Title: bought a macbook pro 2 days ago...
Post by: whitewater on August 18, 2011, 02:33:03 PM
I use an imac at the shop but have been getting slammed so I thought I could do some artwork from home after i put the kiddies to bed. I have cs2 illy and Photo..

Come to find out you CANNOT use any of these older programs with Lion.

I should have done my homework, but I have been using macs for the last 7 years so I really didn't think I had to research..

So now whatever I have on my Imac DOES NOT translate to my new macbook pro.

WTF?!? what a huff elfin waste of $1400..well not a waste if I want to buy all those elfin programs again..

I hate shiit like this!

You can upgrade Adobe products from three versions ago.

Sign up for a photography class at our local junior college, and buy the educational version..then cancel the class. :)

But the agreement with educational versions often forbids commercial use.
I know, I'm naive.

buy the upgrades, par for the course right? But you may have to go to CS5... (I can't find an upgrade to CS4 to save my life...)

I have to upgrade too. I use CS3 and it works fine... (just got a new Mac two weeks ago and it did not have Lion, but I can get it free.)

I'm using the trial of ai CS5 and it rocks. It has a lot of new stuff I can really use. Adjustable line withs, a cool perspective grid (like Freehand had) and a MUCH better gradient tool.

My problem is that I thought I was going to be some kind of a web designer years ago and got a suite. Well, that web thing never happened and I still mainly use just AI and PSD for illustration.

But noooo, I can't just upgrade those two... I have to upgrade the whole suite.

Anyway, if you wait too long to upgrade, it can cost more too.

You can upgrade Adobe products from three versions ago.

does the upgrade include not making it a powerpc product...?

thats what it is...they took out rosetta ...so if the upgrade puts rosetta back in then it will work.

I don't think CS5 comes in a PowerPC version. Most software is now geared towards the Intel Macs. I gave my G5 to my kid after I started using Carbonite for backup last year.

Snow Leopard is getting hard to come by. I got a copy from Best Buy and they'd taken it off the shelves. Had to ask the cashier to round one up. He said they're all to be shipped back to Apple.

That said, I'm getting ready to upgrade to Lion.

My mom just got a new Mini last week and it came with Lion. So I had a chance to check it out....
Looks like most of my apps are either Intel or universal..

You can get a list of exactly what apps will not work.... any that are classic or power PC...
From the apple in the upper right, select about this mac/ Then click the More info button.
in the  systems profiler that comes up select Applications on the lest.... you will get a list of every app including those that run in the background...
The far right column should be kind.... this will tell you if it will run with out rosetta!

I have an original copy from the day it was released..... Paypal me 20 bucks and I'll ship it to you!

You'll need to download all the free upgrades, but everything will run for you.(http://www.tshirtillustrator.com/images/snowl.jpg)

hmm... the easiest thing to do may be hopping on craigslist and buying an older used mac mini and use that at home.

That's crazy... Why buy an old used mac when he has a brand new fast one with a warranty and hardware like thunderbolt, Built in W-fi & Bluetooth., .... he just needs the older OS so as not to buy all new software....
20 bucks on craigslist....

I think some of the new stuff on new Macs will not work with the old OS. My boos tried to install 10.4 on the new Macs we got few months ago and it would not allow him to install older OS on new Mac.
I know that some RIP software on the Imaging dept at printing Co. where I work will not run on Snow Leopard and the new Mac will not take the older OS (10.4). Also, that lady could not hook up the old video card because it was not compatible with the new OS, there was some issues with the hook up of the second monitor. On mine, everything works fine :)
And yes, you can not install anything older that CS3 on new Lion OS.

the distinction is whether they are an (CHIRP) Intel chip based Mac or a( RISC) AIM based chip ( Apple-IBM-Motorola) called Power PC or PPC processors.
10.4 is tiger and will not run on a Intel.!!! 10.5 is leopard and will run on both ( Badly I might add), 10.6 is Snow leopard and will only run on a Intel but with rosetta will run older PPC software...

many programs are intel or ppc only.. most are universal and will run on both.

typical growing pains...
