Right now I've got a Springfield Armory XD 40, couple random shotguns, all 20 ga dove hunting guns, and a 1940 something 38 revolver and an even older 22 range pistol. Right now the only one I shoot regularly is the XD 40 because the older pistols aren't near as much fun.
Real men shoot 1911's. ;D :P

Here's a link to one of my client's (and neighbor's) enterprise that may interest you gun guys. He's a 1911 guy.

Trust me Chris, a 1911 is on the list for future purchase. I'm working my way up to that level. I've got a weird doucher infatuation with the Desert Eagle that I've been trying to fight so wish me luck with that.

Desert Eagles are awesome. I've shot a buddies a couple times. I'm the same with tactical ar-15's right now...
Here's my 1911. Bout the only stock thing on it is the frame.

Only when dove hunting with #8 shot. It doesn't hurt to bad. ;D

again, you have to try one of the SVI's to believe it.
mine is a 45 cal, and it holds 12 rounds in the clip. That is a lot of firepower (no, the 45 does not compare to DE's 50 cal), but the accuracy, fit and finish are incredible. Until I shot one of these I did not think that the gun makes a lot of difference. With my S&W I could barely hit the target (I am a revolver guy). Then I shot one of these and 10 out of 12 were in the bullseye. Had to have it! Spent some time looking around and found a used one about a month later.

Here's what I am saving for at the moment, but I will add a suppressor when I get it. Should be able to put the smack down on some hogs at night.

Awesome thread. Those are some nice pieces Chris and Pierre, I'd love to move into something like that. I'm thinking of selling one of my shotguns that's worth about 1500 and buying a really nice 1911, but I just can't narrow it down. There are so many badass pistols out there and deciding which one I want is next to impossible.
Chris, who makes that rifle? We do some things for Larue Tactical and they have some really nice guns and accessories. I've been out to their facilities to deliver before and it's unbelievable.

It just sound weird when you say that you found an "used" gun :)
Hopefully it has a clear history
Not really a gun person, but I'm pondering the idea of getting one down the road. "For under the pillow"

A Mossberg 930 autoloading shotgun, and a Ruger P95 9mm I bought for some cheap defense at my old commercial location. It was too hot to work with the rollup door closed, and too many cars doing a slow roll through the dark parking lot in the evening. No back door to hightail it out of in the event of after-hours "bargain hunters".

I'm a newbie in the gun world. Just got my first one and still trying to become a good shot. Just a little Beretta 9mm. I think it's good for starters. I really wanted to learn for protecting my family and property first. Maybe I can get something better down the road.

If I was buying a 1911 right now it would a Wilson Combat, Colt, or a custom Kimber..springfield is excellent as well....But there are an enormous amount of people making 1911's. WIlson combat mags are the only thing I put through that Colt of mine.
The rifle is WIlson Combat as well. I would buy either the W.C., LaRue, or Noveske for AR15. As far as accessories, well you're doing business with the premiere accessories man in the US. Very few manuf. come close to LaRue, and IMHO, none are better. Sounds like some trade-outs are in order.
Good thing about the AR15's and 1911's is you can customize them as you go. So you can buy something like a bushmaster or equivalent AR and then start adding Larue or Noveske parts as you need them. Same thing with the 1911. Mine says Colt on the outside, but on the inside is almost entirely Wilson.

Not sure what model you got but Beretta is a great gun....it's the sidearm of the US Military. At least for now, I hear they are changing make and caliber soon. But alot of Taliban and al Qaida have been killed with a Beretta 9.

I have, but do not remember much. I have served in two different militaries and have plenty of experience with guns. The SVI (and the similar STI) are in a class of their own. Some of the more expensive H&K's and Sigs were close, but still not there. I have compared it to the Wilsons and Kimbers, even the tuned versions had 3-4 time more play than this gun. It all comes at a price though, last time I checked the used ones were about $2k. All my other guns combined do not add to the price of this one.

I'm with Dave, I just got into this little hobby about a year ago and I'm working my way up. The gun hobby will definitely cut into my watch collecting, but I'm ok with it.
I'd love to start doing some trade with Larue, but accounting wouldn't be too happy!

I carry (well kind of not real happy that the ONLY state in the Union, Ill. does NOT have a conceal and carry law) inside the business, a little Taurus 380. I've had it for years and really like it. Home, The Judge. Neat little gun.
Interesting story, when I moved to a new location, the old place was broken into 6 times in 2 months, the local polce paid us a visit. They asked what we do for security, I showed him all the cameras, inside, and he asked non outside. Nope. That's so I can prove I shot them in the building. He asked to see my gun. I un-loaded it and handed it to him. He said good idea. Look at this. Un-holstered his Kimber, un-loaded it and handed it to me. Nice gun.
-
My dad was going to buy The Judge a few weeks ago but he hasn't done it yet.
-
... don't know squat about guns, but have a 1911 Ithaca that I inherited from my father. He bought it for about $12 from the government (as an NRA member in the 60's).
It's got the rough green military finish... not much to look at, but it would do the job in a pinch.

I’m not a big collector, but I do carry a Glock 9... Yes a Glock :P
For the price, and based on the reviews I read at the time, seemed like a great gun for the money. I have put at least 1k down the range without a jam, and it’s very accurate, plus 13 rounds in a pinch I’m gonna hit ya ;D.... I would like a larger caliber H&K, Kimber, or Sig for my next one, but since I already have one, hard to justify the funds right now :(
You may proceed to make fun of me now ;)
-
I have too many - some never fired and some pretty rough. A Type 38 Arisaka from Iwo Jima (my dad was there on LST-587) is my historical favorite with a Colt 1860 Army a close second. Lately I've been taking a Win model '12 12ga to the trap range - got a matching 16ga that's more fun to shoot and much easier on the old shoulder but shells are so much more expensive. Usually wind up shooting the 12ga from the very back of the arc. Colt Woodsman MT to the pistol range. Got my eye on a .22 Beretta for a plinker. There've been a lot of people on the rifle range this summer so i've kind of stayed away from there.

I started on Glock. Still have a 9, .40, and a .45. They really are great guns. I naturally point a 1911 better and I like the feel of a cold stainless steel 1911 .45 better. You can put those glocks through alot of sh!t and they just keep on firing.

