Title: Monkey See, Monkey Do effect
Post by: 3Deep on June 09, 2015, 02:44:10 PM
It's raining cats and dogs here so I'm taking a quick break, anyway way I've notice it a lot here where someone will buy something  and then everyone has to have it (I've done it too) then later find out it ain't what they thought it was or never really needed it to begin with.  Seems a lot like monkey see monkey do or keeping up with the Jones effect, don't know how many of you will admit to this LOL, but I've got caught  before and have a few things I never should have bought just because everyone was buying it.  The reason I posted this is I was reading a few old post and some new post and see where people are trashing some of the products that was hot to trot, and kind of glad I didn't fall for it ::).  Who's willing to admit they bought some stuff just because of the monkey see monkey do effect ;D

Who's willing to admit that they got involved in screenprinting because it was touted as easier than it is?!

If you don't go you will never know... some are more comfortable with gut instincts and act quickly and get ahead of the curve quickly, others are timid and like to watch others make mistakes and love to be the I told you so.

The way I see it is if you have hard earned cash to invest while weighing the pros and cons taking risks on unproven technology is very acceptable.

Count me in, I've bought a few things that turned out to be stinkers, or at the very least not near what they were being sold as.  I remember one of the first turds I bought, I believe it was made to be exactly like the Westar Numbering System but I remember it was not the Westar unit like I used to think.  I wish I could remember what brand that was, but what a huge piece of crap.  I think I bought it from Pocono or GSG, I could probably look through some of my old notebooks and find out, but it was pure junk.  If it wasn't dark ink on light garments, forget about it.  Man, I thought that thing was going to solve all our team sport problems...not quite.

Heat press, bought it because seems like everyone has one and uses it.  Ours was 2k and its been used 2 times in 1 year and both times not for anything customer related. Guess we didn't really need one and can't find a big use for it in my shop.

...and here I have 3 heat presses and have used all 3 today :D  I've probably done 15+ heat press jobs just this week.

If its under $50 and could save me some time I buy it. That said I have bought a $35 hose nozzle that come up on here and it was trash after 2 weeks. I have bought a loop that was mentioned on there that I have used once and will never use again.

Its all about trying new things and the lost cash on the crap items is easily paid for by the usefulness of the good items.

I bought a stretcher once that really should have been thought about more carefully. Never got one single screen stretched with it, but I wasted a ton of mesh... One other thing, a Hopkins press, but I'm sure I'll get a lot of folks who swear by them. I swore at it a lot, buy not by it...

I've had 3 heat presses, we heat press pretty much all day everyday, but the only one that seems to stand the test of time is a $150 no name brand. It ain't pretty but a work horse. Had a hottronix because. Because it was supposed to be the best, only got 2 years out of it.

I have bought some stupid stuff because the idea seemed cool but was always junk. Like express screen when I first started out!

Not following a seeming trend, just a regretful decision.

Not too shocking since most (all???) of your work is waterbase/discharge.

although I will say that I feel like we see better results with higher tension and the HSA inks... (no empirical evidence yet).

OMG - I can't count the THOUSANDS of dollars i have spent on what I thought was a good idea over the last 25 years - even after i did my own research. After a while, I get instinctive about stuff coming my way and "just pass".

Some stuff has REALLY worked out for the best. I gotta say that going filmless (DTG), LED exposure, having a tri-lock that finally works, and using frames that require no tape has increased my production by about 5000% (I'm stretching this number a little) . I'll pat myself on the back for that one but the decision was well thought out by an entire crew before I wrote the check (and it was a BIG check).

Lots of other stuff didn't work out as well........
