I used to just use whatever is cheapest, which is fine for the most part.  Any "big name" is fine.

Lately though I just do it through my host even though it costs more simply because its easier to manage.

Beware GoDaddy or Network Solutions.
Namecheap is good.

But of course, many names are registered, but never hosted, or at least not until they are bought by someone else.

Yeah! I am having issues with GoDaddy right now. I have, I thought all of my domain names setup for auto renewal. I recently noticed my website was not active, and contacted the local guy hosting my site. Well! apparently my domain name expired and some a-hole now owns my domain, well guess what GoDaddy has a service that will negotiate with the other party to help me buy back my domain. WHAT A RIP OFF. Maybe I didn't have it on auto renewal but I don't recall any notice from GD. Live and learn.

Mine are on auto-renew... They NEVER forget to get their easy money from me.

There is no money in letting your domain lapse for them.

I get notices as well.  Was your info all up to date?  Would any other registrar do much more?

I have been with godaddy for years... currently have 10 active domains registered with them.

They issue here is not having up to date contact info on your account. YOUR contact information. People often let their "web guy" take care of it and that's how domains are lost.

years back I had issues with GoDaddy and left for 1and1. New company was much better for a while, than had issues and seems to have addressed them last couple of years. 'not sure about their pricing, but like some of the auto PHP and Wordpress features.
There are a lot of small hosting companies that you never know how long they'll last so, I wanted to go with somebody big.

does GoDaddy allow IMAP and have they removed the small size email box restrictions? When I was with them the biggest email box you could get was 500MB and IMAP was not an option.

We use Office 365 with them, so i think we have a 50gb limit per email and its exchange hosted.

Never let a domain expire.....Nearly impossible to get them back if you miss the last date to renew them.....The domain sellers market expired domains to highest bidder as soon as they can....

Yeah some China domain company is trying to say the can have ours, but since registered in the USA
they can't touch it, correct?

Ever seen this: ?
The question is closely related to your company name "XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX", please forward it to your company's top management. Thanks!

Dear President&CEO,

We are the organization specializing in network consulting and registration authorized by Chinese government. On November 21. 2016,a applicant named Mr. XXXXXX XXXX Technologies Co., Ltd wants to record and register the brand name XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX and some domains by our office.

After our preliminary review and verification,we find XXXX Technologies Co., Ltd has nothing to do with your company. But If you have permitted this company to apply these names, or you think the application will not damage the interests of your company, please allow us to fulfill all the registration for XXXX Technologies Co., Ltd. If you against the company's application, please let me know by email ASAP.

What may they be talking about world registry?
I was told it was a scam to register it over there and say- hey you want it, buy it from us...

Bruh, was that on a coaxial network?  Were you on DARPA Net back then? ;)

IMAP has been around for a LONG time there... we use it on a few key accounts.  Limits can be huge... we have some grand fathered accounts that are ridiculously big caches that I can move to whatever address I need.

Only issue they still have with IMAP is some dumb arbitrary won't sink more than like 20k nodes in a single folder.  Not an issue for most, but I have a client that kept ALL of his emails in his Inbox, so at 22k he started having it lock up.  I'd have to move out 4 year old emails and listen to him pitch a fit over it to get his new emails to sync up to his devices.  No one knows why this "rule" is in place over there... just the way they've been doing it.  Me thinks it was to get around some glitch from WAY back in the day.  Like when Office used to not handle larger than 2gig PST files and such.  Something like that.  Now no one wants to take the time to find out if they can lift that restriction since it only effects so few people.

I'm not a large fan of GoDaddy hosting or email really... but their domain stuff is pretty straight forward.  I've also had pretty decent luck with their support.

We've used godaddy for years, and have used name.com in the past, with satisfactory service from both. Due to a bad experience many years, I believe in keeping domain registration separate from hosting. (Host went under, we lost control of our site and our domain in one fell swoop.)

Hosts like 1and1 are resellers, not the actual registrar. Not a big fan of buying from a non-registrars.
