I've been thinking of getting a wider format for film output. I am currently using an epson 1430 with Film Maker. The first question would be 4800 or 4900? From reading tidbits here and there, most are using all black inks with their set ups. What is the process to make this ALL BLACK ink set up work and with what inks?

stick with 4800 or 4880. When EPSON upgraded to 4900 hey made some changes that are making the printers pretty unreliable. I think they were trying to cut costs on the materials and the 4900s are almost disposable now unlike the previous generation.
Also, stick with one black ink (Chromaline AccuInk) and get refillable blank cartridges to run cleaning solution in them.

you cant buy 4880s anymore they dont make them. The 4900 is your only option. My opinion, it sux! I had 3 of them. One I never even took out of the box from Epson and another member here bought it from me and he had problems with it also. CTS if you can afford it. If not there is a little birdy here on the forum who has I think 300-400 4880s new and never used!

How much are they?

4800 used, 400 -500 probably. We loved ours, but when the head died, it was twice as expensive to replace it, couldn't find a used one at a good price locally, and went with a 3800 that was practically brand new (couple hundred prints) for 450. No roll feature, but prints great. We keep our eyes open for another 4800 for a backup...

and ditto what Pierre said, run one channel only, much better dots when you don't have 6 or 8 heads printing the same dot...