Here recently I think I have put more rounds through my Daisy than my Glock... Yes I said Daisy, as in a Daisy BB gun ;D
Semi auto BB pistol, CO2 Powered... A lot cheaper than real bullets and you can shoot it almost anywhere!!
Over the last weekend we were at Lake Laneir, at my parent’s lake house. I decided to tie a beer can to a fishing pole... POW you have an environmentally friendly target... Cast, Shoot, Reel it back in ;D
Anyone who loves shooting should consider one of these... $50.00 for the gun, almost nothing per shot, and it is fun!! Accurate to like 40 ft to...
-
F the daisy, get a pellet gun. I've got a break barrel .177 cal that shoots like 1200fps. Squirrels keep moving for about 5 seconds before they realize they are dead.
I am still gun shopping. My B-day gift this year was a gun...I just have to pick one. Now, who has the best wife?
And Brannon, if your aim is as good as your press tuning...I wouldn't be worried if you carried spare clips. ;D Sorry, I had to.

I've a Sig 9 for carry. The only thing I don't like about the Glock, and a few others like that is you have to pull the trigger to disassemble it and many have shot themselves (or a family member) forgetting to jack the shell in the chamber.

Here's another little Colt I have. It's a discontinued model called the Mustang in a .380. Basically a mini-1911.

For all the Colt fans. This is the only Colt I have.
4" Nickel Python. I believe it was manufactured in 1978.

And it probably came free with your Betamax of Starsky and Hutch. ;D

sun tzu would have thought differently if he had met Sam Colt. I shoot a colt acp 4" barrel but have an itch to get a H&K 40.

I have way too many also. Carry a 40 cal. Kahr most days and a 380 TCP on others. Have a couple of AR and M4 platforms. This week is leaning toward a 204 savage model 12 with a Choate stock. Will thread the barrel for a can and have a 10-40 X 50 Barska on top. It should be a great long range shooter.
-
I carry a Ruger lcp 380 its light and easy to conceal and shoot great for a 2 inch barrel, but until a run in with a crazy guy in the hood of East Cleveland few years back I never carried one I was a trap shooter and that was it.

A lot of cool shoot em ups on here. I just picked this baby up this weekend. All California legal and registered as a pistol. Weird laws we have in this state.

Brandt, this is probably a dumb question but... do you like your FNP-40?
I'm pretty sure I'm gonna get a FNX-40 for the bedside.

And as far as 1911's go... this Kimber is the one that I drool over from time to time.

Yes sir. Can't complaint bit about it!
-
Just out of curiosity what do these guns typically sell for?
-
Gerry that is a very broad question.
The 1911's usually start a little over 1k and easily creep up to 2k.
The FNX-40 should be about $550... you can get a decent 40 for as low as $400.
-
Don't you just love broad questions! How much do you charge to print on shirts? Lol. I just want a cheap home defense gun.
-
Just like anything, you get what you pay for (to a degree).
I still stand by my previous recommendation for an FNX-40 (or the FNP-40, like Brandts... almost identical). Do some searches you will see that it is hard to find a bad thing about these guns and they are a great value.
Plus they have the manual safety + decocker. Meaning you can have one in the chamber ready to go but with a manual safety on as well as a 10lb trigger pull. That's pretty much as safe as it's gonna get if you have one in the chamber.
-
nice pistols fellas

in my opinion, revolvers and even better, shotguns are a better choice for home defense. Shotguns make it easy to hit stuff and just cycling and loading a round might be enough to get the perp out of the house. I like revolvers as they are less complicated then autos and thus easier to use under pressure. For somebody who shoots on regular bases, semis become second nature and the added advantages of more rounds and semi-auto operation are worth the little extra complication involved in operating and maintaining. Revolvers are much simpler by design and under pressure will be easier to use. Another very slight benefit is that if the round misfires, you can just squeeze the trigger and the next one will go off. With semis you will have to fumble with the slide and clear the jammed round. Chances of this are pretty slim, but still the simplicity and reliability are a better choice for many users.
Good quality revolver and shotgun will cost about the same and you should be able to get them for a little less than a semi. I would guess a 12 gauge for shotgun (somebody correct me here if I am wrong), and a .357 for a revolver. The .357 will also shoot .38 special which is cheaper and has less kick. You can go to the range and use the 38 rounds to get going and once proficient, move to the .357.
Something else to consider for home defense is what's behind the walls where you will have the gun and should the rounds go through them. Some are designed to penetrate and some to tumble and stay inside. If your kids are in the next room, you might want them to stop inside the wall, but there are advantages to being able to shoot through them too.
If I needed something for home protection, I would be buying a shotgun though. I have a closet full of guns (several revolvers, semis and a rifle), but would still go and buy a 12 gauge for home protection rather than use what I have.

My 83 year old stepdad tells a WWII story about dropping his M1 on the beach and grabbing a 12 gauge shotgun off a fellow soldier that didnt make it up the beach. he claims the shotgun saved his and his buddies life as the buckshot works better in close quarters.
my first pistol was a 1960 Smith and Wesson model 19, my second is a stainless Beretta 92FS.
i prefer the .38s in the smith - its an older gun and dosent need the stress of a .357 round.
-
there is no better home security system than the sound of a twelve gauge loading a round, it's the universal sound for "get the eff out of here"
my buddy has his grand daddy's m1 and we used to go clack out original era rounds with it. great, accurate gun imho.
these are fun too...
-
Gerry, check out the Springfield Armory lineup. I shopped for a year before I "pulled the trigger" and out of all the major brands, they just appealed to me more. The Glocks', S&W, Browning, Colt, Sig-Sauer were ALL nice, beretta's too, I really would have taken any of them, but there was something that drew me to the SA XD line of pistols, and it didn't hurt that they were priced right. I was prepared to pay over a grand for a good pistol but you really don't have to come close to that.
I bought a smaller, more conceileable 9mm Kel-Tec and that thing jammed up on me the first time I shot it. I don't want to say it was all the gun's fault, the ammo I used could have played a HUGE role but I dropped it off at a local gunsmith and asked them to fix it and then I gave it to my brother.
Totally agree with Pierre, but pistols are cooler :) and more fun to shoot recreationally. We bought my mom a revolver because of the reasons Pierre listed, and she couldn't pull the slide back on my xd-40.
-
I was looking at a Kel-Tec. There goes that...I know they are more of a price point gun, so much for that.
-

