Title: I Know/Friends With This Notable Person...
Post by: Fresh Baked Printing on November 09, 2011, 10:52:11 AM
I'll go first:
My 2nd cousin is Jim Kelter (session drummer for George Harrison, John Lennon, Ringo Starr, drummer for the Traveling Wilburys, etc.).
One of my friends was an Electoral College voter, casting his vote for Obama.

You want one from music? Paul Barrere of Little Feat.
The funny story with that one is that after being out of touch with him since High School, I had a short stint at Rolling Stone in the camera department just before they moved to New York.
While opaquing page negatives, I thought that I recognized him in a pic and sure enough, he had joined the band in the mid-70's.

Friends with (and work for) Helen Rosburg (Wrigley's heiress... worth 2.1Billion), several romantic/vampire authors, Hanna Hall (young Jenny from Forrest Gump) is friends with my brother-in-law and came visit for about a week, Doug Jones (Pan of Pan's Labyrinth and the hand with eyes guy, Silver Surfer's body, Abe Sapien in the Hell Boys).  I was supposed to go on tour doing lights for Seven Dust.  I've done lights for Morris Day and the Time and George Clinton.  Oh, Dirty Jenny (Jenn Leigh) who has played with George Clinton and played on Michael Jackson's History album (her new EP just came out... check it out!)

My brother-in-law is an E-Celebrity.  He's the star of The Retarded Policeman series... Retarded Policeman #1: Hi (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yioJQFrqMXM#) That first episode is actually my other brother-in-law and my wife.  Doug Jones stars in one of the episodes.  Now my bro-in-law has met a retarded (no pun intended) amount of celebrities.  He's worked on several films and tv shows (he was on two episodes of Free Radio) he's got pics with all kind of people.

I'm probably leaving some people out... I've been in situations to bump elbows with a few "celebs" here and there... but I was never really a star struck kind of person.  I did get a little giddy when I asked George Clinton if he had any special request for lighting and he said "Just freak it"... but that was George Clinton. ;)

Would my father's run ins count? He was good friends with the band Elf and Rainbow while playing bass in the band Iron Horse. My mother was a Rainbow groupy which is how my parents met. Both elf and Rainbow bosted the late Ronnie James Dio. I get reminded of this often...

Oh yeah, we played with La Roux (New Orleans Lady) a few times.  One of the guitar player started up Presonus and I've had a few conversations with him about his gear back when it was first starting up.  He wanted to send me some to try out in our rig... but at the time I really wasn't impress with the stuff.  The new digital consoles are really badass though!

We had an employee that back in the day ran a blues club, and the house band was Blues Image(before they went all one-hit wonder)

And then my dad went to school with Dean Johnson of Hometime.  There were only 4 boys in his class at that school.

I don't know anybody, but I did almost have a pro-bowl receiver served for writing a bad check, does that count?

A good friend of mine was the original Bass player for Shinedown and now is with FUEL.  We grew up together and were in a band together out of high school for a couple years.  Jammed with Fred Durst (jack ass) a couple times as well.    We did printing for Shinedown and I designed their 45 single.  Rich (me) and Fluid are in the credits, inside jacket of their first CD.  I have both their Gold and Platinum albums. Thinking of selling them as I don't like Shindown's music at all.

Ex brother-in-law is (or was) the trumpet player for Gloria Estefan/Miami Sound Machine, a high school classmate who was bassist for Molly Hatchet, and a brother-in-law was a two-term congressman from Florida who worked for a brief stint in Carter's administration, but said he didn't think he could swing an appointment as Minister of Culture for me. I thought all politicians scored a cushy gubmint job for ne'er-do-well brother-in-laws like me to keep them off the streets and out of jail.

Sam called me last week. Apparently, he's quite the whore...

I shared a dressing room with Aerosmith for a week back in the 70's, and opened for BB King a couple of times. Us and 10,000 other bands ;D. That and a $1.50 will get me a cup of coffee. (first time I heard that expression, it was a dime)

Homer, Morgan is the crap man!  He's cool as hell.  Did he tell you that he's basically given himself whiplash playing drums several hundred times?

Pretty insane.  They (except for LaJean) are some of the most down to earth guys you will meant.  They are very awesome to hang out with, they definitely have some great road stories (clint pissing on the four track, fighting with the bouncers of the club in the middle of a show.)

Oh... I also went to high school with Jake Delhomme of the Panthers (he was a grade higher than myself, small school)... he was actually a jerk.

