Title: what do you drive?
Post by: Homer on June 03, 2016, 10:15:33 AM
I'm in the market for a pick up. Been driving a jeep for 10+ years and I'm ready to move on. What's everyone driving?

Not a pickup kinda guy, but most of my friends seem to like the Ford F150 and up...

I'm a Toyota guy all the way.  I will eventually be upgrading to a pickup, probably a Tundra.

Of course, if you like Jeeps at all, you could have your cake and eat it too! (http://www.2016releasedate2017.com/2016-jeep-gladiator-price-truck-release-date/)

Also, you would probably find the build quality much better under FCA

Actually, this is the link I meant to put up (http://www.roadandtrack.com/new-cars/future-cars/news/a29009/2017-jeep-wrangler-pickup-info/)

2003 Toyota Tacoma with the longer bed. Feels a little small every once in awhile, but more than worth it for the gas mileage and absolutely easy to drive and park anywhere. My stepdad has a newer Tundra and parking that thing is a pain in the ass.

Also, they really hold their value well. People offer to buy it from me weekly...

Just replaced my 2006 Silverado with a 2016 GMC.  I like the new truck, I'm just not sure if it will be as reliable as the 2006 because of all the electronics.  It's basically a rolling computer.

First truck was an '86 Hilux. Literally Marty McFly. Still have it.

'14 Tacoma is nowadays. 10 million terrorists can't be wrong.

I have a 2008,  bought it with 0 miles on it, as of today I have 36k miles on it. Gas consumption is not an issue, I live a little over a mile from my shop. Think I want a Silverado but the Dodge Rebel looks interesting. I'm not a brand guy, I want the best bang for my buck...maybe one of those monster trucks from the Diesel Brothers. My FIL has a Tundra, it's not the best looking truck on the road

well i do not drive it but my dad does and that is the avalanche chevy.   I hate the body style but he was rear ended by a tacoma truck going 40mph  and the tacoma was totaled,  but the avalanche had very little damage.

Oh yeah, to answer the subject question.
2008 Mazda MX-5 Miata
2015 Subaru Forester (the box hauler when needed)

My old BMW R100S Airhead less and less as I get older, but one does not "drive" a bike, but rather "rides".

I drive a corvette, but my fishing truck now which I've been driving since 1990 brandnew back then, is a F150, the F150 now days are really nice looking trucks wouldn't dare take it in the woods or off road like I do my old F150 now.

My wife wants me to get something kid friendly as well, but there is no way I'm selling the tacoma until it costs more to dix it than to buy another one. I just love it too much.

Our other car is a 2008 Honda CRV which is pretty much the best "car" I've ever owned. Fits a shocking amount of stuff and super kid friendly. Great gas milage, safe, etc. I'm not sure what we would get next honestly. I know some people like the hybrid styles like the Avalanche, but I can't stand them. It's like having half a truck and half an suv without the real benefit of either. Just my opinion of course.

Had a '07 Silverado LTZ with the VortexMAX 6.0 engine. Friggin' loved that truck, I drove it till one of the cylinders died. I am not Mr. car repair so I had to sell it off and get a new one. Bet the kid that bought it knew exactly how to fix it and now he has a workhorse. The new truck I bought is supposed to be nicer just with a smaller engine. There are a 3 things that they have had to address and repair in the 1 year I have had it which sucks.

A 2005 Ford Ranger. Great gas mileage, comfortable, 96,000+ miles and all I've ever done is one set of tires, one battery, coolant change, transmission oil change, and oil changes. I regret getting the stick shift, though. Gettin' lazy in my golden years.
Other rides are an '86 Sportster with 97,000+ miles and on '09 LowRider I picked up on the cheap from a lady rider last year - had only 2500 miles on it.

i know i might get laughed at but - i drive a 2005 Toyota Prius.

before the prius i had a 1998 jeep cherokee classic, and before that it was a 1990 jeep cherokee laredo.  after driving those into the ground (not difficult with jeeps) i needed something that got better gas milage, and was more reliable.

i love jeeps, but living up in New Hampshire - the salt they put on the roads kills them.  ever have a gas tank strap rust through?

i sold the 1990 to a friend that drove it till the door rusted off.
i sold the 1998 to my brother in law - he wanted the axles for his jeep.

now i get about 45mpg and have zero issues at 132,000 miles (i bought it used).

more of a four door sedan kind of guy. Like the V8s or turbos so even if they are heavy there is a lot of giddy up an go. Have a nice BMW bike too that's been sitting for a while. Finally got it registered and insured aging for this season. So two out of three stooges ride the bimmers (no, not the Dave kind!).