I've read a lot of good things about them, before and after so I don't think you should totally discount them. My brother has put a few hundred rounds through it and he said it hasn't jammed on him at all. I will say that shooting it against the other pistols I've shot recently, it is very harsh, very innacurate, kicks like a freaking mule and overall is not pleasant to shoot for fun. That was the little 9mm, maybe their other pistols are better but that little bastard feels like it's going to fly out of your hand when it fires. I hate to dog the pistol so much but comparing it to 3 other pistols that I shoot regularly, it's not fun to shoot. And the thing that dissapointed me the most was it's accuracy. I missed a standard 18"x24" target completely from 15 yards the first time I shot it, scary.
-
My dad picked up a Hungarian PPK knockoff that's a great little pistol. I think I might lean toward something like that. I like the size of the PPK for carrying...but the Walthers are just too damn expensive
-
I agree the XD's are nice pistols. But they are not really cheap. For what they are they are well priced... but you can pick up cheaper guns that are pretty much as good. That FNX-40 is an example.
Things I liked about the XDm were that it was a beautifully crafted machine. It did what it was supposed to and did it well. It felt great to shoot and was accurate. It was a pleasurable gun to shoot and own.
Things I didn't like, Though it has lots of "safety features" such as backstrap safety and trigger safety, I really wished it had at least a decocker. Being striker fire there was only one way to take the pistol out of Condition 0 (A round is in the chamber, hammer cocked, and the safety is off.) Besides dropping the mag and cycling the slide (and double checking via standard manual safety checks).
Personally I prefer to carry my gun in what I call Condition 1.5 (Where the hammer is down (in a double action/single action gun) and the manual safety is on).
I have a two year old and a down syndrome brother-in-law... and though both are pretty smart for their "condition" I'd rather be as safe as possible. Example, I stow the gun away and "hidden" as much as I can when I go swimming at the in-laws... but by chance my bro-in-law comes across it and is having one of his "head up his ass" moments I want to make sure he likely can't do anything with it.

Springfield XDM's are great guns. I have shot 500 rounds and not one problem with my 5.25, 40cal. I just wish the ammo was a little cheaper. $5.00 of ammo per clip adds up fast. I got a Sig 1911, 22cal about 2 weeks ago. Its a fun little gun. 500 rounds is only $20. I have shot 750 rounds with it so far. It has had a few issues. Maybe 10 stove pipes, 30-40 times it didn't load the next round and 2 or 3 other strange things. I guess 50 issues out of 750 rounds is not that bad for a new 22 auto. I have a few upgrade parts ordered for it. we will see if they fix the issues. Still a really fun gun to shoot.
Its cool we have so many shooters on here.

Guess I'll have to look that one up

They have a anodized Pink and black one that is kind of an "electric pink" and I don't care who you are... it's actually a pretty cool looking gun.

I almost got the Mosquito. It has tons of bad reviews. It jams a lot. I read that if you polish the feed ramp that it will work fine. The guy I buy my guns from said if I got one to shoot a few hundred rounds with it then call sig and tell them it jams too much and they will have you send it back to them and they will fix it. He said after they fix them they shoot perfectly. 22s are a lot of fun for the money.
-
SIG is a few towns over (20 minute drive) and i have yet to visit...
Ive been tempted to take some of the SIG academy classes - but at $200 each, it gets a bit pricey.
-

looks rad. if you shoot a lot why not do it with affordable rounds right? my friend just got a 1911 of the same variety. nice gun but it ejected some hot shrapnel in my eye when I shot it, not a fan of that business
-
The sig mosquito Is fun to shoot but if you are looking for something that has a lot less issues check out the S&W M&P 22. It is more of a full size frame and near identical in feel and function as it's 9mm and .40 cal counterparts. I like having the ability to do training and weapons handling drills with something that is similar to my everyday carry weapon but is a fraction of a cost to shoot.

Good thread.
Didn't really expect to read about firearms here, so that's kind of a bonus from a good crew.
As I understand it, many of you in America can carry firearms.
Not a legal option up here, but it might make a more polite society if we could.
( that's kind of a joke, but you likely have to be Canadian to get it )
I've been around firearms all my life.
I'm not a collector, avid shooter, or gun-nut.
I was taught when very young to respect the workings, and also the danger inherent, to all firearms.
I still find I sleep better at night when in proximity to guns and ammo though.
Anyhow, like I said,
Good thread.

We here in Florida are looking at a change to the Stand your ground law. I don't know the specifics of the law, but where it causes concern is some people have obviously thought that it enables them to actually shoot someone if you can justify saying that your life was in danger and they have used this as a way of trying to get away with a shooting. If I'm getting this right, They don't need to have a weapon to be considered a threat on your life. We have two different cases going on here in Florida right now that deals in this specific issue with the law. Me, I am in favor of being able to carry a concealed weapon under license although, I think they need to make be process much more educational and an on going life time class. One day or so a year every year in order to keep the license.
One most recent case on the news is where a guy confronted loud party go'ers at a home several houses down next to his. A party going on late at night with loud music.
The guy apparently thought he could record the incident to show his side, state the phrases "I'm standing my ground", give warnings or something similar...and shoot one or two of them unarmed. He shot. I think he wounded 2 and killed one of them. The video is being used against him now.
http://videocafe.crooksandliars.com/david/stand-your-ground-texas-man-kills-teacher-ov (http://videocafe.crooksandliars.com/david/stand-your-ground-texas-man-kills-teacher-ov)
They just had a "discussion session" on the law here in Fl last week. I'm sure it will be changed or taken out eventually in one of our up and coming elections.
-
That's kinda messed up.
Thing is, you can't do anything against stupidity with legislation.
( which is why so many laws seem ridiculous...they tried, haha FAIL! )
-
In Ohio we have always been open carry in the last 5-6 years we are allowed to conceal carry with training background check and licensing It was not till two years ago we passed the castle doctrine, before that the person defending themselves had to prove the person they shot was there to harm them. Now the burden if proof is on the criminal as it should be. I have read lately that people want to repeal this law they are saying people should not kill someone just because they are breaking into their home. People amaze me

