Hey!! We are getting really close to being ready to purchase our first automatic press. We have been a 1 and 2 manual shop for 3 years and are starting to reach the point where an auto would help us to reach the next profit level and reach production goals. If you had 15-20K for your first auto where would you start looking. Are the Brown Electra prints worth doing or would I be better off finding a used M&R or Workhorse? Ideally I would like an 8/10 but I know a 6/8 is more likely in my price range. Any help would be much appreciated. Most of our jobs are 2 color spot jobs. Very rarely do more than 4 colors. 90% of our business is schools although we are working on branching out more and more so that we don't have the slow down when school is out for summer. I already use 23 x 31 screens and my dryer is good enough for an auto so those are not concerns. Thanks Guys!!

P R I N T E X :) Thank you, thank you, I'm here all year :)
Hopefully someone will chime in and tell the OP I'm just joking...
Seriously though I'd find a used press, with more colors than you think you need. If you're going to do this, do it right the first time so you're not going through this same process a year from now.
-
I totally agree, buy a press with more colors then you think you might need. We bought a Diamondback 8/10 3 years ago but at times I wish we would have a 10/12 press.
-
I do not own an auto but have done lots of research and asked lots of people about their experiences with autos. For your budget:
-I would STRONGLY suggest going with a used M&R, either a guantlet, sportsman, or challenger. The support M&R offers for their older machines will be invaluable.
-Prioritize the most working heads/stations you can afford and the largest print area you can afford, and the newest press with the fewest impressions you can find. You should be able to get a late 90's/early 2000's 8/10 gauntlet in that range that is in good condition.
-Make sure you have a tech inspect the machine before purchasing as there are lots of things that can be wrong with a machine and what may look like a great deal on paper could cost you a lot in the end. Spend a few hundred now to save thousands later.
-Avoid equipment brokers unless you get multiple good referrals from people you trust (if you find a deal, post it here and people will tell you whether to avoid known bad sellers). There is a short list of straight up scammers that always seem to have "deals" and use multiple pseudonyms.
-try to find a machine that is in production and can be tested out before purchase. If a seller won't let a tech look at it or wont let you see it work, run away.
There are plenty of other pieces of advice I'm sure people will chime in with soon. I would avoid Anatol, Lawson, Brown, asdfx, and a few other brands for various reasons unless they are SERIOUSLY good deals. People have love/hate relationships with javelins, people like RPM, SRoque, and MHM, but their used presses just won't have the same support and part availability as an M&R.
-
one thing to think about when making the move to automation, the press is the EASIEST part. now you have to consider a ton of other variables. Your current dryer, can it handle the output of an automatic? screen size, do you need to bump that up, if so how is your exposure unit? can it handle a larger screen screen? and the list goes on...power, gas for your new dryer, footprint, workflow yada yada....
*edit. I see your dryer and screens are ok, what about power for air compressor, lines and all that. you'll blow through 20k in a heartbeat...
-
I agree with the earlier post about more colors. I went with a 6 color. I say all the time that my next press will be at least 10 colors. I would also STRONGLY suggest getting a certified tech to instal for you. If this is your first auto press you may not know if something is off or not right until it is too late.
-
Nothing less then 8 colors.
Your 15-20k budget is more like 10-15 for the press after you figure in the nickel and dime stuff like compressor, air dryer, flash, electrical, shipping, install, etc. Have a reputable tech install your press so it's done right from the start.
Watch out for the deal of the century, like above have a reputable tech inspect the machine.
There are some reputable used equip dealers/brokers, reach out for references before buying from one.
Check with mfg to see if parts are still available, some stuff can be purchased locally but items like PLC's and some custom parts may no longer be available.
See who is around your area to support the machine. If your on the East Coast and the only service available has to be flown in from the West Coast you will go broke if something major goes wrong.

I asked the same question of the TSB guys when I began searching for an auto. "Used Gauntlet Revolver" kept popping up over and ove, so that was what I started looking for.
Took me a while to find one, then one suddenly appeared in my back yard almost (7 miles) but it was a little older than what I was looking for. But I went ahead.
It is a 93 Gauntlet GT8. I was able to watch it print, and found out that most everything is still available parts wise. I hauled it pretty much intact on a sliding bed tow truck on a pallet jack for the ridiculously low price of $150.00. I wanted to be in the 10-12K range all in, and was able to do that. BUT! I am handy, so I was able to do all the piping, wiring and etc myself.
I found a terrific Craigslist Compressor (Refurbed Champion 5HP) and bought a Harbor Freight Chiller--jury is still out on that purchase.
My press is similar to the one hotlinked above in post #2...but older and not as clean. Same size and footprint. Older interface. (WAAAY last century interface)
You are gonna drop WAY more coin on the "OTHER STUFF" than you think.
I've got very few regrets! I wish a Tri-Loc type of pre registration system would be more usable. I'm going to rig something one of these days. For now, I register on press to a film. That would be a disastrous time suck for most guys, but I'm still a low volume shop. And I wanted a 7.5 HP compressor but my building is single phase and motors in that power range are more of a problem than 5's.
I'd heard that M&R had the best service and support. OH. MY. GOSH! I had no idea!
You might even get support from Rich Hoffman. They understand how to build customer loyalty. If I'm able to buy again, new OR used...I'd be hard pressed to look elsewhere.
You know old the saying, of the things we all want: Low Cost, Quality, and Support....you can only pick 2. That's really true. But if anybody wants a clinic on how to support their products, they need look no further than M&R. Service is my top priority when buying used.
And I agree...get somebody to look over your prospective purchase that KNOWS what they're doing.

