Cleaning the heads next. This press looked like a wookie with chipped up paint when I bought it four or five days ago.

I have a question....will this press bring in more business? Is it better than the R Jennings? I am not trying to sound rude, but aren't there better things to focus on than fixing up an old press?

Biz is slow I have 1 or 2 jobs to print a day but when I get too busy I'll have a second press to set up jobs on for the next day waiting for me, hire help when I need it and so on... Everything I fixed so far I came in over the weekend for, the print heads will take a few weeks maybe scrub em for an hour a day. It's all good. ;)
I'm gonna try to print the next 1000+ order myself with help rather than outsourcing like I've been doing.
+ It's kinda fun fixing things up :P Makes my shop look more professional than just the 1 manual.
Maybe later down the road sell it and put the money towards an auto.
-
Yeah, but would this time have been better served by selling more jobs? All I know is when I am only turning out a job or 2 per day, I hold on to what I can. You're a 1 man show, you don't need 2 presses. Even if you hire another employee, 1 person can prep jobs and screens while the other prints, or better yet, you sit your butt in a comfy chair while other people do your work.
You need a plan, rather than just add equipment in case you hire or so that your shop "looks" better.
GO TALK TO SAM.

I knew you was going to hang on to that line lol... it was sarcasm. Do we gotta disagree on everything? ;D

You want a 2nd manual press and hired help to turn out more work you can not make enough money on?......Using hired help on a manual press is just "pissing" profit away.....If you have enough work for hired help, get an auto press or 10 or 15 years from now you will see you spent 100s of thousands of dollars on wages that you would have saved had you bought an auto press early on....You are taking food out of your family's mouth....
-
Actually, I am making my shop look cooler right now as well. It's been put on hold since I can't get enough time to do it.
I agree with royster on the auto. You can find a good auto for around $8,000 for a 6 color. You will have more energy and more output with an auto.

There's 1/2 a dozen print shops here with multiple manuals with employees, can't be too bad of an idea. Beisdes being on the 3rd floor with no freight elevator there's no way an auto is getting up here. I'm not talking about hiring someone as an employee but rather pay help when I need it.

Trust me it's in the think tank... I'm always keeping an eye out locally for a good deal. When it's right I'll happen.
-
You should refurb that press and sell it.
-
Multiple manual presses???? Just because someone else does it, does not make it a good idea...
-
cough. . I have the auto you need. . cough. . .I'll even work out a payment plan. .
-
There you go. A payment plan from Homer. Trust me dude, an auto/manual combo is much smarter than a manual/manual combo.
Shawn, you should just stop asking questions altogether since you know everything. Your work in awesome, you need to be focused on selling that, not filling your shop with equipment that you might use if you hire an employee.
We are just trying to give you advice, and with everything you act like you know it all. I am not saying this to be a dick, but if you fail at shirt printing this time, maybe you will listen to somebody when they try and use their knowledge and experience to better your situation.
-
cough. . I have the auto you need. . cough. . .I'll even work out a payment plan. .
Thought you was holding on to that?
-
Same as Homer's offer here. If you'd rather drive to Cleveland, you are more than welcome here and I will NOT kick you in the NUTS!!!
pierre
-
sorry, meant same offer as Sam! I can't part with my press, but will gladly talk business with you . . .
pierre
-
haha I was gonna say , P - dude I want your press. . .Shawn, you would need a longer print length I think, mine is only 14" tall. . .if you want it, lets deal, I am still shopping for a 10 color though.

Wow you guys are a little hard on Endless. Endless I understand what your doing. I am the same way. When things are going bad you have to do something to get it going in the right direction. (Even if its just to put yourself in a better mood) Maybe buying the Workhorse is that for you.
Now for the guys that want you to buy a auto. Why would someone that does not have enough work for a manual even think of taking on the cost of an auto and the cost to have a auto set up. Trust me I know autos are great but the learning curve and costs in the beginning are enough to put a slow shop out of business. You guys have great advice I respect everyone’s of you but right now is not the time for Endless to get a auto.
-
Now is not the time to buy and refurbish a manual press either. Or even buy a manual press. It make zero sense for a 1 man show to own 2 manual presses that are so similar.
Homer, why does that press only have a 14" print stroke? It looked like in one of your old videos the image was starting really low.

endless needs an auto YESTERDAY. . . . .plus, going auto may give shawn the opportunity to make money at his whore prices. ;D . . hey, not enough work for 1 manual, why the hell have 2?!
plus. . .it's shawn. . .we HAVE to bust his chops....