Love my 2004 & 2011 Yukon's.
They are called trucks.

Thinking of making a decal for both that says, "My other car is a Yukon"

My wife has a spotless 1995 Grand Am that only has 60K miles.
At 15K miles the brakes were squeaking and shop said - you don't drive it enough!  ::)
Time for a new car honey, oh yeah, she drives the, "My She's Yar mobile", new Yukon.

This old gal.  2012 with 63K.  Lifted, locked, armored, snorked.  Gonna repaint the bumper after I sandblast it within the next few weeks.  It's ugly but with lockers it will go just about anywhere in the world that any vehicle could go.  The wife gets the new vehicles every few years.  Hopefully this FJ will be my 1st vehicle that I ever keep long enough to pay off, and I think I have about 6 months left.  Never not had a car payment since I was 18 years old.  Wife drives ( I get to drive it a lot too) a 2016 Lexus GX460.

My rides in order from most recent:
2012 FJ Cruiser 4x4
2006 Lexus LX470 4x4
2008 Toyota Tundra TRD 4x4, still can't believe I traded that one in but the LX was sweet and I kind of wish I still had it.
2002 Toyota Tacoma 4x4
1993 Toyota Landcruiser, parents still have this one and it has been resto-stored with some upgrades, worth more now than when it was brand new
1999 Dodge 1500 4x4 with a 12" lift and 38" tires, 360 engine with the greatest exhaust system I've ever heard on a truck to this day.  It was awesome, probably my favorite ride of all of them and the girls loved driving it so that didn't hurt while I was in college.  It lead to more than a few relationships with nice young ladies.
1998 Toyota Tacoma ext cab 4x4
1992 GMC Stepside w/ the bulletproof 350 engine that I put 250K miles on this truck and as of a few years ago was still seen, occasionally, on the roads in my hometown.  Last I heard it had over 350K on the odo but that's secondhand info.
1989 Chevy S-10, my 1st ride and it did a hell of a job getting me around in high school.  It was a bit rough once I got it handed down to me but I made it a very respectable truck.  I had the baddest system in it of all the high schoolers with 4 12" Rockford subwoofers in a custom box, 2 JBL 150 amps and bunch of other goodies that made it as clean and crisp as it was loud.

Grandpa van, room for 7, 3 different DVD players each with their own blue tooth channel for the headsets and Blue Ray players with 6 USB charging ports in addition to the 4-12V power ports.

We can watch Disney Princess's and play Mine Craft while grandpa and grandma listen to Jimmy Buffet, en-route to soccer, football, baseball, dance, etc.

With 50,000 miles of driving a year I wind up pushing either a 2006 Suzuki Aerio, great little car, or a 1997 Ford Ranger to the nearest mechanic, both have 300k and normally run on a sunny warm day.  Rainy days are iffy.   Who needs cars when there are so many guitars to buy?  Living in LA I find the lowest mile vehicle for 5-6k and drive them til they drop.  My 97 Saturn hit 500k and could get 40mpg tailgating Semis from Phoenix.  Wish they still made Ford Rangers or sold the Toyota Hilux here.  They are everywhere in Central America. A truck should be able to take a load of junk to the dump, most nowadays have more bling than my daddy's caddy.

John, have you ever done an Iron Butt Ride? My oldest son and I did their Saddlesore 1000 (in 24 hours) with me and Sir Winston the Cocker Spaniel on my 80 Goldwing and he on his Nighthawk 650 once upon a time.

1000 miles in 24 hours is only their initiation ride. They also have a 1500 in 36, and 1500 in 24 (!!!!!!!!) and a coast to coast in 50 hours ride. A 1500 in 24 requires a HUGE BLADDER, a big tank, a hard core committment and a superslab with lazy Constables. Every 2 years they have a rally where they do 1000 a day for 11 or so days. Several riders have achieved 49 states in that 11 day rally.