Where do I start I have a cousin that played football with the 49ers has 3 superbowl rings(Larry Roberts) my wife cousin is Prist holmes ex NFL player..my cousin on my side the family married Jason Caffey NBA who played with Michael Jordan (there kids are bad, brats)  My sons high school football coach is James Logan ex NFL player with the Seahawks really nice guy.  I use to be a semiPro wrestler and I,ve met so many of those guys from WCW to WWE it ain't funny, the one that was my tag team partner and friend was JYD (Junk Yard dog) he was one of the nices persons you'd ever want to meet very down to earth..I couldn't stand Lex Luger!!!! I allso met tons of music people as I was the guy who set the stage and run the sound board at times and took them out on little runs from Bobby Brown to Uncle Luke (2 Live Crew)  I was never star struck so alot of these folks would tell me all kinds of junk, they just really wanted someone to talk to that would listen and not try to hound them for autographs or trying to shove a demo or something in there face.  My cousin Larry would do that he would come home call me and say lets hit a club and he would sit as far in the back as he could so no one would see him ( kinda hard to miss a 6ft3 290 ponder) Oh almost forgot this, a year or so back a shinny white guy with long hair came in the shop set down at my desk and started talking about printing t-shirt and such for his band..well they needed them quicker than we could get them done, so he said thanks and Oh by the way I,m so in so from the Black Crows, after he left my wife is like what the hell is a Black Crow( she thought he was trying to be funny) until I goggle them.  Theres a ton more celebs I,ve met in my 46 years and here I am still a small fish in a big pond, dam I should have tried to catch a coatail LOL.

Oh let me mention one more guy I knew and thought highly of John Rainy Adkins..while I was very young trying my chops at music I use to go to the local music store ART's Music where John worked.  He would teach me a little guitar and and how to do the drum machines, a very humble guy, he never talked about his career just enjoyed chatting with me about mine and teaching me some licks on the strings.  I spent many hours over a years time in the store with John and for a long time I thought he was Hank willaims Jr., I,d always ask John you sure your not Hank or brothers.  Well years later I found out John had die cuz there was a big write in the paper about his life...this cat was the man!!! he had played with Roy Orbinson wrote many country hits for other artist had his own band name Beaverteeth and I was like WOW!, I think he even played backup guitar with the fav 4 at one time.  So one day a young lady walks in our shop with an old beatup album and wanted to know if we could do the cover on some T-shirts(sure ) and then I find out its his daughter.  Well we talked for about an hour and I found out why he kept such very low profile, but still I'll remember him as the nice Hank Jr. look alike that was very kind to me.

Funny story... At one of the sevendust concerts. I noticed a guy climbing the speakers on the side of the stage to crowd serf... The dumb A$$ jumped between songs  ???  The crowd just opened up... Wham!!! Two bouncers drug him out by his ankles.

Actually, I have a pretty funny story as well.  Years ago I was sitting in the family room of Bill Mathis.  Who was on the 1969 NY Jets Super Bowl team.  It was probably around 2001 or 2002.  And the subject of Peyton Manning comes up, I open my mouth and say something to the effect of "It's going to be really hard for Peyton to win a super bowl unless he could control turnovers." or something like that.  Peyton was struggling at that point in his career with bad passing choices under pressure i think.  At any rate, Bill says, yeah, when peyton was over at our house last year to watch the super bowl, blah blah blah.  Here i am talking about somebody like I know them because I happened to watch more ESPN than usual, talking to a guy that has peyton over to his house to watch the super bowl.  Yeah, I felt like an @ss.

Pushing it   ;)

I was high school classmates with a girl, who's dad, Fred Cox was a MN Vikings kicker back in the day. Fred Cox invented the Nerf Football. Not the material but the idea to shape the material into a football. Something like he wanted to practice kicking without the repeated impact on his foot.

I grew up 2 houses down from Matt Cedano (Days of our Lives actor) used to run around with his older brother Ray.  Dave "The Tuna" Haverlo (former MLB Pitcher) His son Jeff (1st round pick of the Mariners in '99) and BJ Garbe (also picked in the '99 draft) are all friends.  We print the shirts for Dave's Sports Talk radio show.
Most recently, Caitlynn Lawson (So You Think You Can Dance) has become a good friend of the shop.