People are stupid, they had a case like that in Florida where somebody at a Wal-Mart was about to stab an employee, like on top of the employee, with a knife and ready to stab them when a woman with a gun stepped in and told the guy to drop it. The interviewed some lady that at the store and she said something to effect of "I can't believe they let people walk around with guns."
Now that is a responsible gun owner.
Also, that guy in Texas that beat to death the guy trying to molest his daughter is well within his right...if the story went down like it's being told.
Same thing as the Trayvon thing, if Zimmerman was walking back to the car, and Trayvon jumped him, and Zimmerman yells for help 14 times before shooting Trayvon, I have to say the law will probably fall on Zimmermans side.
-
A couple of things as I understand them. The case of Robert Zimmerman is not covered under "stand your ground". It is covered under self-defense. All of the hoopla over it as Zimmerman "standing his ground" is news organizations and gun-control advocates who object to the law by claiming it enables people to blow away anyone who looks at them cross-eyed. After its passage in Florida, the Brady people allegedly handed out flyers at the airport to tourists warning them not to upset the locals to avoid getting shot. The "stand your ground" component of the self-defense law states that you have no duty to retreat, that you may defend yourself, or another, against an attack likely to result in grave bodily harm or death, anywhere you're legally allowed to be. It's an extension of the castle doctrine, at least here in Florida, and this is, again, as I understand it.
As for the guy who went over to the neighbor's house to complain about the loud music, toting a video camera and a gun, stating that he "felt threatened" and was "standing his ground" should probably be prosecuted for first degree murder, and for being an a$$hole. The law also states that you can't initiate a confrontation, which is the one fuzzy area of the Zimmerman case -- determining who started the confrontation.
-
I'm with you. Just want to clarify the one point. I don't think that he ever actually went to their house at all. He did confront people on the street somewhere between his house and theirs on the street to ask them to keep the noise down or yo more so to "tell them". The next phase is where as a result of him asking the people on the street, the owners of the house and a few others came down to his house and actually in his driveway to confront him. He then startef the warnings about the gun and the camera and the rest is what you see on the video.
A few experts in the case see it both ways. In the Gun instructors side, he did everything he was trained to do in classes. On the law side, the stand your ground is never in favor of the initiator. As they see it, he initiated and escalated the scene.
-
One more thing about Zimmerman. I think he made a huge mistake leaving his truck. I'm sure he thinks so, in retrospect, and I believe he's regretful. That doesn't exonerate Martin for beating him. The problem is having a concealed weapons permit, and belonging to a Neighborhood Watch Program doesn't confer a "deputy" status on an individual. It wasn't as if he was going to the aid of someone being beaten. He did in fact go looking for Martin. I think he was set upon by Martin after not finding him, but Zimmerman bears some responsibility in the shooting. Why the prosecutor has charged first-degree murder might simply be an opportunity to cool down the hype and protests, knowing full well that a jury won't likely convict under that charge. It wasn't first degree murder. Maybe manslaughter.
It pisses me off that people do foolish things with guns that ultimately threaten our right to own them or carry them for self-defense. Zimmerman is guilty of poor judgement having left his truck with a gun, albeit legally, which escalated into a situation where he was forced to defend himself. Look for trouble while carrying a gun, and you might just find it. If you carry, and find you have to use it, you'd better have all the t's crossed and the i's dotted, because you'll be called upon to justify your judgement in using it.
-
I agree that Zimmerman's choice to leave the truck was a bad one. what I think was a good choice on his part was waiting to get the crap beaten out of him before shooting. He wasn't verbally assaulted by Trayvon, which he would have been well within his rights to do, and Zimmerman would have deserved that. Zimmerman was on his back screaming for help, his first instinct was to scream, not grab his gun and start shooting. In that aspect he show restraint, which I think a lot of people wouldn't have.
It was a series of very bad choices that led to the death of Trayvon, and none of them are reversible.
That being said, I am getting sick and tired of them using a 6 year old photo for Trayvon and Zimmerman's mugshots when the story is in the news.
And another thought...all of the politicians in washington that stepped into the middle of it owe BOTH families an apology, they had no business pushing this story for political gain. And most of the politicians that commented on it and took advantage of it are the dumbest members of congress.
-
Absolutely. It brought out some shameful accusations and political pandering based on nothing.
-
I just recently made an eye opening trip to Alan's shop and right outside of Houston I stopped for gas. As I reached back for my wallet my arm brushed against my gun and I thought... "Woah, I'm in a different state... better hop back in the car and check the law".
Guess what... rootin' tootin' Texas does NOT have an Open Carry law! In fact if you have your gun in your car it MUST be concealed!
I was quite happy to get back in to good ol' Louisiana and put my gun back on my side.
-
Ok have to bring this up cause I got the OK from the misses to proceed especially since I have spent some late nights at the shop printing by myself. So I may have to get myself something for Christmas for a change. So I hear alot of good things about the SA Xd series. I looked them up and am almost concerned that it is "too safe". Do the extra safety features slow you down if you were in an emergency situation and had to make a split second decision?
I hear the Glock is the "least safe" gun.
I would like to hear more about the FNX that was referred to earlier in this thread. I'd really like to be in the sub $400 range.
-
Actually the XD's are AWESOME guns... safe... umm, relative. Those "safety" features won't slow you down a bit. The are not much more than the Glocks. It has a grip "safety" and a trigger "safety". All these do are make sure that you have the grip held and the trigger is deliberately pulled (to a degree). This makes sure you WANT to fire it. But it doesn't keep it from being fired by anyone that can grip it and pull the trigger. The glock just doesn't have the grip safety, it does have a "split" trigger style "safety".
The FNX on the other hand has a decocker, this drops the hammer making it a Double Action trigger pull (10lbs, I believe) which makes it hard for a child to pull. Plus you can also put on the manual thumb safety, this means you have to switch the safety off to pull the 10lb trigger. You don't HAVE to use it. Maybe carry it in the holster in Double Action mode but no safety but when you take the gun off at night put the manual safety on just in case a little one gets a hold of it.
You definitely get more used to carrying it than you think. I'm never really "tested" to see how "instinctively" you would react to a "threat", but the other night I was getting the baby out of the car and the wife had already gone in the house. Well some guy was walking down the street from the other side of the van and I didn't know. He all of a sudden says "hey, where you at man..." he's talking on his cell but because he was just coming around to ear/eye shot it caught me off guard and I had without thinking had my hand on my gun ready to draw but of course it all worked itself out in my head before I had done more that put my hand on the gun. I wasn't about to just blast away, but I wasn't going to have to do much more effort to do what I needed to do if it turned out to be a real "threat".
I'll be making a few purchases pretty soon when we slow down as I'm trading shirts for the guns... my mother is interested in one as well. I'll likely get her a Judge and put a couple of 410 shells in the first few chambers.
-
if you are getting a Judge, look into the Winchester PDX1 rounds. They are friggin' awesome. I bought some for my long gun. They are actually more deadly from a shotgun than the judge since the speed is higher and the grouping is a little tighter.
of course with a .410, a blank is damn effective as well. I sweat that thing will shatter windows if fired indoors.

Good stuff. I am thinking I am going to have to go to a gun range and rent some to see which I like the best. My neighbor at the shop is really into guns and has his CCW. I will be racking his brain quite a bit because just looking online makes every gun look good.

Yeah, the .410 shells being put in first are mainly for scare purposes as well as in case she shoots the wrong person by accident. I'd rather be shot with the .410 round vs the PDX1 round. But following a .410 (or maybe two) I'll probably load her up with the PDX1's. If she's fired twice and still shooting chances are whatever is being shot needs to go down.

Geez the more I look into guns the more confusing it gets. I'm gonna try and make it to a gun show that's happening this Saturday to confuse me even more. The only thing for certain that I want is a 9mm due to the fact the ammo is much cheaper than 40 or 45 and I know im gonna want to shoot the hell out of it at the range.

I generally suggest a revolver to get started. They are much simpler device and are less likely to jam (which does not say much as a good semi will very rarely jam, but it does happen). It will be easier to clean too and easier to learn to use it.
A medium frame 357 is a great option. You can get .38 specials for the range (cheap!) and once comfortable get some 357's for the defense. It packs a ton of punch!

