Title: If you were given that chance to start a different business what would it be ?
Post by: earthdome on August 19, 2011, 11:51:16 PM
Just curious the thought of screen printers in the industry.... If you could start over would you chose screen printing again and , if so or not Why ?

And if you were given the chance to run another kind of business what would it be and WHY ?

Thanks for any replies.....

Earth worm farmer. It would ve a slow process rounding them up on horseback, but probably very fun.

People joke about this (like me) but you have to look at it from the outside looking in. First thing that comes to mind, is "that could be anything".

I will say though, I think Scott would make a fine Pimp.

I think you can start all over again in a new business and would find many of the same issues. I think the real thing to confided is, " are you really putting in enough into this business that you are in now.

Very cosmically strange that this would pop up just one day later, but yesterday I added a little actual factual personal connection to the long running (if not accurate) "inventor of the internet" joke, and the man I  referenced, Jon Postel's brother Russ, last I heard was raising and selling earthworms.

seriously though this tee shirt thing is pretty nice overall especially if I can learn more than spot printing. The $ are pretty good the work is pretty easy and the turn is pretty quick. maybe I would feel differently about if I were printing 1000 pieces a week but for this dropout wanna-be this is a pretty good gig most days.

Lol, nice one Homer .... Honestly you seriously had me thinking last night when you said pizza shop. Found a Pizza business in a high traffic area (supposedly 9,000 cars go  by a day) It was a very successful pizza place for the last 12 years... and all they want is $595 a month !! it's in a rich neighborhood around a lot of businesses... but again it's unfortunately about an hour from my house....

Just trying to see what opinions were of people in the business.... thanks for the "non joking" responses people ... my plans for the print shop are still a Go, but I can't help wondering what might be more "turn key" that I could start making money with (perhaps quicker than this industry) however I do feel it has a higher potential for making more money in the long run and room for expansion and growth.

Hope everyone's having a great weekend !

My brothers wife's parents run a pizza/Italian place.. it's an hour from their "estate" in the hills.. they work 12 hrs a day 6 days a week and BANK!!

  595 a month is a bargain!!

Hell yeah, I would have jumped on it !! Despite having to travel an hour! But just my luck.. There voice mail says they are out until the 25th !! If it's still there i'm going to jump at it.. They have so much marketing already done, and in a perfect location, not to mention all ready to be just set up and ran !  Not sure if i'd be able to keep  the business name, but not sure i'd want to .

I am really starting to entertain the idea of getting into a business that someone left due to whatever reason , or something that perhaps needs  an overhaul... I hope I see more opportunities like this..

My same career goal as well. I have been calling ever local successful business in my area and offering them $1000 cold hard cash to sell me the business. However, I would require to see the books to be sure this business is making money hand over fist and the owner just got bored counting all their cash. There are some very lucrative businesses on the other side of my city, but with gas prices the way they are today I think I will stay to my own block thank you very much.

Hey, Wal-Mart pays better than most other retailers.  I was making over $1 an hour more than my friends working at a grocery store.  They got raises when minimum wage went up.

I am not saying that they are great and wonderful, but if they weren't there, Target would be the one everybody was slamming...or Kmart, or whomever.

The Walmart by us threatened to close up shop if they couldn't expand...since right down the road they built a brand new Publix and Kroger and Target.  Their store was run down and needed to renovate, but since it was Walmart, everybody pitched a fit.  Nevermind that the other stores cleared more land to build...Walmart wasn't allowed to use their existing land to compete.

I think the hatred of walmart is overblown, and if I was them, I would fight unions tooth and nail too.  I'd fire my own family if they threatened to unionize a company I owned.  It is the fastest and surest way to wreck a company. Cough(gm, chrysler)cough

I totally agree that bring jobs to communitys but there are some communities that they totally destroy the small business. It would be like if there were a huge worldwide screen printing chain that moved into your town and say there were only a couple mom and pop screen printing shops, what do you think would happen?

Hey, Home Depot destroyed the mom and pop hardware stores, Sports Authority and then Dicks destroyed the small sporting goods retailers.  Bass Pro destroyed smaller fishing gear and boat retailers.

And I think the internet has done more damage than Walmart ever could.  Instead of even shopping at a local place that employs local people, we can buy it from another state, avoid sales tax, get the best price and NONE of that money stays in the community.

The one thing that the internet seems to have ruined is motorcycle swap meets. They still have 'em but nothing like they used to. During Bike Week they used to have a good one at the Volusia County Fairgrounds with three buildings and a parking lot full of new and used stuff. It was always my first stop. The ones that are left have only a handful of graybeards with a few milk crates of junk. Maybe with so many people selling new on eBay and internet stores, the used market petered out. That, and the obscene fees the county charges for a temp license to sell. Have a buddy who signed up for a spot when the company running the meet sprung on him the need for a county license on top of the cost of the spot. He declined. Too damn much. Gubmint will squeeze the profit right out of the little guy every chance they get, then wonder why they have a deficit.

Same thing happened with the 500 mile or whatever yard sale.  Everybody could look up the value of items and wouldn't let things go for yard sale value and wanted to get retail.

I worked at Sam's Club for almost 7 years right out of high school, through college and then a few years after, and I can say I learned a lot on how and how not to run a business, and especially how to deal with customers and employees.  I worked under dozens of different managers and I soaked up everything I could about the business and especially the employee/employer relationship.  I can't say I have any real negative things to say about the company, but I do know a lot about why they have done things the way they do, even though I did disagree with many company decisions and directions we had over the years.

Wal mart in the mid to late 90s here in California was actually a great place to work because we got all these managers from the midwest and southern regions to start up the stores here and they knew how to run a store and to have good relations with employees but after they started promoting California people into management and I hate to say it because I am a California guy the place downhill.
