Title: Saati Direct Prep 2 split from Discharge Emulsion thread
Post by: alan802 on March 19, 2015, 01:22:23 PM
Eric, are you guys using the Saati Direct Prep 2 with the PHU?  Is anyone here using the direct prep product?

This piqued my interest. Though not a new product, new to me. degreaser with a wetting agent, apparently to aid emulsion application.(specifically Photopolymer emulsion)

Thing is, they also market a version of this also containing an abrader. New mesh abraders have been put into disrepute by most experts as shown to cause more harm than benefit. I realize that this discussion is not about abraders, but since we all seem so interested in companies utilizing the most current tech and information, I worry a bit about those who appear to be behind the curve.

I used to use Ulano's "Magic Mesh Prep" with cap film, the wetting agent was helpful in that application for sure.  Never used a wetting agent rich mesh prep for direct emulsion.  We degrease with CCI's Envirowhatever degreaser.  I'm not picky about degreasers so long as they rinse 100% clean.  I think the term for that is that they are completely miscable with water?

Does a wetting agent really help with direct emulsion coating?

This Saati stuff has been around a long time, and I'm surprised that it has never come up before.

We used their Direct Prep before.  It will stain the crap out of your mesh if you end up using a dual cure emulsion on prepped screens.

Otherwise, using a Nuarc 3140 1k metal Halide bulb, I noticed no long term difference between using the prep and not.  Side note: For us anything over 1k prints with HSA/WB/Discharge we will bullet proof the screen for insurance.  Built into the price of printing.

We just tried out  - again - the Murakami Aquasol HV and it is not as good as the Saati PHU.  But it is soooooooo smooth.

I noticed that while the PHU has amazing resolution with a REALLLLLY wide exposure latitude, I still want to use a dual cure emulsion for all my sim-process level halftone work.  Primarily with 10% dots and lower.

Oh, I still hate that the emulsion will crack along the squeegee edges.... We will still run a strip of tape along that edge.

Over all:  Try the PHU, you will love it.

I don't have time to post info now but we go through stages of using it...... It def has it's advantages over not using it I will say though

We currently use it (using up our last gallon now).  I can see the difference when coating with it and without it.  We are switching over to all Easiway product so we will be moving to their prep (screen perfect).

I think the cost is fine for the direct prep, it washes out quick and easy to see.  I would probably continue using it but am really going after easiway all across our shop from screen breakdown to press wash.

Been using it since Saati Rep stopped by a demoed it about 6 months , beats any degreaser/screen prep I've tried. I have hard water and I see that it really helps with any hard water deposits.  I blow the excessive water with a shop vac and before would still have some small deposits.  Now non at all and since using seems like a 2/1 always results in a glistening coat.

interesting about the mention of hard water. I wonder if water conditions in general are a big factor on how much of an improvement this stuff provides.

btw, our water is not hard, and the home brew folks just a few miles away with harder water from a different utility, claim to hold an advantage.
Of course, for my fish tanks, our water is also almost perfect ph.

We filter our water now, both hot and cold which eliminates a lot of what a degreaser has to do I think but yeah, hard/soft water could really play into the need for something like this product.

Anything that cleans the mesh more throughly, rinses cleaner and dries faster is a-ok by me.  I just think it would be kinda tough to side by side it with another degreaser, the differences would be so minute or hard to quantify.

I'm pretty sure we use that combo as well. We have great screens so..

VERY noticeable difference when coating PHU with or without the direct prep.

I will get busted for the use of this term but the PHU coats much 'smoother' with the direct prep than without.  Oooh shiney,  so pretty.......

No experience with other than SAATI emulsion, we are hooked on the PHU.

Any explanation why it is said to aid coating with photopolymer emulsions but not diazo?

Good enough for me.  We'll try it out.

I thought about trying it out with one of my other PP emulsions but I may get a gallon of the PHU to try out.  I like the emulsions I'm using now, HVP and River City has a new orange emulsion out that is, in my opinion, a lot better than the Ulano Orange and it's stupid cheap so if anyone likes the orange emulsion you should get some from Kevin and try it out.

WTH is direct prep?

Before I order emulsion, just to recheck what I thought I read over on my thread, the Saati PHU is a premix, right?  No Mixing of 2 components?

Correct, a photopolymer emulsion and the Direct Prep 2 is their degrease and wetting agent combo.

I've used Easiway Screen Perfect but typically only on higher mesh counts. Really does help with overall emulsion smoothness and pretty much eliminates fisheyes and other issues.

I suppose the Direct Prep is the same?

Going to try the PHU. We are looking for the holy grail emulsion that plays well with discharge, wb and eventually HSA but doesn't take forever to expose. Until we get some cash flow to replace the 3140, that's our current choke point.

PHU can also be enhanced with diazo, correct?

I don't have time to read all the posts, but for what it's worth, we've been using it forever; when you rinse it off, you can see in the way the water runs off if it's clean or not, and the screens coat beautifully.

I take back my previous comment, I believe we are actually using direct prep 3.

We have been textile pv emulsion with it but are now testing ulna orange with the new workhorse exposure.

Direct prep 1, has a abraded in it for new mesh, direct prep 2 ready to use, direct prep 3 concentrated direct prep 2.

When rinsing with the direct prep due to the mesh wettability you can see and contanimants on the screen if any present.

I know it helps with hard water but should help with soft water also.