I love my Smith & Wesson Model 19 - perfect size - i rarely put .357s in it. i looked up the serial number in a S&W book - says its from the early 60s
after shooting the S&W for a few years, i bought a Beretta 92FS. still love the S&W though
-
I think I didn't mention that this isn't my first gun. In my younger before kids and marriage I had a 22 revolver. Fun little thing. Im trying to talk the wife into a revolver for herself and the 9 for me.

OK gun pros. Went to a "gun" show this weekend and was very dissapointed. A "gun" show with only 1 vendor that actually had guns to "show"!!! The 1 vendor at least had one gun that I was interested in and was able to hold although he did not have much to tell me about it and that was the Ruger SR9.
Well I got a question for the gun pros here. Striker fired or hammer fired semi auto pistols. Whats the difference and would one be better than other? What about for concealed carry? Is one preferred over the other?
-
The sr series is nice, I like them. Looked at the compact long and hard at one point, but you can realistically only buy so many guns at one given time. :)
Not sure what your questions are about hammer vs striker, sr and glock is striker 1911's and fnx40 is hammer. Obviously many others in both variations. I like both... Most "modern" strikers have pretty decent indicators, but hammer is always more visible. Not many striker can decock and go into double action mode, Taurus has a couple. I like this feature, as I have said before, due to making it harder for a child to pull the trigger in a worse case scenario.
-
What I thought I read and of course I may be wrong is that a striker fired pistol is more "dangerous" with one in the chamber carrying concealed versus a hammer fired pistol with one in the chamber carrying concealed.
-
Umm... Depends on the gun. Basically reasons I just gave. My glock for example doesn't decock and only has the two piece trigger for "safety" purposes... This could get snagged on something and cause it to fire. On the other hand not much different in overall function/design, the xdm that I used to have and Alan has, has a handle safety as well as the split trigger so they both have to be engaged. That is less likely to happen.
Now if you carry a hammer cocked then its not much different, but in double action mode it is as ten lbs is less likely to happen plus they usually have manual safeties. But you can get that in striker fire as well... The wife's Taurus 24/7 was one... Striker fire, decocker and manual safety...but no split trigger or grip safety tricks.
-
Gerry, properly holstered and properly carried, either type of weapon is reasonably safe. At first you may be nervous carrying "cocked and locked" 1911 style. I was nervous at first pocket carrying my chambered, holstered Kahr PM9 which is a striker fired subcompact. You will get used to it, and a weapon not ready to fire when needed is waaaaay less safe for you (and those you love) in an armed encounter, than a properly holstered live weapon of any type. Truth is, you probably ought NEVER be carrying without some....um....elevated awareness of the fires of hades you are ready to unleash. Not sweaty nervousness. Just....circumspectly aware....
Training and practice is the key to confidence and safety. Always practice safe holstering, and practice more.
I got over the nerves by carrying for a few weeks with a dummy round in the pipe. Every time I needed reassurance that the weapon had not "dummy" fired, I would take it out in a safe place and check. Of course, it was still cocked and the jitters soon went away. I'm not really recommending the practice....it's just how I got over it. If I hadn't succeeded, I would have begun carrying my 357 revolver. An unintentional discharge with that weapon, a Ruger SP101 just seems physically impossible to my tiny brain. Keep in mind that with a dummy round, your weapon is little better than grabbing your shoe and trying to club your attacker into submission, since he ALWAYS knows what he's up to before you do.
Having said all that, nothing and I MEAN NO-THING on the planet is 100% safe, including eating carrots, or drinking water. A 1911 "cocked and locked" carry by a trained and current shooter, is probably statistically safer than printing shirts with a 700+ degree flash over dry cotton tinder, with hundreds more ready to ignite. Would that principals in our schools and other interested teachers with appropriate training would be allowed to carry. It would cost tax payers nothing.
I wouldn't choose what to carry based solely on striker fired or not. That would be way down on the list. It has to fit your hand, be carryable with your size and frame, and be 100% reliable.
My 2 cents....
-
Awesome info, thanks guys. Me and my wife are planning a couple trips to the range to rent some guns to get her comfortable with a gun in her hand and actually shooting it and me to be able to get my hands on a number of different brands/models to see what fits best for her and I.
-
There is some great advice in the above posts. You are doing the right thing taking the opportunity to handle and fire different firearms before you make a final choice. The bottom line is that you have to feel both comfortable and confident with your chosen weapon. I see so many people, friends and family included, that get there CCW license and throw a gun in there purse or in a holster and feel appropriate with that. You need to know that weapon back and forth, top to bottom and inside and out. Your chosen firearm should feel like an extension of your body. The movements to load, chamber, etc. should be second nature. I am lucky enough to live in an area where I have a range and can shoot anytime I wish too. We have a great group of people we shoot with here and are always pushing each other to better are handling and shooting skills. There are so many handguns on the market today that make great carry weapons. I personally rotate weapons depending on mood or what I am doing that day. My primary rotation includes a Taurus TCP .380, a Kahr .40, Springfield Ultra Compact 1911, M&P .40 and now my new favorite... the M&P .40 Shield.

training, training, training. If you ever need to use your gun it is in the best interest of you and everybody around you to be well trained. It turns out there was a guy that "confronted" the Clackamas mall shooter. He has his gun out, but never fired a shot because if he missed he would have hit the folks behind his target. The shooter saw he was being followed and went into a store a killed himself. Problem solved, no additional shots fired.
Also, a guy was going to try and take down Jared Loughner, he never even removed his gun from the holster.
I was looking at stats of how many people have used a gun to protect themselves and most of the time they never fire a shot.
I would recommend some good training courses. I took a great hunters course when I was 14 or 15, my dad is smart about gun safety...and I learned which eye was my dominant one.
-
I'm going to be taking a tactical gun training course in February. I've handled guns all my life but I think the additional training will benefit me and my family if the need ever arises.
-
Gun saftey goes out the window for most people when in a panic or danger, just like driving a car and you do that every day, but still people panic or just blank out on what to do, but I will agree its good to have the traning then not.
Darryl
-
that is what the training is for. even in a crisis, following your training will help you stay calm because you know what to do.
-
D....coming for a guy who has had many many years of training both on handguns and long rifles...training is the key....if you have the proper training..I do not care what they throw at you, you will go back to your training...you mention driving a car...people do not train to drive in a car regularly...they drive them but they are not training...they are just driving...even now I continue to train with the weapons I own....that is the key...keep training...

