Title: It was a sad day....
Post by: Audifox on June 28, 2017, 01:48:57 PM
After many years of great service, one of our loyal employees, well..... died.
Our beloved Epson 3000 printed it's last film. No fixing this time.  :(

Well now I guess we'll have to go shopping......

I loved our 3000, aside from cutting, I thought it was a better printer than the 4800 or 4900 series.  We got some insane seps off that thing.  Our RIP was really awesome though.

We bought the Epson 1430. Seems to be a decent replacement. Haven't done anything with halftones yet, but I'm optimistic that hopefully it will be as good.
The only thing is that it only does 13" wide, so that might be a bit of a work around. As of late though, artwork seems to be getting smaller again so it might work out just fine.

CTS might go a long way to make you un-sad ;)

I wish epson would revive the old 3000, it was and we still have one a workhorse of a printer, it could be fussy at time's, but a really good printer.  CTS might be the way to go if your shop can handle the cost, I know we can't and won't even dream of having one here, it would be a jone's thing for us and a nice hit in the pocketbook.

CTS is definitely a luxury item in our shop.  I don't do near enough some times of the year to justify us having it.  On the film side, I really liked the 4880 when I had it.

I was thinking the same thing LOL..... I'd be willing to bet Tony has joined the dark side and would not go back to film. What do ya say tony, how do you like them films now?

Probably because he was "forced" to use it.  Get it guys?  The force?

I love explaining dumb jokes.

The 1430 is a great printer, but the ink carts are small, I decided not to go all black with our's and just reload the black cart and still print color proofs with it.  Going all black IMHO only extends the the black ink from running out so quick, I could be wrong, and the film will only except so much ink any way.  For you that have CTS I'm jealous because I can see time saved in many area's, but still not in our budget  :'( :'(

A CTS in not in our future. As a two person shop, we can't justify the cost, and I don't have the space for it.

I was looking at the all black system available for the 1430 printer, does anybody have this? If so, thoughts?

You really don't need all black, just have black in one channel and cleaning fluid in the rest. Your halftones will be cleaner, and don't worry about the density, it should be fine. Test it of course...

You can find cheap 1430 refillable carts on Amazon. Just make sure you use a good black dye in there. I recommend getting the dye from film direct or the stuff ryonet sells. I don't use a Rip so I keep black in all of them, it seems to make a darker film. Use a paper clip on the chip as a makeshift chip resetter when they're being stubborn and you're good to go.
