Title: What to make of this?
Post by: farmboygraphics on May 09, 2016, 08:46:30 AM
Stopped at a chicken BBQ Saturday before the Derby and was given this shirt. This rose, which is only an inch in size popped right out at me. It's the only red on the whole front of the shirt. I really can't tell what happened here. My first impression was that someone just didn't give a damn as these were promotional tees (printed for OTB). Thoughts...

umm, that looks like a deliberate gell overprint (slight black tint to a clear ink).  Why, I dunno, the shadow looks off to me....

What is the logo supposed to look like?

I was thinking a non-opaque red printed over the black could cause that effect, especially if the red overprint wasn't in register and was a slightly different size.

99% of people would likely never notice that... so it may have made the job run a lot faster to not have to deal with registration.

Hard to say unless you saw what the original art look like, I did this on some art last week I wanted the red to be darker so I only underdase so much and let the rest print direct to the shirt.  Now that also looks like they might have choked the underbase back to much.....

I think it looks cool.  It looks like a shadow in the rose.

Looks deliberate to me, the two reds are not equal in size or off set equally on the same side.
It doesn't look like a out of register print.

Looks like somebody printed this shirt out of order. The red should have gone down before the black (the artist put a few pixels of trap on the black, plus it's out of register).  Just what I think happened.

Looking at it closer...Maxie is right, the shading is off different amounts in different directions.  It's not an overcut, I think it's deliberate.

Looking it it closer again I still say it was done on purpose

Looks like red printed on top of a super thick black print (thus the gloss on the black) and not registered properly with a trap.  The shading is consistently up and to the right through the whole print.  The only reason it might not look like it at first glance is because of how many different angles and curves are in the shape, but if you brought it into photoshop, selected the bright red and created a new layer, then shifted it up and to the right it would line up perfectly with the mis-registered trap.  As others have mentioned, print order was wrong, and that trap is also huge...