I train for other things all the time, on the rare occasion it happens..that's why I take long showers. ;)

Sam is right... More to the point ppl drive regularly every day... How much easier is it to drive now vs when you started driving at 15? That is semi-training for basic driving. Now if you we're able to practice emergency procedures regularly you would be better ready if the need arises.
I'm much better at watching for other ppl while driving because I rode a motorcycle for so many years and you HAVE to watch for other ppl then... Training in a form.
-
I've read remarks that everyone should have to ride a motorcycle before getting a license to drive a car. I can say that after 30 years on two wheels, you're senses are heightened. Lots of idiots out there, some of them on motorcycles, too. I rode the Tail of the Dragon one Fourth of July, and coming around a curve, if I'd been in a car instead of on the scooter, the rider coming the other direction would've been a stain.
-
Ok I've been getting convinced by a number of gun enthusiasts around me to go with a Glock. I'm liking the baby Glock26. Anyone here have one? It states that it has a state of the art safety system which doesn't seem state of the art. Its just a trigger safety.
-
You will find some that love em and some that don't.
Personally, I do not like them. For the reasons you mentioned. No safety and......when disassembling for cleaning, you have to pull the trigger as part of the process. Oh and be sure you kicked the live shell out of the chamber when you dropped the clip....hint...hint.
I have a Sig 9mm. for conceal carry.
Glock has a Polymer frame (fancy plastic)
Cleaning instructions on the Glock ------ Cleaning the Glock Series (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YBzm50GlptQ#)
-
I know own that Glock 19 that my buddy let me borrow (well, soon after I embroidery about 15 articles of clothing for him). I still don't like it.
Like said... no safety. I personally practice a high amount of awareness and safety when dealing with it. But it NEVER comes out the holster that requires pressing the button to get it out. Even that isn't enough once the baby gets a bit older, but that is when a LOT of discussions will take place teaching her of the dangers of it. Right now, we just keep it out of reach or on my hip. As time goes on "out of reach" won't be practical. This is where safeties and double action come into play... at least to me and the wife.
The Glock will find a home somewhere... just not sure where yet.
FNX-40 will be bed side, Taurus PT740 will be my carry (I hope I can mod the grip to be something I love... or I just come to terms with I hope to never have to really hold that grip and just deal with it.)
On the plus side... a Glock is a fine shooting gun that you CAN'T mess up. That thing can come out of a week in the mud and fire without an issue. I just personally don't like it and the wife HATES them (she thinks their "ugly" ;) ).
-
I have a Springfield XDM 5.25 bitone over 1200 rounds and not one mess up. They are almost exactly like a Glock. I liked the glock but didn't like that everyone had them and they have a ghetto vibe to them. Don't get me wrong they are the most reliable gun on the market something like only 30 parts. The XDM is the same plastic handle and the same reliability (maybe not as good, some say). I got the XDM for 2 reasons like you I wanted a gun with more safety features and it was a step up from the ghetto gun. The XDM has a palm safety like a 1911 and the trigger safety like the Glock. No hard safety but with both of those you have to be holding the gun tight to shoot it. I keep it very far away from anyone. Its for target shooting not so much protection. If some one did Break in my house it would take me about 2 mins to get it. Not really protection but an option. The other part that made me get an XDM over the Glock is you can reload the brass with the XDM. The glock will egg shape the brass. This makes it harder to reload and shoot. I was told it is possible but you need the right loading equipment. Not a deal breaker for me since I don't have time to deal with that but maybe some day. I keep all my brass just in case. Good luck. Don't put to much pressure on your first gun. You will be getting your second gun in just a few weeks after your first. That is what I did.
-
Great stuff Jon. Someone else actually gave me that same advice. Just get one.. The problem with me is im a research guy and the more I research the more options I have and the longer it will take to make a decision.
-
The problem im finding is that the selection for 9mm guns is very limited due to people buying them up and also the California compliance makes for a slim supply.
-
I was unaware the brass from the Springfield was less deformed. I sometimes pick up range brass, and you can kind of tell the "Glocked" brass is more distorted than my Kahr or my Taurus. Not a huge difference though. I save my spent cases, if I can find them also.
Saving brass is sure easier with a wheelgun.
I load "light" recipes for practice loads anyhow with 9X19. And for protection, I've read you don't want to shoot reloads, for legal purposes, as well as consistency. I think the danger of a split case from over worked brass is way less a concern than lead buildup with cast boolits in a polygonal rifled barrel. My 357 gets some near true Magnum loadings from time to time. Never a problem, and I shoot hard cast lead sometimes.

The problem im finding is that the selection for 9mm guns is very limited due to people buying them up and also the California compliance makes for a slim supply.
Your in California. You can't have more than 10 round mags there right? My gun case said right on it not to be sold in California. My XDM mags hold 16 rounds I think. I never load more than 10 at the range. Good luck picking. I did a ton of research also. If I was going to get a carry gun I would get a SIG SAUER’s P238. A client of mine came in a showed me his and it was really nice. Its what he carry's. He has over 50 guns so he knows a little or is just a collector.

The Sig is definitely a good gun. The wife wants the rainbow 380 for carry but I can't see spending that much money on a 380. LOL

I'm really liking the compact 9mm right now but the full size Berreta 92fs and Taurus 92 are bad ass.
-
Agreed... I do think a Berreta 92fs is sexy.
-
I think I'll buy the compact first and then a full size down the road for fun.
-
Agreed... I do think a Berreta 92fs is sexy.
I've got the Taurus knock-off of the 92 in black. I do DISlike that piece immensely. Sure wish I'd have spent the extra $ for the genuine article, but that's been 15+ years ago. Taurus makes better stuff now. I've been sporting a 9X19 pocket piece for a couple of years now and I'm pretty happy with it. Kahr PM 9 in black and stainless with a Crimson Trace. Fine weapon, but I was doing it over, I'd have a serious talk with my Ruger Salesman about an LC9. I you can handle and pocket a sub compact 9 with your particular build, habits, and temperament, it is a reasonable compromise between concealability and that elusive One Shop-Stopability of heavier equipment.
The best gun you'll ever use for self defense, is the one you actually HAVE! when Mr. Turdhead shows up. What you really WANT is a shotgun.... with 3 or 4 rounds of 00 buck and a place to duck from the splatter.
But if all you'll actually carry and practice with is a diminutive 380 Seecamp then that is what you'll have to go with. That trumps a breathless one-liner hurredly whispered to The Deity. (Which isn't a bad idea either. Probably automatic anyhow...)
-
Yeah, I've thought long and hard about the Taurus "knock off"... but if I get a 92 model vs a 100 model then I might as well get the "real deal" as it would be more for "collecting" vs purpose as I just love the look.
Plus if I keep this Glock 19 then I'll have a 9mm in the bunch anyway which I was going to avoid and buy all 40's... but can't beat the price for the glock 19. (essentially free to me)
-
I don't own a 40. And I'll bet I'm the only printer on this board who's had a loaded Glock 19 stolen out of his tunnel dryer...during business hours.
A bewildering scenario, (and a mistake on my part) I kept a loaded 9X19 Glock with one in the pipe, hidden but accessible in a spot mostly known only to me, or so I thought...in my tunnel dryer. We print in a tough part of the city actually, and in the warm months, the back door is often open from my print floor--into an alley. The dregs of society meander through the alley nightly, just trying doors, to see what might pop up....
On our about Oct 1st 2011 at quitting time I suppose...., somebody apparently wandered in that must have known about this weapon, while I was elsewhere in the building, snatched that sucker and made off with it. Our screenprinting operation is mostly a one man show, and it was I crime of opportunity. I do have a suspect or two, but I'm doubtful either of them would have done this to me, even if certain they'd get away with it.
I'm smarter now. And the police know about it, so when the human turd that took it, or his business associates... eventually gets caught with it in the commission of a felony, I'm not going to jail. The handcuffs kinda hurt my aging shoulders.