As much as I'd love to take that press of your hands Screened Gear is right, I dont have that kind of bank, unless my college customer starts placing orders as big as last years.
-
Wow you guys are a little hard on Endless.
I wouldn't say hard is the right word. Maybe blunt and no pussy footin' around would be a better way to describe it. Tough love may even fit.
The amount of help here and offered in person is amazing and speaks volumes for how helpful this place and people are.
I applaud Endless for not having thin skin and the rest of the board for not piling on.

There is a lot of knowledge on this board.

I am a manual shop that just invested in a used auto to prepare for work to come. I have yet to fire it up and learn how to print on it but I will say depending on your market a manual only shop just does not make sense. My market is saturated with printers and if you want to compete on the large jobs with multiple bidders you have to find a way to get the job done in the fastest manner possible. We barely won a bid for 500 pieces blue shirt white ink 2 sides. I knew I was going up against auto shops and bid like I had an auto and got the job. We still made about $40 per hour profit but what could have that been with an auto? $200? $300? And I only won the bid by about $20.00!
So I think your market should be a big factor on whether you should go auto or not. Not only that you can get into a used auto as cheap as a new manual when you find the right deal.
-
Trying to decide which manual to keep once I get an auto. A bit premature since I haven't used the Workhorse yet but...
RJennings
rear clamp
6c / 4s
kind of a pain to register jobs but keep regi through any size job
will not hold M3 newmans with back clamping adapters
no tilt adjustment
spring tension adjustment for heavier screens
upgradable to 6 station
not side clamp compatable
rock solid
4 years old
price 6400.00 new
Workhorse Mach
rear clamp
6/6
easy to register (we'll see)
taller clamping
tilt adjustment
no spring tension adjustment (though more springs can be added)
upgradable to 8 colors
side clamps available
rock solid
guessing 10 years old
price 4850.00 new
-
Don't look at the price of them new as a pro/con. Jennings presses are good, but overpriced. The only way you are going to learn which to keep is to print on both and figure out which one you prefer.
But as has been said . . . a second manual :o

Yes, they are VERY overpriced but I understand why. He builds them as he sells them, been to his shop nothing compared to the Workhorse plant. Very small operation. Feels more like a mom and pop shop.
-
Oh, I agree. I printed on a Jennings my first 6 years.
-
A bit on having a second manual press around.
1. Manual, or auto, one can never have too many heads. Even if they are on different presses, they allow multiple set-ups which come in handy on jobs as simple as a four color back along with a three color front.
2. Add to that, the complications when a couple of shirts are found to be defective, and the job set-up must linger for another day while replacements are being sent.
4. Even an additional one color press can find use staying permanently set up with an oft-used label.
5. For shops doing sports, a press dedicated to numbers can be a blessing.
6. This all assumes that one has the space.
The other distant possibility here is that having the space, Shawn now discovers a whole new facet of the industry of buying and selling used equipment. There are bargains, and there are folks who need something now, or need something gone now. The man with space can take advantage.
Hell, he wouldn't be the first guy we knew on a forum to completely change his focus to dealing equipment!
And a note to Screened Gear;
Many of us knew Shawn back when...
we have earned a certain privileged familiarity in this respect, as we have shared all of his ups and downs since his humble beginnings.
Now, if only he'd study the available categories here, and sometimes make more appropriate choices as to where to post. Some of his posts in the Generalsection, can be a Major concern, as they belong in a more Private area. I am considering Corporal punishment, or at least busting his rank.

In all honestly I looked for the "pricing section for screen printing" didn't see it, but now I know.
Stupid or not, the second press WILL come in very handy like the reasons you just mentioned. I'm curious though what happend to #3?
My contract guy has 1 auto , 2 6 color manauls and a 1 color press and on any given day he has employees on all of them. People say I need a mentor, he's kinda of one them. We both started from home based businesses. Contract work is a huge part of his success and noted... when I get that auto.

Yea, when you call R. Jennings you get "R" answering the phone!
-
Shawn, I have no guff with you in buying the second press, I too am a one man show and have no less than five contraptions here capable of holding screens printing on some type of thing. BUT, here is something to think HARD about...
With the way the economy is, and the flood of used equipment now in its wake, there may NEVER be a better time to invest in an auto. Remember, you can always sell it down the road if its just not for you.
-

Yeah along with the history of the business and why his stuff is far better compared to other companies lol. He will say if not his press get an Antec.

