We use DCUB pretty frequently with plastisol jobs, but we are doing more and more WB prints lately. So that got me wondering, can we use HSA bases on plastisol prints?
and can we use DCUB on WB prints?
-
I'm not anyone to really answer this but when has that stopped me before? ;)
If going WB, why not just go Discharge all the way around... my understanding is that is the way to go.

I haven't had the best luck using dcub with wb top colors. Even with a nice long flash of the ub the top colors just look washed out a lot of the time.
To answer the why not just all DC vs dcub with wb top: sometimes a shirt will DC a neutral/white base fine but something like a yellow DC will look like crap. In those cases you can theoretically print the DC base and have a better looking top yellow. Problem is the top colors tend to pastel a bit in my experience, but the that is better than having a mustard green poop color if that makes sense.

Gilly: DC doesn't work in some situations, certain colors, certain fabrics, etc. That's when DCUB comes into play,
as some situations the fabric will discharge enough to overprint with opaqueish plastisols and achieve bright prints.
If not, and still trying to stay in the waterbased realm, HSA's come out.
Just got in Virus Optimoon, an HSA white that can supposedly be overprinted with plastisol.
I don't see too many benefits to doing so but we'll see.
Regular WB over DCUB is like Mimosa says. WB colors are too thin to pop on anything other than stark white.
Technically it can be done but the results are not usually what you are looking for.

sorry i should have clarified, we'd be using an HSA overprint

I do hit, I overprint plastisol with 305 screen.
You will have a soft hand print, very very nice.
Curing time is critical, in my opinion it is better to use 3% of Universal fix in the optimoon.

Awesome, thanks for the first hand info. We're about to run it here.

You can try to print WB colors down first, then print the discharge base on top. Works pretty well, you only have to activate on ink in this case. Agree with all that willy35 says, use the fixer. The hand is great. You can also use most WB bleed blockers under plastisol as well. This will help a lot with matting the fibers down and give you a much thinner print. HSA on top of discharge works very well as well. Cure time is very important will all WB inks, normally much more time in the oven than plastisol.

I guess this is more of what i was looking for. We are starting to do alot more bleed blocking WB inks. But i'd still be interested in if you can lay WB on top of DCUB.

We print HSA on DC UB, it's kind of the only way to fly with HSA as it doesn't add the cost of a second UB screen to the job. No WB on top of DC here.

You can, it physically works, but will have a hard time hitting color standard

i don't know why i don't just email you these questions. I just don't want to be cluttering up your inbox with dumb junk

Just toss it on the pile anytime. And there is no such thing as a "dumb junk" question.

I vote we keep it all out in the open.
If eric hadn't posted this I would never have known how/why willy puts plastisol
over Optimoon.
-
And I would have never heard the sweetest ink name ever- Virus Optimoon totally sounds like a decepticon or some kind of super bad sci fi character.

We print a ton of heavy metal / punk / hard core all that and discharge underbase with HSA on top is the way to go in our shop. Replacing plastisol and getting into sim process with it. So much easier to print this way and the clean up is a breeze. Permaset makes a "first down white" that is supposed to replace discharge underbase. However, we have three in house mixes for our discharge underbase so I don't see it replacing all three