When I was in a warehouse, I had to leave the rollup door open cause it was hotter than hell. No back door. In the early evening my shop was the only business still operating in the industrial park, and there were some "apartments" just up the street. It wasn't unusual for slow roll-by's through the parking lot in the evening, so I kept my pistol loaded. Black and silver. My squeegees are silver and dark blue, so I'd leave the gun behind me on the shelf with the squeegees. It was virtually invisible, but within a step or two if someone came in looking to do some uninvited after-hours "shopping", and I had no way to get out but through them.
-
I wish I could carry a 12 gauge. I think things are getting worse in the cities.
"Shopping" is an appropriate term for what happens nearly every night where our shop is located.

I looked for a long time till I found one that appealed to me. Now my tastes are changing a little bit since borrowing a badass 1911 for a while. I love the short barrel of my XD40 sub and it's extremely accurate for such a short barrel, but the longer barrel pistols, 5" or so is really something I'm looking at getting just to have. The XD sub is always going to be my carry piece since it's packing quite a punch in a very maneagible package, it will fit in most of my pockets but it's heavy as hell with the big clip fully loaded. For some reason the Glocks never appealed to me, Baretta...meh, but the Springfields just did and so when I had the look I wanted, then I started researching reliability and quality and the XD line was the winner for me. Oh yeah, price was a concern obviously so some of the sweet custom pieces were out of the question so I needed to stick with the XD, Glock, Baretta, Taurus, S&W, etc.
It may not be important to some but the two big safety features of the XD were very important to me. The trigger safety and the grip safety will probably be on every pistol I own from now on. It's just one of those things I "think" I have to have and it makes the wife feel a little bit safer with them in the house. I've heard some people talk negatively about the dual safeties on pistols but I personally don't think you need to be firing a pistol without being gripped properly and that's what it makes sure you're doing before it will fire, I think it's genius. Sure, accidents can still happen, but it makes it way more unlikely. I've read that it's just a false sense of security and the opposite, that it could hinder your chance of protecting yourself in a quick thought situation but I'm not buying that.
This was the first part of my research, then I got into what really matters in a personal piece.

My dad has the XDM45 and a SW M&P40 and the SW isn't near as accurate as my XD and it doesn't feel as if it is as quality of a piece as the XD, even though I know it is. I actually dislike the M&P when shooting it next to the XD and XDM, but I'd take one if someone gave it to me. The XDM45 is the second finest pistol I've shot, behind an SVI Infinity 45. It wasnt' as accurate as the SVI but it was pretty close, and I doubt anything is going to feel as effortless and smooth as the SVI, it is truly a luxury ride compared to the other pistols I've shot. But it's not really fair to compare the SVI to a gun you can buy in a case at the sporting goods store, it's in a completely different league.

.357 revolver! My first gun was a Taurus .357. Easy to use, easy to clean and will get the job done. You can go to the range and practice with .38 specials and have .357 for home defense.
For my hand, medium size frame is the way to go (model 66). They should be in the $400 range based on the following review (mine is a '94 model):

I am going to have to throw this out . . .
Yes, I believe the SVI to be the best gun money can buy (happen to have one as mentioned on the first page of this thread), but more importantly, XDm is designed and made in Croatia! As some here know, while born here in USA, I am of Croatian descent and have lived there for a very long time (17 years).

Im on a gun craze now. Picked up a xd9 sub compact. Sweet gun. Also picked up a little Mossberg 715T tactical 22lr, fun to shoot as well. Looking for a 12 gauge shotgun next or an ar15 or ak47.

I have an AK. Registered legally here in Cali as a pistol so they cannot take it away. Wanna do some trading or you can buy it.... ;)

LOL Nice!
I have an $1,800 credit with one of the local gun shops for printing shirts for them. Just waiting for them to get the pieces we want! I have a nice wish list and more shirts to print soon I hope!
Also trying to work out a deal with another gun shop in central Louisiana as well! :)

Funny you posted this up again. I just came fro my truck and something reminded me of a time back when I lived in PA. While driving to work in the am, on a semi country road. Two beautiful large dogs ran out in front of a truck in front of me. One right after the other playing chase. well, they both got hit. Both wee still alive and now laying, barley yelping in some lady's yard. She came out, I stopped and the guy that hit them kept driving. The owner of the dogs happened to be now driving off to work and saw the commotion and realized they were his dogs.
They lay there, bloody, broken bones, alive but still seizing. The owner takes a gun out of his truck and shoots one in the head while bellowing out cries of sorry. The other lay in misery with obviously no way to recover, but the guy had only one bullet. He asked me if he can use mine. I didn't have one on me.
The lady that owns the yard they lay in, says hold on, you can use mine. So she goes in and comes right back out as if it were near the door. She lets him use her gun on the last one and that was that. He picked them both up, laid them in the truck and that was that.
Don't know why, but I happened to be thinking of that in my truck while out on a run and just came back in.
Just goes to show tho, that most everyone in Pa has one ready for at least one shot. Even the ladies.

Dan what does your story have to do with the video of guys shooting guns under water. That is the saddest story I have heard for a while.
Why have a gun with one bullet? Was it Barney Fife?