I did the exact same thing and started with a 6 color, then bought a 10 and now there are several times, I wish I had a 14

Buy used. Get the biggest (most colors) you can afford. Browse http://www.digitsmith.com/f6.html (http://www.digitsmith.com/f6.html) and http://forums.mrprint.com/classifieds.php?do=main&catid=5 (http://forums.mrprint.com/classifieds.php?do=main&catid=5) . There are a lot of great deals out there. Our first auto was an ElectraPrint. It got the job done. We had it for almost 5 years before upgrading to a Sabre.
(My ElectraPrint is for sale on Digitsmith ;) if you're interested)

Do yourself a favor and look at Marcodie. You can get the press in any registration configuration you want (Tri Lock MHM or Pin). Very high end press at a Diamondback price. http://marcodieusa.com/ (http://marcodieusa.com/)

Do yourself an even bigger favor and pull a D&B on Marcodie. Besides the fact they have a judgement against them from M&R for close to 1M there are others owed big time. But hey if Sonny says it's the place to buy an auto must be o.k.
-
Uh oh
-
wish I knew how to insert that MJ eating popcorn gif....that fits right here.
being a newbie to automatics, you'll need support...why go with anything else but the best support possible? that's why we have 2 M&R auto's... learn from other's mistakes...get an M&R + get a tech = make money.
-
Support, support, support. I don't mean to beat the horse to death, but especially for your first time out, getting in with a company, even if used, that has not only tons of users willing to always help, but a support team and company owner that is always personally available is very, very important. There are so many things to consider besides just getting the press, that at least 60% of the people on this board could tell you. There are all sorts of brands out there, some great some ok, some really bad news. We started with M&R products, and continue to move forward with M&R products. Just my opinion, but as a smaller shop doing the work of a larger shop, knowing that there are local techs everywhere around us, and it's pretty much the same cross country for M&R, parts always on hand, tons of users on a forum just like this, awesome support TEAM, not just a couple dudes, and an owner that at the very least, even though he doesn't have to, will always make sure you are up and running. It's just something to consider. Machines are machines and things happen, so make sure what ever you do, you know that you chose a team that can keep that machine going for you. Just my experiences. ;D

Wow, just wow is all I can say. Let me first clarify mr. Hoffmans gross negligence in mentioning a lawsuit or any misgivings about Marcodie USA Inc. To my knowledge at this moment I have not nor has Marcodie USA Inc. Been sued or has been sued or has any dealings with M&r or mr. Hoffman (except for being a competitor in the same industry ) and to make a statement in effect claiming so is just plain false, wrong and possibly liable, especially on a public forum such as this.
To be very clear with anyone and everyone here, I purchased the assets of a failed Marcodie in Austria. Well over a year ago. I then chose to transfer all of the purchased assets to Texas and start my company here in Texas building high quality screen printing equipment at an affordable price. I chose to leave the name in place in order to support customers from the previous ownership/company. I did not have to , I wanted to because I thought and still believe it's the right thing to do. I could have easily been abc machines. I have been a screen printer my entire life since 16 years old and this was just an opportunity for me to put my .02 into what I think a printer should have on their press. Just my way of giving back to an industry that has keep me and my family fed and sheltered over the years. That's it, no mystery no bs just great presses at a reasonable price.
Mr. Hoffman, I have no bones to pick with you nor you should have with me short of the fact that we are competitors. I have the utmost respect for you and your company and there is no need for false statements or intentions to falsely lead people to a false conclusion about a company you know nothing about. If you have a problem with the original owners/company I suggest you take it up with them. That being said I will defend my reptutation and my companies without delay. To that end I would expect you to do the honorable thing and publicly issue an apology or correction of your statements that infer my company Marcodie USA Inc. being sued or having any obligation to you or anyone else for that matter.

No apologies here. Let me guess. This is not the same logo Marcodie uses in Austria? Dedi and Marco have nothing to do with this company what so ever ? The fingerprints I have on the disc that was inserted into M&R's computers to destroy the hard drives to cover up what was going on match no one that is associated with this company? Marcodie the company owned by Marco and Didi hence the name Marcodie has nothing to do with the company in Austin that uses the same registered company logo. Unlike Austria where your legal fees were covered by the government here in America legal is very expensive. Put some money in an account for Marcodie here and let's see if our judgement works differently on American soil.Oh and just for grins Sonny said you should look at Marcodie for some reason, not Marcodie USA. We have in house attorneys here so the shoe is on the other foot here. Have your people talk to my people. They are going to soon anyhow!!!!!