Pondered an auto I found on ebay for 1500.00 , 8 color precision (not the oval) but besides the brand scaring me away it's in FL and I'm in NY and this sucker is HUGE. Its being sold by a guy that owns the space, I guess his tenant left it behind. I dont even want to know how much it would cost to freight it here much less crate everything. Just checked it's gone anyways...
-
...yeah, you dont want that, those are just too outdated for todays standards. A buddy of mine here picked one up thru an online auction for next to nothing, but the cost to get it running sounded like waaay more than its worth. Plus the resale on that is NADA, printers are hauling those away to the scrapyards nowadays.
...I dont wanna be just another board member here to give you advice unsolicited, but I will at least make a suggestion: start squirreling away whatever cash you can, and keep a close eye on the used market. Use your second press as much as you want, and when your savings get close to enough for an auto, sell the press you use the least, and put that toward an auto too.
...I would also heavily consider going after some contract/wholesale work in the meantime. I do a LOT of that, its easy money, man. Those folks are almost like your unsung sales staff, and they like having another go-to option out there when their other printers cant work in the rush jobs (AKA, every job they have).
-

3. Especially if another brand, It allows for even more questions posted on screen printing forums. ;D

I just saw a 2008 6 color MHM E-Type on the market today.. its in NY. Comes with the FPU for 36k or 730 a month leased. Wish I could get my hands on it.

yeah, but 6 colors is not enough. you may think it is -but man, I wish I had atleast 10 colors. flashes and cool downs kill me on a 6. They need to make a flash that goes in between the heads and flashes faster than the speed of the index. . then I can have a true 6 color machine. .

A little out of my price range...

Biggest press diameter we can fit at my boss's place is maybe 11'. So my first auto will more then likely have to be in the 6-7 color range. I'm hoping his other business grows large enough to occupy the whole building we're sharing with it now... then we can go search for a nicer place and maybe get at least an 8 color.
-
Shawn. On a typical work pattern - 5 days a week, that comes out to $4.56 / hour to own it. . .still out of your price range?. . .think about it.
-
36K is deff out of my range, yours is just right and I know the machine pretty well. If I bought yours or anyones I'd have to store it in a rental storage unit until I move into a bigger space and not on a 3rd floor like I am now.

he doesn't want to think about it....if he does he might succeed...and like I said before that is out of his comfort zone and he doesn't know what to feel of think....Shawn...I told you on Friday Night that I would take your call until 10pm...I even tried to call you but to no avail. I honestly think you are content in staying where you are. You have to get comfortable at being uncomfortable...that way you are always taking steps in the right direction...to read that you are getting a new "project" press and then in the same line saying you only are doing 1-2 jobs a week...WTF. sell sell sell...update your website, put together some marketing materials to do an email blast. do SOMETHING....
but from what I see you want to stay in the lifestyle are you are in now....but at least be honest with us and yourself if that is what you want...you talk about being successful and giving more to your wife and kids, but damn man alls i see is a lot of talk and no action....
-
Think I'll be selling my Jennings in a few months. Ebscreen sold me some side clamps for the workhorse. Slowly start selling off my manual newman frames and pick up some auto frames. I think this second press was a step in right direction, the wheels have been set in motion.
Socalfmf, you make things sound way worse then they are. I took your lead and email bombed my own 300 deal (300 whites 1 color 2.99 each) guess we'll see how that pans out.
-
I guess I don't know what the problem is -if there even is a problem. Shawn -what's the problem, no work? getting outbid all the time?
-

No work, out bid on the larger jobs, shitty city maybe, and shitty shop space? I'm out of breath just carring 4 cases of shirts up the 100 something stairs to my space.
Check it! Think I can get an auto up here much less 40 cases of shirts lol. Freight elevator hasn't been in service since the 70's .
3 sets of these bitches... good for the heart though.

I would like to know more about your suggestions on marketing materials and email blasts? I know to get my shop to where I can rely on the business to support my family I need to do alot of marketing and selling but trying to find ways to do that while working a day job 50 hours a week is a tough proposition. Any suggestions?

What funny is I was killing it on Myspace I had one of those message blasters I could blast thousands of people in less than an hour, almost seconds later I would have a heap of mail to go through . Myspace these days is a ghost town, facebook is cool but you cant reach out to as many people.
-
What does the location of your shop have to do with any thing?.....I am in Canada and sell all over Canada and the US.....
-

75% of my business is in Ohio, Mass and Pa the other 25% is local. I only have those customers from the Myspace blast and thier word of mouth they spread to others. My website does zilch, zero, nadda.
-
You missed my point.......Clients do not need to know where you are and/or come to you.....Just go out selling and farm your work out.....
-
shaun, really man why would you lease a spot 100 stairs up and tote shirts everyday?I dont understand that unless you are really set on remaining a studio type shop, and if thats your plan then great. I think you should find a first floor space, sell your JENNINGS and the WORKHORSE and take that money give it to jay as a down payment and go get that press. Brother its not everyday someone offers to privately finance a piece of equipment. autos run 24 pc. orders along with the big ones. there are several guys around who dont even have a manual in their shop. just my .02