Well, the original post was pertaining to 1911's so we have been way off topic to that specific original post to begin with. So, it's not you're thread to get riled over. :0
My post was a continuation of various gun stories that have transpired along the way. It was a gun related story. It was sad. Just something I happened to be remembering and the point was, I was surprised to actually see a women that had her own gun and very near by and ready if needed. Where I grew up, It was talked about, but I never saw a women have one so it was something that sparked a memory. And I wouldn't call that guy a barney Fife. He was pretty burley. Might have been that he had just shot off a few the night before and didn't re-load. Who knows.
Pardon me for not replying to your specific post. Since this is up to 8 pages, I'm sure it may not be the last that does not specifically pertain. It was not intended to lessen your post.
-
Dan,
I understand your point. I was not "riled". Your post made me think someone posted the under water video already.
"And I wouldn't call that guy a barney Fife. He was pretty burley."
Didn't call him a barney fife for the way he looked. In the show Andy only let barney Fife have one bullet. I honesty think he was a bigger man then me.

watched the vid. Very cool. Seems like the 2nd gun was a 38 (guessing) and surprised to see how much compression it had near the cylinder that comes out. Also surprised to see how much they lower and raise in the water. Thought it would just go straight.

My son just came in and he's a gun guy. I showed him the vid just now and he said, "I just watched these same guys on youtube doing the same thing with an AK".

My buddy and I got to shoot a .50 Cal the other day. My landlord was nice enough to let us shoot HER gun. Nothing pulls your man card quicker than a short 100lb girl coming out of her gun safe with a 50 almost as tall as her and taking us out in the pasture in her H1 Hummer to fire $11 bullets.

My question is, why does YouTube allow 1080p if they are never going to allow their servers the ability to serve out such a resolution?!
I have a fiber connection here that can easily pull 2MB/sec down (16mb, though I pay for 10) with VERY little latency (scary sometimes). Yet youtube chokes on anything above 720p.

I just picked up this little gun over the holidays. It's a low-mid level Para-USA Elite 1911. Para has had QC issues in the past especially when they moved their production facility from Canada to North Carolina but over the past few years it seems as if they've gotten their quality standards up so I took a chance on this pistol. 100 rounds through it with no failures of any kind so I feel confident Para got this one right. A month or so ago my dad got a cheap Rock Island 1911 and it's solid and after shooting a high end SVI for a while I got the itch to get the 1911 platform. Although the polymer framed pistols have their place, nothing in my opinion beats the looks and feel of the 1911. I'll still shoot the XDM 45 and XD 40 from time to time, but this pistol has quickly become my favorite and even though it's larger than the XD 40, I'll be carrying this gun most of the time.
I think as I get more into the 1911 I'll start customizing this gun with a few personal touches and perhaps some higher end components on the inside but for right now it's a decent pistol that feels great to shoot.

This is what i have. a S&W 32 with a 2" barrel. I am not a gun guy but this was my fathers. Not the one in the pic but exactly the same, he had it since he was in the marines and we used to target practice all the time in the back yard. I know its small but if someone came in to my place with bad intentions trust me it will stop a person in their tracks.

I had a Ruger 9mm semiautomatic that I'd bought for protection when I was in a warehouse. The only failures I ever had with it was with PMC range ammo, and then maybe two or three misfeeds out of a box of 50.
This past year I was getting a lot of failure-to-feeds and failure-to-ejects. I always kept the gun clean and could never figure out where the problem was, until I used some 2-year old ammo that shot perfectly. Just a guess, but I was suspicious that with the ammo shortages, if maybe some of the lower-priced rounds were lacking in quality-control. Mechanically I could find nothing wrong with the gun. After getting my concealed carry permit, I got a bit spooked as to the reliability of the gun.
Traded it in for a Ruger LCR 38sp + p. 1/3 the available rounds, but at least when I pull the trigger, I know it'll fire. A bit more difficult to fire accurately, too, with such a short barrel, but light enough to slip in a pocket without your pants sagging.
-
you know guns kill people we should outlaw them all!
-
Please try to keep this section more about the appreciation of guns and not so much (the fight to keep them). Keep that in the cage.
Family guns passed down seem to be the best. I wish I still had my grandfathers guns. He had nice collectables. + a 1892 (old Betsy) double barrel shot gun. The barrel was super long. I remember the ends of the barrels being so thin tho. Had a lot of use.
My father-in-law had his fathers German Luger from WW1. We've shot that. Nice. My son just bought his first rifle. A Russian Mosin NagantThey are very common, THe Russians made millions of them but pretty darned accurate from a distance but very heavy also.

When trying to state a point, name calling like "Repukes" isn't going to win anybody to your side.
banning certain guns won't have an effect since most gun deaths are from handguns that are illegally obtained.
Sorry Brad but I am getting sick and tired of a certain political group and their constituents constantly lying and putting words in other peoples mouths.
LOL Sam, way to take a perfectly good thread and throw it in the Cage!. :P
I love guns and shooting and I've been digging this thread... looks like many of the fellow Cage-bangers here on the Left also have them. I know many others who do, as well as many Right-wingers who wouldn't have them in their house if you gave them one. Goes to show that reality is different from the one being peddled by those who want to tell us how to think.
So back to the original intent of this thread... has anyone here ever done Practical Shooting competitions? What a rush!

Mike it was a joke. I have enough guns to support a small army.
But thanks for the name calling since it is the dems who want to outlaw them.
Oh yeah. Who shoots IDPA? Now that is awesome
Sam
Not IDPA, but I shot USPSA/IPSC back in the day... Just Standard (minor) with a 9mm Ruger, but I got to see hot rodders like Rob Leatham in action. Ever shoot one of those tricked-out race guns? Like a dragster... not good for anything but racing, but wow, the mods make a .45 shoot like a .22.
The SVI I have (picture somewhere in the beginning of this thread, is a modified IPSC .45. It does not have all the bells and whistles, so it only kicks like a .38 special, but holy crap is it easy to shoot. Anybody ever in Cleveland area should stop by and we'll go to the range. I might consider bringing it to AC for a fun night out (would have to confirm transportation legalities and availability of a gun range there first though).

Since it was only a .22 after close 4 of us took it into the basement and went through a couple hundred rounds. Then he picked up a new Bushmaster one that fires a .223, told him we better test the sight on that puppy somewhere else ;D
I got one of those Mossberg's, fun gun and cheap, picked mine up for $250 on sale, it doesn't like to be dirty lol. And last time out as my son was shooting it had a squib and something broke on it. Gotta break it down and see what happened.

I thought about a 40 cal since the ammo now is about the same price as 9mm. But since I have a sub compact 9 I figured I need a full sized 45!

I used to shoot IDPA... while just a 'game', it really taught me a lot about myself, getting on target quick, and practical self-defense... (oh, and the 'night' shoots with a handheld flashlight were fun too).
total rush when the buzzer goes off...
SHOOTER READY?

The night shoots I did were on a lit course, but with smaller metal targets instead of the cardboard silhouettes. They would "ping" when hit. Yes, great training for focus and coordination and yes, total rush. If I remember correctly, the night shoots weren't scored or awarded.