Mr. Hoffman as I stated before, I am not them. I am sorry you have a problem with me for some reason. I have none nothing to you or your company to warrant such an attack, short of being a new competitor in the same industry and even then I think it is unwarranted. In Austria I simply maintained a sales and support office. The name and logo I chose to keep in order to help and support those with an existing machine, I would assume you would do the same in my shoes for former customers. As far as Sonny posting he did provide a link clearly stating Marcodie USA and I am sure you've seen the banner ads for my company on this site, so I find it hard to believe you did not know to whom he was referring. I just don't see what all the bs is for. Companies compete all the time without this kind of drama. I can't speak for you but all I'm out to do is build quality presses for my current and future customers period. If someone chooses your brand over mine, or one of the others out there, ok I can deal with it. I'm not going to smear them in anyway, just means I have to work harder and improve for the next time I have an opportunity with a customer. Not sure why your attorneys would contact me, since I have none nothing to you or your company in any way, but it seems that's what you want to do. Can we not just agree to disagree and go about our ways?
For everyone else, I apologize to you for having to see this nonsense, it shouldn't happen but I simply felt I had to defend myself against baseless and flat out falsehoods about my company.
Once again for those of you that would like real information about Marcodie USA please feel free to contact us anytime.

I made the choice to go with a new Diamondback S, 6 colors. One of the factors for the size was my available floor space in the building I own. After 2 years I don't regret the purchase. When all was said and done the total (all equipment) purchase was north of $45,000. We also installed a IR rotary compressor/chiller that MORE than handles the job. When an electrical problem popped up with the press they were on it in a heartbeat. Like was mentioned, your dealing with machinery and problems will arise, no matter what color you own. How it's dealt with is another thing. I've found their service to be top notch.

Nice Looking 2005 Progressive/Rhino on Digitsmith!
Price now at 11K. Super low impression count.
I would jump on it. I have a customer here in So Cal that runs
two of them in a very large shop. Over 5 mill impressions on each with normal
part replacements, which they order from 2m.

I'm interested in the many recommendations for upgrading the size of auto. Aside from the obvious ability to print high detail simulated process jobs, what advantages do the big presses offer? Especially for a shop that runs mainly 1-2 colour jobs, as per the original post?

when we bought our 6 color Javelin we were mostly printing 1-2 color jobs, within 6 months, we had our first 6 color sim-process job come through (which on the javelin was ok due to the flashback), but on a different press would have either required us to run in revolver mode and put the flash in a off-load station, or run with less colors.
If you're buying a 'low cost' used press, 6c is probably ok, but we're running a 7 color job today on our 10c sportsman, and it would be nice to have even more extra heads.
It'll be a hard choice during our next upgrade if we get a 'small' 6c or a 12c or 14c... probably depends on which way we go with HSA inks here as HSA requires more flashing in some circumstances and it would be nice to have a few extra heads for that.
Personally we bought M&R for the service and for the fact that their factories are less than an hour away from our shop. If/when something happens, I'm confident we can be back up and running in the same day.
I also wouldn't buy a press from a vendor that their first answer to me would be that industry leaders are 'doing it wrong' and that I have to rig my new press to accomplish what I want (but I'll leave that story for a different day).
-
Oh pretty pretty please?

my take...
used is a great route. Late 90's all air gauntlets are great machines. Plenty of support and plenty of techs that can fix them. they are pretty cheap and they will print for a long time.

I'm spoiled, I'll stick with AC and servo. The first time I try to print at 30"/sec and can't do it with an air machine I'd be upset with myself.

Yall are running an RPM right? How're you liking it? Tried calling the folks over there last week and just got forwarded to a full voicemail notification.
-
Yeah, RPM Revolution. Not surprised to hear you got a voicemail and weren't even able to leave a message. I was hoping the new hire there could help Rick out but I'm not even sure he's still there. I've personally never had an issue getting a hold of Rick but I know a few that have. It's unfortunate because the machine is very strong, but there is so much more to being an automatic manufacturer than just building a great press.

For those of you that would like to know more about Marcodie USA Inc. feel free to contact us and we would be happy to talk shop with you about our products.
Thank you,
AJ Halford

why don't you tell them publicly as history has a tendency to repeat itself. It may help others from your experience.

if trying to help people from getting ripped off is a school yard pissing contest so be it. There is nothing wrong with that in my opinion and those that have lost their hard earned money this way will surely agree.

Also, this is a public forum. When someone says to send a private message it really defeats the purpose. If you have something to say please say to all of us, not just a select few.

It sad that this industry has so many companies/brokers/snakes that stuff like this seems to be normal.

i would be tentative about buying a press from a new manufacturer, at least new here in the states.....
and yes this industry is rife with crooks and thieves.....