Rents cheap , money talks... 340.00 a month 1200 sqft. includes all utillites , then again nothing comes without sacrifice which is my legs.
-
can`t see the pics can someone tell me what`s wrong :)
-
yeah shawn your rent is cheap but you are not using your building to advertise for you...again you are not saving anything if they do not know who you are or cant find you...
just saying
sam
-
Isn't there a thread floating around...There's a reason they are cheap?
-
can`t see the pics can someone tell me what`s wrong :)
This is what I have been seeing on Shawn's posts with pics attached.
I don't know what is wrong.
Is this what everyone sees?
Is it in other posts as well?
-
I can see my own pics even on different computers. Very strange :o
-
I have yet to see a pic, just the question mark in a box like Andy's screen shot.
-
Damn so no one can see my awesome job at refurbing the press? I'm actually very proud of myself lol. 8)
-
Yeah, don't see shizz. Must be some ghosts around these parts....

Interestingly, I just tried Firefox, and don't even see the "place saver box" like I do in Chrome.
Also, the little icon box does have a url address link that can be copied. http://s3.postimage.org/jon6cp61j/steps.jpg (http://s3.postimage.org/jon6cp61j/steps.jpg)
but I don't thionk is read as an image directly with the post image shortcut code. that gets me the little box like this (http://s3.postimage.org/jon6cp61j/steps.jpg)

I just quote your post and copy the link. Press looks awesome.

you can right click properties and cut and paist the link into your browser as well
-
and you can right click and, at least in Chrome, open in new tab, but that still doesn't tell us why Shawn's pics don't seem to work as attachments.

Shawn is this the view going down from your shop?

Yup 60 steps in all and NOT dolly friendly as the steps have a stupid lip to them. When I have a lot of boxes someone (me or my wife) is stationed at the 1/2 way point and brings them up the rest of the way.
-
can i ask what the f*ck were you thinking? you really think you are going to get a soccer mom to come up to your shop to place a large order? do you think you will get quality people who want to order 100+ shirts from you to carry them down the stairs....Man I think you really F*cked yourself with that location no matter if it was free....
Honestly Shawn when are you going to get a good business plan in place and work it? I am more than willing to help but man what are you thinking half the time?
sam
ps send me your business plan for review.....
-
Still haven't seen a pic of the press or a link to it - just the stairs.
Are you in the big red brick building?

It's very rare I have someone like that come to the shop to place the order they order by phone or email and I'll bring the shirts down and meet them at the the door. Kids in bands dont seem to mind, hell there's 3 recording studio's up here , 2 wood shops , another printer that prints gig posters , gym , karate dojo , a skate park beleive it or not... well a room with a gaint skate ramp in it and band rehersal spaces inbetween. It's a lively building and if you want to catch a contact buzz hang out in the hallway on a friday night lol. If it makes it any better I moved from the 4th to the 3rd.
-
no crap because you are making it that way...wtf...what woman would want to go there if they feel like they could be raped or mugged? I don't think many...that is why you have the clientle you have....again we are here to help but really man...no wonder you have no foot traffic...our biggest customer was a walk in guy who happend to be so pissed at his last printer that day over a stupid thing...he has been with us for 6 yrs now and places $1500-$2500 every 2-3 weeks for sports and fundraisers.....you honestly think he would have come up to your place? no, because it is hard to get to and sketchy....
Honestly Shawn it is time to grow and run a business....again where is the business plan? hmmmmmmm

60 stairs??? How the HE$$ did you get that work horse press up there. It weighs about 600 pounds. Just the base has to be 200. You have to spend more time getting shirts into you place then I do printing some of my orders. I feel for you. But then again my electric bill is almost as much as your rent. I still would not want 60 stairs. Its has to make you not want to do big orders. If I had to carry an order of 1000 shirts up to your place I would die.

Shawn = I am going to do a little research on your area. .. you are totally fking yourself. Location is HUGE. . .unless you are strictly online sales...and I don't believe you are?
I wouldn't walk to the third floor for a free lapdance. . holy smokes man...

Cleaning the heads next. This press looked like a wookie with chipped up paint when I bought it four or five days ago.

You would be amazed at all the heavy stuff I have up here. The worst was that 500 pound paper cutter. Dryers and presses came up here in peices. The Workhorse was going to get torn apart for refurb anyhow. 600 piece order coming Friday.

