I am making plans to come to Long Beach in January.
Can anybody recommend a decent hotel that's not too expensive?
At the moment I'm looking at the Best Western.
Who else is planning on coming this year?
-
We have stayed at the best western before. It is not to bad, last few years we stayed at the courtyard across the street.
Anything in town there is walking to everything and would be a good choice.

The Varden is cheap and is one of those boutique hotels, the rooms are small and minimalistic, so just a good place to keep your stuff and sleep. TripAdvisor has it as the #1 hotel in Long Beach for some reason. We stayed there for ISS a few years ago and it was about a 15-20 min walk to the convention center. It was cool and I'd recommend it if price is your #1 concern.

Hyatt Pike is where i always stay.

Perfect stumbling distance from the bars......lol

Really want to make it (for the first time) this year. At what point do the hotels start getting booked up?
-
I'd book early. The Hyatt Pike tends to sell out every year, and we usually book our accommodations as early as possible through hotels.com. There's no financial obligation until about a week prior, so if you wanted you could pre-book all the hotels you are considering and then cancel everything the week before you go.
On another note, it looks like this year they are expecting to have the floor space maxed out and opening up a new area to booths. Check out the map -

Always book early as everything close to the convention center sells out quickly

Thanks guys, and great idea Rob. Gonna get a hotel booked now and keep my fingers crossed we are able to make it.

Has the Shirt Board meeting bar I mean restaurant been established yet?
-
Kings fish really is a good place. We should get the banquet room as we we had 30 ish ppl last year at a long table, conversation was limited to who sat across from you.
Something about a limited menu for large groups. I'm ok with that if we have a large type room that's just us.
I used the online booking and name dropped for the evening of the 20th at 730 for 30 to 50 people.
-
we just booked our flights!!
-
...looks like we will be attending!! Never been to Cali, stoked about this!
-
John are you keeping the list for the dinner on the 20th.
Great idea a Buffett where you can move around and speak to different people.
I will be there with my son.
-
I name-dropped for us and passed the info on to more important people. it is a banquet room it is a set menu that reflects the same thing being served in the main dining room same portion size, it could be buffett style or course oriented and can hold up 70 people.

I took Alex's recommendation and booked into the Courtyard.

Do you still have to be at least 16 to go?

That's what keeps me away.
-
Gerry, they're talking about your real age, not your mental age. ;)
-
I fell into that one lol. That's what keeps my son away! That's better.
-
that age thing has always made me go hmmmm... I've seen kids on the floor before so not sure how strict they are.
-
I am almost positive that there are provisions for students in our field.
I think that otherwise, it could be two-fold:
A bunch of kids running around can be obnoxious, and it would be an absolute goldmine for older kids who just want the goodies and won't ever buy a damn thing.
Bottom line is they are charging exhibitors a pretty penny and essentially promising them a good target audience. Pewrhaps they don't want that audience diluted with too many non-industry "plus-ones"

I get it. Parents these days don't understand how their kids should behave and would let them run around willy nilly. My kids never acted that way, never pitched tantrums when we told them no you can't have that. Discipline has gone to the way side.
