Title: What cha using?
Post by: asdprints on October 23, 2011, 08:30:43 PM
What chemicals are you guys using to reclaim screens? Not counting dip tank stuff. I have been using my local supplier brand name ink degradent and degreaser / satin remover, and I don't have a clue what equivalent chems I am going to replace them with. Do you use off the shelf products like mineral spirits, etc. or all industry specific. Would you recommend any of the "green" products (that you have actually used)? Thanks for your sugestions.

I use Franmar which is soy based but the fine print still says it causes cancer in lab rats in CA.

What doesn't cause cancer in California rats?

Glad I don't live in California. Too many things there cause cancer in lab rats.  :P

I'm just glad I'm not a lab rat in CA.

I used to be one and it didn't seem to have any lasting effects.

I make sure to buy cigarettes that say "smoking by pregnant women can cause low birth weight blah blah blah"  doesn't apply to me.

But to the topic I started using CCI chemicals and recently changed to Easiway and I like their products better.

We use the EasiWay line of chemicals. Most of their products are "green" and work perfectly fine!

Xenon has great products at great prices.  I used them before going to work for them.  I have used or beta tested most every bodies stuff.

Easiway here. BTW, find someone close to you that sells chems, shipping can be a deal breaker.
Also, some private labels can be a good brand name just labeled for that particular supplier.

Easiway here. Get them in a half-hour from a supplier up in Longwood.

I like the stuff that works... I don't really care about brand name labels for chemicals anymore because of all the regulations imposed on them, they're all basically the same thing anyway with different names on them.

Thanks to CA and their lovely VOC laws out here, everything is going the way of 'natural' cleaners as the chemical based stuff is bad for us and therefore needs to be removed from any and all products as it's been shown to cause cancer in lab rats.... freaking please! Even the food we eat and the air we breathe has been found by the state of CA to contain chemicals that can kill you!!

Check those citrus based cleaners that we have become so used to.. more than half of them are flammable.. 2 of the cleaners (both ink washes) in the box of "Enviro line" chemicals from CCI contain flammables that are not meant for drain disposal.. yeah that cleaner you're using to clean the ink from your screen on press, and in the wash tank, is both flammable and known to ignite rag piles.. hows that for a 'natural' cleaner.

Hey Andy, you seen the Crumb documentary/biography? Wow. Just wow.

All CCI here. CitraPaste for plastisol reclaim, TS305 for color change, SR97 spot-out, ProBond
glue, GemZyne in the dip tank, Pro TexCoat emulsion, all their waterbase products, Baja Black plastisol
and we're sampling a high-opacity white this week.

Xenon has an extensive line of CA compliant or better.  I agree that the CA laws are sometimes alarmist but what are you gonna do?

Franmar for us.  We use Color Change on-press, Greeneway for ink removal, One Step in the tank, D-Haze Gel (less waste), D-Grease at the end.

Our spot remover is SPIFF-II from Albatross which is weird stuff.  Far as I can tell it's basically lighter fluid that doesn't light on fire, wtf??? :o
At least it's not the standard spot cleaner with the chem.'s that actually will kill you as in, right there, on the spot (pun intended).

I checked out pricing for CCI's Gemzyne and it's the same as OneStep so I just stuck with all Franmar.  I had a notion to buy my own Sodium Periodate, (which is what they all use) mix w. detergent and make my own dip tank stencil stripper but I have no where near enough free time for that.  Maybe I'll ask for a chemistry kit for Christmas.

Eb, that's rad you have so much coming from a single supplier in CCI.  How does the chemistry compare to Franmar?  We really like that everything in the cleanups dept around here is non-toxic and mostly odorless.  (the d-haze smells like ass, but that's the worst of it.)

Check the GemZyne again. We pay like $40 for a 27 gallon tank.
Switched to it as we could never get the "throw in dirty screen, remove clean" thing
to work.

The CitraPaste and Ts305 are citrus based, which means they smell like oranges, though
that does not make them harmless. I honestly doubt there's a chemical that can break down
plastisol that is truly harmless. The TS305 also works for vinyl and some other flatstock inks.

I'll check it out again but pricing from GSG was the same we're paying for One Step.  $40 to fill the tank and I'd be sold.  All these solutions are just sodium periodate with, presumably different mixes of detergents, etc. so I doubt one is any safer than the other.

That would be rad to have a single ink degradent for plastisol and wb.  On the few wb runs I've done we just use the TW cleaner 50/50 w. water for on press matters and just spritz with simple green before rinsing pre-dip tank.  When we start doing more I know we'll need to filter the wb run-off from the screens so maybe a recirc de-ink station would be something to check out.

I agree on the citrus thing, linonene or whatever it is probably isn't drastically safer than other options.  Need to look into that more.

Ooops, I meant 37 gallon tank. 2 gallons of Gemzyne and the rest water.
Should be about $20 a gallon for the chemical.

Simple Green works fine for most WB stuff. Tough stains get the Liquid Renuit. (forgot
that on my first list) I occasionally pre-lube WB screens with Simple Green. Helps with
staining, as does reclaiming immediately after use.

Honestly wish we could go all WB.
Plastisol is nasty, no matter how user friendly.

I pre-wet the wb screens too.  Seems to make a big difference.  I use the TW cleaner 50/50 for that as well.  I'm sure any sort of soap/water combo would do a similar job.

Yeah liquid renuit, I keep meaning to get a sample.  WB stains on high mesh is a total b.   The d-haze does good when used after every run and presuming everyone is reclaimed at the end of the day.  Past that it struggles.

CCI  GR-70   for ink removal in the washout booth (I am the only one in Arizona using this product. Same as Citra-paste but not paste It also cleans about twice as good.)
Pressure wash ink off
CCI  ER-35
Pressure wash stencil off
CCI  GR-70 (takes out all ink stains, reds whites, blacks and yellows. Great stuff)
Pressure wash ink stains
CCI degreaser (I like a standalone degreaser it also gives you one more UC step with the wash out booth cleaned out.)
Pressure wash

I use the same seyup except Easiway Supra in the tank
The 701 is a great stain remover only on very rare occasions do I have to use liquid renu-it
