Erik's input on this.

Fwiw, I think M&R sells that crazy pallet-to-bracket 3M tape.

Not that you should ever really need to replace it.

Just get the tape from m and r its the cheapest and easiest way to go.

I've never seen this happen on m and r built platens.  In fact when we replaced our short brackets on the 1992 gautlet that we have it was hard to get those off. If the correct tape is used and the surfaces are prepared correctly it's pretty unlikely this would happen but it could happen,.... obviously you know that because it happened to you.

We had to re tape all of them on our red colored press in roughly a year's time but they did not use the correct tape, did not apply it correctly, and did not use enough of it.

Here's a picture of it. I'm going to order som M&R tape, detach the bracket then hop up and down on the pallet supported on the top and bottom to try and get the bow out of it. Then reattach the bracket.

Hello:

I'm back from my vacation. I agree that these pallets should be in better shape than this.
If all 12 are showing an issue than we need to replace or correct them.
Please call me at 770-717-1000.

Talked with Erik and I'm going to send him the pallets during my vacation for him to fix up. They know what they're doing and have the right tools to flatten these back out. Thanks Action!

Happened to us 2 yrs ago.  Ordered replacement pallets from Anatol did not last a week.  I had them put screws with tape and have not had any more issues.

For Anatol owners, if anyone has this issue with the Anatol platens, don't send them back, as Parker1 pointed out they will simply do it incorrectly again.  The bracket should not need screws to hold fast for many years.  Instead, ask them to send the VBR tape to you and do it yourself.  We did this and ours are holding together now because we did it right, using the appropriate amount of tape and pressure.  Wasted hours of payroll on this needless exercise but hey, at least we didn't have to pay for the tape.

The M&R tape is really the way to go however, it's more suitable VBR and in a nice, sized to fit, single sheet.  For the low price they charge for these strips it might be worth it just to buy them there.

UPDATE. Shipped five pallets back to Action last week right before I went on vacation. Came back to some boxes waiting for me. New bracket tape and possibly some de-warping on one. They look great and Action really stepped it up on service for them even though there isn't a written warranty.  Thanks again!!
