Title: Blasted clipping mask!
Post by: Gilligan on January 20, 2015, 04:54:47 PM
We've been lucky to never really deal with them.

Now here comes this seemingly simple thing.

No understanding of what is going on here.  I get down to the "bitmap" level and can change the color of the texture but can't seem to break it out into anything else.  Did a few searches and tried what they were suggesting for others but either I'm not understanding or it's one of those things where everyone is unique.

Please take a look and let me know what you think is the best way to handle this.

I'm confused. Are you just trying to sep this or remove the distress mask to make it solid?
I opened the PDF in Photoshop, flat, then did a simple Background Erase.  What's the trouble?

Yea, separate it to print.

We work 99% of the time in Illustrator.

I had my guy drop it in PS to start with but I thought it was raster.  Then when his DCS file wasn't working for him I sat down and saw it was an embedded smart object and thought... wait it's vector?  And then he told me it was PDF... so I went back to vector and started working it that way.

Should I just stick with standard PS seps?

I would throw it in PS and sep it quick and easy. Here it is, ready to roll.

Similar to what I came up with.

I think I see what my guy had done wrong.

So this is the best way to handle something with a clipping mask like this?

I can't say it's the best way, but it's definitely the fastest way (for me at least).

I hate hate hate the clipping masks. If there are too many I will sep in PS as well. If there is crisp vector elements in the art you may need to do it at a high ppi.

Go to Object.......Flatten Transparency. Then use the pathfinder tool and divide. You can then sep it like normal.