Does your courier bring stuff up stairs?....

Courier wont deliver to the building they throw up a UPS note on the door, I have it sent to my house or wait outside for them to show up.

That'll be 8 or 9 cases up 60 stairs before you even start the job? I can't even begin to imagine that. Sounds like some kind of training in an old Van Damme flick or maybe Karate Kid. Cases up - cases down, cases up - cases down. I applaud your determination.

I have entertained the idea of back to being homebased , the wife wants me to but that just opens up all kinds of issues... nagging female and 3 kids going nuts. I have also thought about packing up and moving back to my home state NC (Havelock,Newbern,Cherry Point area) and set up shop there, start over again on a clean slate.

What will be different in NC?

mild winters for one , fewer printers , military base, beach

May I ask what kind of custy are you after?

Paying ones, it was fun doing the band circuit for awhile but it's getting old. Would like to get more colleges.

I'd go down to NC. I was at my buds place on Lake Norman a few months ago, beautiful down there... and a hell of a lot cheaper then where I am now. Anything in the NYC area is absurd, hard to be a printer around here and compete on a national basis with people down south since their overhead is so much lower. Local market aint to bad though... people will pay for convenience at least, my goal is to make my way into the contract/wholesale market though... so relocation might be necessary.

Shawn, I sound like a broken record. GO TALK TO SAM!!! Here is somebody offering you FREE advice and you ignore it. You wonder why things aren't improving and you don't go out and make them better.
I agree, first off I would not hike up 2 flights of stairs, secondly, I wouldn't feel comfortable in that building. So you are alienating a huge sector of the public. Maybe the OWS crowd would feel fine there, it sounds like showers and being an contributor to society is optional.

I think I'm through with this thread. When I get all the heads cleaned and the side clamps on I'll post a pic. Putting it to good use this weekend on that 600 order, I have a friend printing on the Jennings I'll be printing the Workhorse while the wife works the dryer. My 600 piece (this is the one I won the bid on) turned into a front and back , charged a buck extra for the backs , extra 600 bucks cha ching! Goal is to knock this out in one day. The extra press paid for easily in one job.
I appresh all the help, I need a kick in the nards once in awhile... I'm looking for a new space. Now here's a topic store front VS warehouse space.

I would have that done in 2 hours on an auto with 2 other people.
Congrats on the order, now sell some more and get an auto....and go see sam.
-
Shawn do you offer Zorrel shirts?......Right now In Canada they are over 1.00 less than Gildan 2000s (S-XL) and over 2.00 less for 2XL..They ship from Kansas City and freight is free over U$@225.00....

Yeah but im in no rush ... what else do I have to print? It'll more like hangin out with a buddy listening to good tunes and printin' tees. Time will fly by.
-
If I had your prices down here, I wouldn't be able to turn the work out fast enough. I just couldn't survive long on them.
-
Are they crappy?
I sell way more Zorrel than anything else because I can place the order, they print it and ship it direct to my client....I get the odd complaint but no more than any other brand....
But I just looked at the U$ price for Gildan 2000s and it looks like the difference might not be as much down your way.....

I like the control of being able to control what comes out of my shop , even when I sub out jobs to a buddies shop I'm there helping out and sort of making sure everything is going smoothly. Hell I'm alittle nervous about having a buddy help me this weekend even though he used to own a printing biz himself.

There are maybe 20 very large contract shops in the USA......They turn out millions of garments a year, mostly without their clients standing over their shoulders to make sure they get it right....I outsource 100s of orders a year and do not need to be a "control freak" and have very few problems.....
Now I was not really thinking of you outsourcing to Zorrel but rather that it might give you a less expensive shirt option to offer....

I hear you... I just like to know I bought all this screen printing crap, paying shop rent and losing my mind for something lol.

Nice size order. I got a week to do 1100 shirts from home. Contract though. One side white print on navy.

Nice! Discharge white those and I'll be a 1 hit no flash job.

That'd be golden, but they're 50/50 and my dryer is too small. We're growing though. I'll have that Interchange MD-8 Dryer in no time and print discharge all day lol.

A week to do a job that is worth 500.00 or 600.00?.....
-
Charging them 1.75 a shirt. Invoice is a little over $1900. I'm home based at the moment. I'd bring it to my boss's shop but I don't want to bug him with it. When I quoted it I estimated 20 hours. I meant I have a week to do it. I'm sure I'll finish it in a few days. I print a lot between both jobs and my hands are shot so I try to pace myself. I'm saving every dime I have for an auto. This is the largest job I've had so far. Been a decent month actually. The client found me on google, guess the places page worked out after all.
