Hey everyone! What do you do when someone asks for black ink on black shirts?
In the past I have suggested: Black foil, clear gel, black tinted gel, 426 C with no base etc...
I feel like the gel is the closest to what the customer thinks it is going to look like.

You print black/flash/black and give it a quick heat press.
Very cool.

I love the black foil pressed with craft paper to give it a matte finish. To me it looks the best.

All of the above looks great. We have done black on black several different ways.
It completely depends on the ink layer thickness your customer wants and what THEIR mental image of what the final print looks like.

That could really depend on what the customer means. Black ink on a black shirt sounds pretty straightforward with, perhaps the only variables being gloss or matte.
You've also brought up some alternatives that may sweeten the deal.
For me, and most "tone on tone" on darks, I use a severely based down gray merely made of odds and ends, mis-mixes and other unwanted inks.

Glad we're not the only ones. We've done all of these, and Frog is right, "black on black" can
mean very different things to different people.
Black metal bands will probably want p/f/p black or a gel. Slightly less to the end of the metal spectrum
we use 6c and no base.

We've done some big block prints just using low mesh, double-stroked, with no flash. Our customer, and their customers, were happy with results. But good communication before going to press is always key to unusual jobs. (Usual ones, too, for that matter.)

you could wear it under most indoor lighting and no one would know. get JUST the right lighting tho...

Our go-to is definitely the p/f/p on low mesh and then heat press.

I have three of these this week. We just print through a 140 mesh and the customer knows it takes a couple of washes; they even brought it up!

the story part was left out.
i was at the time printing in the In-Laws basement, used whatever was at hand as test print material. apparently test printed on the back of a loud plaid button-up shirt which i thought i would certainly never wear again.
a year later my wife, her mom, and i attend my wife's bestie-at-the-time's one-year old's birthday party. somehow that shirt got stuck back in my closet.
as we're leaving, my wife asks me if i really hate her friend.
me: what are you talking about??
wife: you know the back of your shirt has a big black F*CK printed on it, right?
me: !!!
i'm a good time at a party.