Winston, now expired (RIP) slept the sleep of the dead the night after our Saddlesore 1000. That's one heckuva lot of cocker spaniel ear flapping for one 24 hour stretch. I had built him a "cross seat" platform to sit on the passenger perch with each end of His Royal Highness affixed to a chain. Plenty safe and nicely upholstered for doggie comfort. The only possible exit onto 70 MPH asphalt would have to have been in a crash. He rarely sat down in that thousand miles. Too hard to bark at semis when sitting, I reckon. (Roll eyes)

My list,
04 Forrester pushing 300k
98 Buick Century Grandma Car, complete with Missus in tow, a bonafide Grandma, so as to not break the rules...
97 Dodge Ram 1500 pushing 280k
80 Goldwing with 116 thou, mostly with me on the saddle.

And Looking for a newer Forrester with less than 300,000 on the clock. Like em. Lots....

Currently a 2001 3/4 ton Yukon XL with an 8.1
Before that I drove an Expedition, which I still have with 300K miles.
I had a Lexus LS430, it was a super car until a truck rear ended me and totaled it.
Also had a LS400 and a bunch of great old volvos, except the twin turbo 1999 S80 it was fun to drive but stayed in the shop more than the garage.
My first car was a '71 Mach 1 Mustang, I still have it.

Yeah they loved me for awhile. Especially in my 20s. I'd have to admit a lot of them I didn't have long enough to register them or didn't want to pay the fees so I drove em until they got impounded, wrecked or stolen, but that was my teenage years lol. I went thru a lot of cars in my teenage years because they were bought with "dirty" money. And what is bought with "dirty" money just doesn't last.

Back in 08 or so I test drove both the (used) Silverado and the F150. My impression is that the F150 felt more truck like and the Silverado was more plush and car like. They were really that different feeling. I wanted my truck to feel like a truck so I went the F150. I don't think you can go wrong with either it's just what you want your truck to feel like. That was in 08 so I'm sure things have changed but F150 would still be my first choice. Also for consideration if I drove a lot I would seriously consider the Ram 1500 with small Diesel engine. Gobs of torque and excellent fuel economy.

2010 Dodge Avenger, wrapped for work.
Summer fun --> Kawasaki Vulcan and a 1970 Dune Buggy, bike or buggy depends on if I need to pick up anything on the way home from work.
As much as I'd like, I just can't justify the cost of a truck

I drive a 2015 Audi A3 limo.
It's one of my dream cars and hopefully will keep it for many years, at least until I can afford a BMW series 4.

Will probably be the only one here driving an Audi

Not at all! One sees plenty on the road here, and one is even driven by your very own Blue Moon Pierre.

and 244 that I know of (A6 for me and an S6 for Rich). There is somebody else I talked to, from the board, who has one, but I can't remember who. . .

Here's what I've got right now:

1962 MG Midget (parked in the shop while the basement/garage is being remodeled.
1991 Chevy G20 Sport van...I keep it around for hauling construction material and anything the minivan won't haul...4x8 sheets of plywood fit inside easily.
2010 Camry, my daily driver.  Its my 3rd camry, they are just great cars
2012 Sienna, my wife's car.  I still enjoy driving it though.

why...?

I'm about to turn 33 and I've had 4 cars, 1 was totaled (not my fault), and one was stolen and never recovered (again, not my fault).  The other two were a plymouth breeze (free, hand me down and a freaking terrible car), and my tacoma.  I guess I try to take care of them and drive them until they die (or get stolen, lol).

a friend of mine spent $1,000,000.00 or so on the cars over the last 10 years. Catch is, that's just the money he lost in depreciation! That's $100K per year in lost value! I used to swap cars with him when they were $100K-$200K, now that he is in $500K or so range, he won't let me drive them any more (and not sure I would, scratch on a carbon fiber bumper is $20K).