Back in my band manager days I got to meet/know a bunch.  Recorded at Greg Duffy's studio (an old Nashville picker) who's wife is Terri (McGowan) Duffy, Rose McGowan's Mom.  Preston "Bugsy" Wilcox (drummer for Marvin Gaye, Ike Turner, Patti Labelle & a bunch of others).   Neil Cirton (Grammy winning engineer).  Mike Sak (engineer "A Boy Named Goo", Goo Goo Dolls).  Ben Smith (drummer for Heart.  Ben & my "house/go-to" drummer are real tight).  Used to party with Miles Kennedy (back when he was playing with Mayfield Four.  Now he's with Slash) & Nate Mendel (when he was with Christ on a Crutch.  He went on to Sunny Day Real Estate and then Foo Fighters).
My buddies studio in Las Vegas (my home away from home) landed Ivan St. Ives Walker as a house engineer.  (Patti Labelle and the O'Jays).  Eddie Levert (the O'Jays, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee) has also made it his home.  Can't wait to get down there and meet them face to face rather than the phone or Skype.

Speaking of Zac Brown Band....The band I'm recording now played a side stage for the Zac Brown concert at The Gorge Amphitheater this past Sept.  Their contract had more CAN NOT DO's than any contract I've ever seen.  It was insane.

I've seen Evo play a few times before I knew he was "living the dream" on the side, being a screenprinter.   :Dk
And I've had some beers with Sam.  Does that count?   ;D ;D ;D

I hate to even ask since nobody has brought it up, but Tony, I'm assuming Joe is close relation to you?  I feel like an idiot for asking this but I've always wondered and it may be common knowledge around here but I've never read it.  I was watching an HBO special on Mickey Mantle the other day and Joe was on there several times being interviewed.
Funny but we could'nt make the connection but my sister and I had dinner with hima long time ago when she was a reporter for the Boston Globe.l Super nice guy.
He even got mention in a Seinfeld episode.

I may or may not have done something similar on a tour bus of a local Texas music star/legend but I won't mention names.  He's pretty big around here, like Pat Green big but most of y'all haven't ever heard of him.  Most of my friends were amazed that I even got on the bus, much less hung out.  That was a great night, and that bus was ridiculous, well over a million dollar ride with tons of upgrades.

my grandfather was a history professor at University of Southern Maine at Orono. He wrote the entry for Maine in the 1978 (i think it was 1978) Encyclopedia Britannica.

My grandmothers friend was the inventor of the Bangor Brownie, she wrote a bunch cookbooks too...

my girlfriend was a nanny for a couple that is friends with Peter Yarrow.  a few years back we visited for a day and met Peter.   After we had dinner with Peter, lots of little kids gathered around to listen to him sing "Puff the Magic Dragon".

My guess is Dale Watson (the Texas Troubador). The man dedicated to keeping pure country music alive.

Did some shirts for Curly Boo Johnson, Harlem Globe Trotters.
Did lunch with Casey Urlacher, talked with his brother Brian, and their mom used to call me for replica jerseys of Casey's.  She also questioned me one day as to "why would Brian run off with Paris Hilton and leave his wife and 2 boys"  A hard one to answer.
Sat and talked with Mike Somerfield after a set he played here in town.  Head East Never Been Any Reason.
Phil Collins opened his tour here in town many years ago.  I used to go to his 2 week closed practice.  Talked with him a few times.
My son coached swimming with Ryan Lochte's father and met Ryan.
Just went fishing with Boomer Grigsby.
Interviewed the San Diego Chicken a few times.
Been trying to form a relationship with Jesus Christ for many years....
But, by far, the one that just tickles me and makes me giggle like a school girl.
I went fishing with Sam Wildt.  (he's much shorter in real life) but a giant of a person!

I shared a dressing room with Aerosmith for a week back in the 70's, and opened for BB King a couple of times. Us and 10,000 other bands ;D. That and a $1.50 will get me a cup of coffee. (first time I heard that expression, it was a dime)

Steve

I dated a girl who's dad was one of the original members of Aerosmith.

Shane, that would be Ray Tabano would it? He left just before they really took off.

I think that is the dude. She had a different last name than her dad though. She told me he quit to start a family and then they blew up or something like that.

There was a story in the Boston Globe last year about people that left or were asked to leave bands before they hit. Like Pete Best with the Beatles, and Ray was one of them in the article. Talk about a bad move...

Quite a bit younger than Dale and I think, believe it or not, he hits the party scene a tad harder than most Texas singer songwriters, which is saying something right there.  He tried to bring back the hard nights like Waylon, Jerry Jeff, Johnny Cash, Merle etc. used to have.
