Are there any plans available for something like? Or anything that i should try and do while building one?
-
I have one. We call it the semi-automatic screen coater. Uses stainless l-bar and some knobs and uses a hydraulic cylinder from a hatchback found at auto supply store. It is awesome. I can't stand to see the "one hand on the screen the other on the coater" technique. Makes me nuts. Camera charging but I think Dave has seen it.

I just have 2 pieces of 3/4" x 3/4" wood screwed into a table and use that to lean the screens up against the wall in the screen room... has worked fine for the 4+ years that I've been using it.
never got used to doing a one-handed coat either.

For those who require higher tolerance and consistency with the two handed method consider this: Picture an artists easel with aluminium construction. The top is wall mounted with a piece of aluminium angle iron that grips the top of the screen. The bottom has the same piece to catch the bottom of the screen. Attached to this piece is a hydraulic shock from an auto supply store. This holds the screen firmly in place and accommodates different frame sizes. Downward motion applied to the screen releases it. A quick flip and you now coat the other side.
These have been made. Some even have a swivel so you don't even have to release the screen to coat the other side.

similar to this, 2x4 on the table with stops (screws) on the side and a block on the wall for the screen to rest against. . .

Vastex just came out with a new one like a week ago. I haven't seen it in person yet though. Looks pretty nice.

We have a Saati one. It's nice, adjustable, I'll try and get a pic later. Not much to it in terms of fabrication.

Just build yours, do not buy it :)

Thanks Orion there it is. Hydraulic shock is mounted to bottom screen holder. Do not need to adjust for screen frame sizes. Just height of person coating.
-
Here's ours... I personally don't like the ones that only hold the screen at the bottom.. too much flex in the screen and you don't get a consistent coating.

please no comments on the emulsion drips all over the place... we've gotten a LOT cleaner than we were when we started... :)

I'll post mine soon, it uses a spring loaded bottom with a top stop. Fits anything from 20x24 to 48x56, wall mounted.
edit: It's kind of similar to the Vastex unit, or maybe like a hybrid of the vastex one and the one tony linked.

wow thanks all! I need to build one next week!
I thought i had this one handed screen coating method mastered....but i'm very quickly finding out that it's all just make believe!
-
just a couple pieces of 2x4 I had laying around
-
All good. I prefer the shock version on mine or the Vastex spring load but anything that gets you to two handed coating is better. Especially for those concerned with EOM

What does one of these cost? I am actually going to be enclosing our "dark room" and want to get more efficient in there and not break my back coating.

I had one made similar to Tony's (years ago) but was spring loaded on the bottom. Angle iron on top and bottom to hold
Auto coater now ::)

$299.00 for the wall mount version, add $125.00 for the stand if you want it.

Does that flip and rotate?
-
Backlight it and you've got a place to inspect and tape screens as well.
-
Does that flip and rotate?
You have to flip the screen manually.
-
Binky, get on it! I see it in my head should be pretty simple for a guy like you to make tow pivot points, each with a locking pin. The way I see it, once the screen is locked in, it should stay locked in until you're done coating.

Combine it with backlighting and an FPU and we are in business!

Yeah, Brian and foot pedal activated... Fits in tight spaces (that was redundant for me to say a that huh?) I'll buy one! ;)

Your gowing to laugh but Tony posted a picture of one a while back, then seen Saati's. I half assed built one with a spring loaded clamp you would release with your foot. Had idea for an auto clam one with an air cylinder. Then I found coating with one hand and a 5 gallon bucket was a whole lot faster and easier. It has since been taken apart and used for other "gadgets".
-
If you have time, make one, but-
coating with one hand and a 5 gallon bucket was a whole lot faster and easier.
Can be very consistent this way, otherwise larger than a normal auto screen I would say needs stabilization.
-
25x36 are my limit, the few larger ones we have I lean against the wall.
