Title: Any Musicians Or Drummers Out There?
Post by: UltraSeps on March 30, 2016, 05:13:00 PM
I've been playing bass guitar and some guitar mostly although have decided to get back to drumming after a 15 year hiatus.  Played for 35 years as a child of 5 till about 40 years old then quit for no apparent reason.  Anyhow, decided to jump back in and picked these up.  Been playing now for about a week or so and surprisingly, some of my percussion skills are coming back, albeit at a slower rate of play.  I must admit, its fun again.  Although the wife and dog aren't too amused.8)  Still need to replace the stock heads as they're somewhat abysmal.

My eventual goal is to put together an inexpensive recording setup and lay down guitar, bass and drum tracks.

Its not that hard.  Just learn about 7 or 8 chords and you can play rhythm guitar to just about any Tom Petty tune.  :)

I hear you on that one.  Printing for bands and clubs is how I started in screen printing back in 1977.  Did the shirts for just about every big club and band on the Jersey Shore.  My best client was the Stone Pony in Asbury Park.  At least 2,000 t-shirts monthly along with 200+ of those baseball style nylon satin jackets which were so popular back then.

Yes sir...International Coatings 900 series.  In the earlier days that wasn't available yet and used NazDar DA air dry nylon ink.  It was 1 part catalyst to 4 parts ink with a pot life of about 60 minutes.  Had to hang dry the jackets all over the place.  Made cords that ran across the ceilings and could hang dry about 100 jackets.

I sold so many of those, had difficulty buying them.  Everyone wanted black with black and white trim.  The most reliable supplier was a company named WestWind-Buccaneer although they used some gold in their trim and was higher in price.  If I couldn't find jackets made by a company named Birdie I was usually out of luck.  Eventually worked out a deal with Birdie and placed orders of about 300 units every month and maintained stock of at least 200 jackets over and above what I needed.  It wasn't just the Stone Pony but all the bands and some other clubs used that same jacket.

Those were the days................

Drums, Piano and guitar here.  Before I got into screen printing I was the owner of Immix Eleven amplifiers.  Not a good time to be a musical equipment manufacturer.

LOL! I've been a guitar player since '65. I play electric and finger style acoustic, have 16 guitars and a serious case of G.A.S. for a 335... a stack of amps too! My advice is, learn to play to have fun, and if you need more than the simple strumming, then the world is your oyster, there is so much more instruction available today than there was when I was a kid, though I admit I was fortunate enough to have a really good teacher who taught me theory and how to read, which allowed me to educate myself further after that. Don't take that as "you must learn to read music" Ray Charles couldn't, and neither can Stevie Wonder... however, when you speak a language, reading and writing it is not a bad thing, and easier to learn than you might think. I used to tell my students just work on the reading for 5 minutes a day, and it will fall into place through repetition. That being said, one of my favorites, Tommy Emmanuel, who is as scary as it gets, can't read, though he does understand theory very well. Just Do It!

sitting next to my Fender Twin  (silverface), i have a nice Kustom  k250-4,  complete with matching cab, footswitch, boost pedal and everything is covered with the original dust covers - the tuck and roll is nearly perfect.  i think its from around the early 70s...   too bad i dont have a place to play.

????????

Anyhow, was playing for several hours today and I must say, its not only fun again but also a bit of a workout.  I take advantage of the times both the wife and dog have left the building. ;D  Not too bad although I'm not quite up to Neil Peart (Rush Drummer) status yet. LOL!

Looking into a set of electronic drums now to add to the music area (the unfinished part) of the basement.  Most likely a halfway decent set of Roland's.  Taking a drive to Guitar Center to try out a few.  These will eliminate excessive recording gear as miking the drums appears to be quite a project.

Color Separation skills not required! 8)  Great to see we have some musicians here.