That buddy of mine has a billion dollar a year business. Buying cars is nothing. One of his most fun stories was he bought a car once and 90 minutes later traded it in at a different dealer. Didn't like the seats. Another was when he had the first new Rolls Royce with a piano black dash in it, some super rare configuration which they were going only make a few of. He gets the car home and a week later the dealer calls offering him 50k over what he paid for it. He declined saying he liked it and wanted to keep it for awhile. This goes on for a few days back and forth until a final offer came in from the dealer saying that they were making a final offer and he needs to take it if he knows whats good for him. He laughed and they offered 150k over what he paid. He said fine ill take it id be stupid not to. The dealer was 3hrs away but had already sent transport truck for it and it showed up 15 minutes after the phone call ended. Suitcases of cash exchanged (this was a north of 400k car before the 150k bump). Car gets loaded up. 4hrs later the dealer send him a video of the car being loaded in a military style plane which flew in just to get the car. Turns out it was a some really powerful Russian guy and he told the dealer he was either buying the car or he'd come take it one way or another. Apparently he gets his way.

He will buy these cars, have windows tinted, paint film installed, fully cut/buffed, often changing wheels/tires/exhaust and keep them often just a few weeks. Rarely does he keep a car more than 6 months. He loses money often but at times he's made money as well as he often will buy rare configurations of cars. His house has a 10 car garage plus a 2 car wash bay garage. Previous house was 18 car, he's slowed down last 2 years.

When I was 17 I bought a Kawasaki KDX 200 trail bike, not street legal, it had a speedo/odo on it and I put 35K on that bike before I smashed the speedo up and never got it fixed.  I figure I put AT LEAST another 15K on that bike.  Even though we all had drivers licenses many of my friends and I still rode our dirt bikes and four wheelers to and from events and each others' houses.  Living 10 miles from the nearest town has its advantages.  We had trails on the sides of the roads but drove on the roads when we felt like it.  It was just more fun to drive off road.  I figure with all of the farm-to-market, oil top backroads and the one highway that went through the area there was about 200 miles of trails if you count the one lane, oil top roads as trails.  We were never pulled over or bothered by the police/sheriff in the county, but the majority of the time we passed them we were on the trail beside the roads.

I was essentially a free-range kid in that I had transportation in a four-wheeler or dirt bike since I was about 12 years old and I could drive as far as about 10 miles, one way, to friends houses or wherever I wanted from about the 6th grade.  It was a different time, and everyone within about 20 square miles knew who I was and who my father was and nobody was going to bother us.  We were very respectful and didn't ride on people's property and only had trails made on public land.  We never made anyone mad or bothered others and we tried hard not to pollute with noise as best we could.  I couldn't imagine 12-14 year-old kids having that type of freedom to go where they pleased these days but hopefully there are areas around the country that it still happens.  But we were good kids and our parents made sure we acted right and respected all our neighbors.  I could see how what we got away with not being tolerated if the kids are awful and do things to upset others.  I think that was a huge part of what we were able to do for so many years.  I'm not sure that most of what we did was legal, and riding on the roads certainly was not but I'd guess that about 10% or less of the miles between stops and destinations was ridden on the roads.  There are hundreds of miles of one-lane oil top roads in the county I grew up in and it was literally like the Dukes of Hazzard except they were paved and not all dirt.  They intertwined and provided shortcuts between farm-to-market roads and the highways and if you knew which oil top to take you could get places in 1/4 of the time than if you took gravel/paved roads.  They were one lane, but two cars could pass each other in most places without pulling over, but you had to be careful.  Many side mirrors were knocked off over they years on those old roads.

When I was a kid in the early '60's, even in the Hollywood Hills they cut us some slack with trail bikes and minibikes. I'll always remember the second day I got my mini-bike running, a visit from the cops who just asked my dad and me to add a muffler on the two stroke kart engine we used (Power Products AH58 though most favored the West Bends and McCullogh) His heating and Air conditioning place had a line on Tecumseh products (their 4 stroke line), so, the Power Products it was.
And, there were even dirt areas back then. One, a huge housing development called Mount Olympus (renamed Mole Knoll by us) took many years to excavate, providing some serious riding areas, better suiting the 250's most of us stepped up to.
DLAC will probably chime in as he was the dirt biker supreme in his neck of the woods.

Speaking of dirt bikes I had a juiced up YZ 125 Yamaha, back then they were yellow, I was the only black kid in my neighborhood that own or even rode a dirt bike.  I thought I was the black Hurricane Bob Hannah, we'd ride in the pit what was a local excavating site for a local construction site.  After a good day of riding we'd all gather at local gas station and sneak a little gas :-[, the good ole days. 8)

My Dually 3500 Crew Cab Longbed Cummins gets about 14-16mpg city driving, I've seen as much as 21mpg on the open highway, and you can't beat the 11-12 towing the 8000+lb toyhauler.

