Title: Printing on auto with 1/2 squeegee
Post by: Logoman on September 30, 2019, 11:37:24 PM
We were setting up a job today for a 3 color on a zippered hoodie. We tried using our 1/2 squeegy but since there was no squeegy on one side it would not print the entire image. The squeegy was at an angle when it printed so only part of the image printed. We have problems printing over zippers. Any suggestions?

Add half to the other side, or cut out a notch from a full squeegee in the middle where the zipper is.

This is where the quick clamp shines because you can make weird squeegees on the fly and change them back to normal really quick.

That’s the way we do it, same squeegee for polos.
If you have a wheel grinder just grind away about 2” wide and 1/2” deep in the middle of the squeegee.

We use about a 6” cut piece of squeegee rubber and then adjust the chopper cylinder stop down on the opposite side so the squeegee levels out when it hits the pallet.  Works well for us.

Anything with buttons or zippers go on sleeve pallets, changing pallets on the MHM is almost as fast as changing squeegees

even with split squeegees you will damage the screens. Use foam under the garment to absorb the high points. You can go with split squeegee or reinforce the screen as additional precaution.

Take  making tape on back to protect screen, give it cushion and last longer breakdown wise. Helps also.

You can also make notched pallets for the zipper and use standard squeegees.  1/4" masonite on top of pallet, leave a 1/2-3/4" channel, set up pallets so the zipper is over the end of the pallet (M&R pallets only) shim screen with same masonite thickness under screen frame, raise squeegees.  This can ruin a good squeegee, so we did create a set just for zippered sweats.  This method helped with over seam printing as well.

Alan what machine were you printing on, with the MHM you'd have to be adjusting the off contact on all the heads.   I'm not even sure they can adjust that much.
We do put thick tape front and back on the screen where the zip is to stop it ripping but use a cut squeegee.