I work in screen printing to play music. I have a sweet 68 Les (used on one of our show shirts!), Fender Twin, and so many other toys.  Like a 72 Fender Squier from Korea I picked up at Goodwill for 22 bucks with Seymour Duncans and push pull pick up selector, real heavy for a Fender, thicker wood! I have been fortunate to have 4 great band mates for the last 33 years!  We started as a rec league basketball team and played after games.  Two chord stuff, exploring leads etc.  Jamming with other musicians is key to learning new stuff.  If we hear a song going into the studio it is so easy with today's technology to learn it quickly.  I pad with internet connect, download from I tunes play, while playing over PA to study parts, download lyrics and TAB to a lyric program that scrolls auto and give it go.  Music is math, the relationships between notes in Blues or rock are pretty standard.

Anyone have a good amp for sale?  My lead guitarists Fender just went down.  Looking for solid state 60-100w twin 12" combo style, or head with cab, he abuses tube amps moving them to gigs, but he would consider tubes. Mesa, any Bogner? or Hughes Kettner? (sp)

If any of you come to the ISS long beach show we play Thursdays before show and Mondays after show at our studio.  Johnny Shell is a regular at these jams. Hit me up if you want to jam on either of these nights.  Space is limited so first come first serve.  All classic rock covers, about 300-400 to chose from.  I'd like to set up in a bar in Long Beach, we've done this at Gladstones, and let guests sit in on songs they would like to play.  So many musicians in this industry.

Highly recommend QSC power amps for PA.  With a good board the head room and power of these amps is incredible.

Honest boss, I'm working, answering questions on the TSB, some good leads here!

craigslist is the best for used amps. Espcially if you are willing to find the oddball amps. Are you guys in California? If so try looking for Risson amps. His amps are really awesome, and weird. Bob Rissi used to build amps for rickenbacker (which also make some really awesome amps...check out a TR100, or TR75) when they built amps. He is a computer programmer, who just fell into amp making. You can always find his combos in the LA/San Diego/Bakersfield area for $100-$400.

What do you call the half wit that hangs around musicians?

My first set was a Pearl Export series my pops bought off the back of a truck of a Jethro Tull cover band
that was calling it quits.

If you like QSC, have your guitar player check out the Quilter (the Q in QSC) MicroPro 200. I have one, it's friggin' great, you would never believe it's solid state. And, I have a '64 Deluxe, a '62 Ampeg, had killer late '60's Marshall 100W Plexi Stack, and a couple of Bedrock boutiques, a 25 1/12 and a 50 2/12, and was a terrible tube snob. He really should check one out...

I taught Instrumental Music in the Government Skrewels for 15 years.

I'm a trombonist, but I can get along on several other brasses if in a pinch. (I'd be your last choice for a French Horn player.   :o  )

As a band teacher, I was 30 before I found out that DUMB DRUMMERS wasn't one word.

(Little band teacher's joke right there...)
     (I know, not funny)

Seriously, I discovered decades ago that set drummers (aka "kit" drummers) are WAAAAAY too important to make sport of. They are the heartbeat of most bands. Without them you are gonna wander over the place. Reading music is a plus, but not as big of a plus as PRACTICING and listening.

I direct a church orchestra every week and I'm losing a fine, fine drummer soon. I think he's chosen The University of Kansas. He reads very well, plays Marimba, and is an absolute MONSTER snare drummer and the Captain of his crew on the football field. And he's learning flute, sortof.

Making music with your friends, has a way of getting its hooks DEEEP into your soul.

I didn't know Tommy Emmanuel couldn't read. But guitar is such a HUGE instrument and there are so many different ways to approach it. You can learn 4 chords and actuallyl enjoy it--or take it to the absolute limits of virtuosity. And I mean that in the most reverent terms possible.

I'm not one bit surprised how many of us on this board are musicians of one stripe or the other. It has been a life long passion for so many....

I also learned the importance of a good drummer/bass player connection as the solid foundation to a good sound. Playing a funk rhythm part with those guys for a fine instrumentalist is also zen-like, just fall into the groove...

I've only been playing guitar for 50 years (no, not a typo) and there is still way
too much to learn. My favorite rig was a '64 Telecaster with overwound pickups,
Blackface Bassman with a Fender model 16 Leslie. Best sound I've ever got.

I loved the blackface Bassmans too, great amps... Also 50 years, and I'll never be as good as I'd like if I live to be 90, but that doesn't keep me from playing every day... as long as we keep after it, we'll be fine...