We had the last RWD Volvos, both wagons, a 940 which was the last 4 cylinder, which unfortunately without a turbo just didn't have quite enough grunt for some of our steeper hills. When a red light runner totaled it, it was replaced with the absolute last RWD model, a V90 (started as the 960). Larger six cylinder gave great torque, but the motor itself was a lot more complicated (also had an interference head), but did have hydraulic lifters so no adjusting. It also went through control arms at an alarming rate.
When it got old enough to start being expensive to keep going, we bit the bullet, and got my wife her very first brand new car, a Forester, which she loves.

I cruise with  940GL (1992)on local rides, from home to shop  (6min ride)  and around town.
But XC90  for family and longer trips... My kids don't like "the living room" -nickname for 940... Long car by european standards.

Not so many years back I was brainwashed by the luxury car thing until I got tired of driving an $80,000 car off the lot and its suddenly worth $60,000....just like that.

Today, I have a 3 year old Mazda CX9 Touring which I bought new (nice bang for the buck car) and an older Nissan Murano I use for my Lowes and Home Depot trips.  Wife has a Lexus RX 350 we bought off a lease that we got a great deal on.

I'm going to be giving the Murano to my brother in law soon and buying a Ford Transit 250 Van.  Why?  Because I like vans and always had one.  I also like being able to pick up just about anything and bringing it home.

agree here, only car I bought new was a BMW M5 when they just started making them again in 2000. The used ones were 12 years old so that was not an option. I try to buy cars when they are 3 years old and come with certified warranty. It makes them 50% cheaper with almost the same warranty and performance. Unlike the early years, when I used to get a new car every 18 months, I pretty much drive them until the repairs are more than the next car payment these days. Some fantastic deals can be had on used Audis. Not sure why they don't hold the value, but I sure take advantage of it!

They do on this side of the pond. I bought mine with less than 100miles (it was a stand car) with a 10% discount. Sure, could not choose any features or extras but it was a 3 month car and only left the lot once.
Not sure when I'll sell it but I'm sure it'll hold its value for a long time as they usually do here.

Perhaps this Audi thing in this country goes back to the spurious claims that gave the 5000 the reputation for suddenly accelerating on it's own (always when pulling into a garage though)
They even had to change its name to the 100 to regain some sales.

a friend of mine had a 1987 Audi 5000 turbo quattro - he was able to get 415,000 miles on it.  sold it after the gas line and heater core both broke.  now he has an A4 which is a bit less fun to drive - but dosent leak gas.

How is the Rover treating you?  My wife really wanted one but I talked her into the Lexus due to the research I did on the Range Rover.  I know we won't see the Lexus service department other than oil changes for the next 4-5 years but the reviews I read on the Range Rover went from "ok" to "awful".  Everyone absolutely loves driving them, but they spent a lot of time in the shop and not as much time on the road.  But it did seem as if most everyone was willing to overlook the reliability/dependability issues and own them due to the good times being really good.  If I thought I wouldn't be the one dealing with the vehicle every time it has an issue maybe I could see owning one, but I'd be the one taking it to and from the service department and I really didn't want that on my already full plate.

A few years back, I was shocked and actually appalled at the poor mileage of the Range Rovers; lower than a Suburban! Has that improved?

my Land Rover, true to it's British heritage had some electrical gremlins that once left me stranded in the mountains as it would not start. From what I can remember, it was in a shop about every six months for miscellaneous maintenance and repairs.  The dealer could not fix the starting problem as it was intermittent so finally I had to fix it myself. It was a corroded connection to the starter relay (you'd think the dealer would check that after going back for the third time!). Absolutely LOVED driving it, or I should say having it, as it handled like a wobbly truck (my other car at the same time was a high performance sedan which made the loose handling less palatable), but oh boy did I love to drive it in the snow. Even the Audi can't match it's performance in the crappy weather. It really was robust, go anywhere, don't fear anything (except the starting problem) kind of vehicle. It took a century to get to 60 mph (12 seconds or so) and it got 12 mpg. I still look at getting another one every now and then (looking for a 7 passenger vehicle), but then I remember the sloppy handling and disregard. The repairs, the low mpg I could live with, but feeling like a boat with an anchor dragging, was too much.

I just picked up the Rover and its certified and under warranty most likely for the duration of my ownership.  It's so nice that I'm going to overlook any slight maintenance issues I might come into.  Truthfully I am motivated by aesthetics over most anything else as I drive so little.  This truck is so nice to drive it would take a lot for me to get rid of it.

The gas mileage is awful.

I recently sold my Audi for a decent price.  Great car.  I'm now driving a 2013 Range Rover and a 1966 ca160 Honda Dream.

I don't think it has improved at near the level/rate that other vehicles have.  But the Rover is probably much like my 93' Land Cruiser in that it got almost identical mpg as my 2006 Cruiser did.  The wife's GX might get 15 on average and I squeezed 18 out of it driving to Dallas and I had to work to get that.  You compare those 2 SUVs with my Dad's Ram pickup and you have to wonder what the hell Range Rover and Toyota are doing.  The Ram is the Longhorn edition so it has a bunch of features but getting 25 mpg out of it isn't that hard on the highway and that blows my mind.  How can they not build a Land Cruiser that can get AT LEAST 18 mpg?  They are incredibly heavy vehicles but still, it shouldn't be that hard these days.  And don't get me started on not being able to get a diesel engine in a Toyota here in the States, it's ridiculous.  I'd be selling a kidney to buy a brand new diesel powered Land Cruiser or Prado here in the states.  I don't even think you can import one under any circumstances and the engine conversions that a lot of guys do with their 80-series Land Cruisers are around $20K when I checked about 8 years ago.

My dad had a Tundra 4.7L V8 put in the 93' Cruiser and it's better than the old straight 6 that was in it but it doesn't have near the gitty-up that my 08' Tundra had and it's hard to believe that they had the same engine.  My Tundra would flat out fly but the Cruiser just sounds incredible and could maybe do 0-60 in 11-12 seconds.  But man does it sound tough.

We just drove down from Wichita Kansas through Round Rock (and Pflugerville) to Austin to buy another used Subaru Forester. We've been looking for one, and found a decent one on Craigslist. We got back last night. (Alas I didn't see Alan or Mimosa anywhere!) :-)

Foresters have developed significant fan base and we've really enjoyed ours. We may keep the older one and turn it into a rolling billboard. We don't really do vehicle wraps, but we can sure decorate it ourselves. We used to have a sign business before we  began to specialize in garment decorating.

Wowee Dallas isn't much fun on I35 for thru-traffic. I havent been there in about 10 years.  What a mess!

Rovers have the lowest owner retention rate of any vehicle.  My wife likes the way they look but I told her I would never own one(unless it's a classic).  the early British wiring systems are easy for me since I've been fixing one since 1999.  The biggest problem is when people screw with them.

My buddy used to be a mechanic at a Rover dealer. He said that parts of the electrical systems were designed so poorly that there was no other explanation other than they were designed to fail. I rode in one once, liked it a lot though.

Dude, you should have stopped by.  You drove within about 2 minutes of our shop.

I would have loved to!

Unfortunately, our time frame wasn't flexible AT ALL, and I doubt you'd have liked to have a visitor at 11:00 PM on Friday evening, or 9:30 on Saturday morning.

Google said you were open 24 hours, 5 days a week. It just couldn't happen at any reasonable time, so I didn't even call.

I've never driven 1100 miles round trip for a test drive, but my son flew to New Jersey to ride home a Harley he bought sight unseen. And another time he flew to Chicago to ride home a Suzuki GSXR for an employee of mine who bought it online while serving in Iraq.

So far we really like the Forester we drove home. Fingers crossed....

Our shop is 60 miles one way from our house. (50 of it is rural 2-lane asphalt, lightly traveled) So I've often had a mild interest in a Diesel VW or something with really good MPG for when we actually do make the drive. We have an apartment in the city, so often one or both of us stays in town. At 2 bucks a gallon, I'm not so interested in an econobox. If fuel goes nearly double that again, then yeah. Maybe....

Those teensy weensy outfits often do poorly in a collision too.

I sure wish we'd have stayed at some place in Round Rock, instead of The Roach Motel I picked online. The missus will NEVER let me pick a spot again! I did the Travelocity thing and the reviews I happened to read were deceptive.
