Title: Different rock and roll do you know?
Post by: mooseman on April 03, 2020, 03:59:59 PM
Lets have another go at this can you guess who rymin' Paul Simon is referring to in in the blue color line from his song Me & Julio Down by the Schoolyard....guess don't Google!
mooseman

The mama pajama rolled out of bed
And she ran to the police station
When the papa found out he began to shout
And he started the investigation
It's against the law
It was against the law
What the mama saw
It was against the law
The mama looked down and spit on the ground
Every time my name gets mentioned
The papa said, "oy, if I get that boy
I'm gonna stick him in the house of detention"
Well I'm on my way
I don't know where I'm going
I'm on my way
I'm taking my time
But I don't know where
Goodbye to Rosie, the queen of Corona
Seein' me and Julio
Down by the schoolyard
Seein' me and Julio
Down by the schoolyard
Whoa, in a couple days they come and take me away
But the press let the story leak
And when the radical priest
Come to get me released
We was all on the cover of Newsweek
And I'm on my way
I don't know where I'm going
I'm on my way
I'm taking my time
But I don't know where
Goodbye to Rosie, the queen of Corona
Seein' me and Julio
Down by the schoolyard
Seein' me and Julio
Down by the schoolyard
Seein' me and Julio
Down by the schoolyard

I don't know but have always thought that it must be referring to specific event.
Excited to find out, I'm not gonna look it up.

Do not know but it is a great song. Check out "The Boxer" If the lyrics do not make you cry then you are not human.

If you are in the mood check out Paul Simon and Jimmy Fallen performing "Cecilla" live with the stomp group. If you are not in the best of moods, this may lift you up a bit

Maybe this is a little too deep given the mental focus of the current throat hold on America and the planet.
Paul Simon one of the most talented entertainers of our time is also one of the most poignant.
Taking from Tonypep his comment and I quote " Check out "The Boxer" If the lyrics do not make you cry then you are not human"  sums up the Simon talent and the reach of his art.

Paul Simon not as strong possibly historically as musically talented most likely took some artistic license in the line  We was all on the cover of Newsweek.
I believe, If correctly reported the line would have to have been We was all on the cover of Time. Just doesn't ring right.
Anyway the answer is below the radical priest was Father Daniel Berrigan. You can dig more about him here

Drive west on Sunset to the sea
Turn that jungle music down
Just until we're out of town
This is no one night stand
It's a real occaision
Close you eyes and you'll be there.
It's everything they say.
The end of a perfect day.
Distant lights from across the bay.
So fine, so young, tell me I'm the only one.
We'll jog with show folk on the sand.

Drink Kirschwaser from a shell.
San Francisco show and tell.
Well I should know by now That is a spasm.
Like a Sunday in TJ....Its cheap but its not free.
That I'm what not I used to be.
And that love is not a game for three.

If you are asking about the name of the band Steely Dan lets see .........how do I say this....
The name is derived from a personal pleasure device with a chrome like appearance  owned and most likely operated by a working girl acquainted with the band who named the object in question after a gone but not forgotten boyfriend named Dan.

Left out a few lyrics.
My friends say no, don't go for that cotton candy.
Son you're playing with fire.
The kid will live and learn.
As he watches his bridges burn.
From the the point of no return.
Babylon Sisters!!!!!
You gotta shake it baby.
Another chicken dinner for someone who knows who almost played drums for the band.

Why because some of us read?, LOL! I actually found Jim Caroll's Basketball Diaries to have a very similar flavor.
And as for the would-be drummer, he's him and you're not!

I think that you use the term "America" a tad too broadly son.
Spoken as one obviously never at the wrong end of a billy club or tear gas cannister.
Righteous to some was mereley "Anti-American Commie subversive" to others.

But lest this degrades into a strictly political debate, lets just listen to the song.

You'd be surprised. Recall we've had a few wars in my time, despite not calling them that.
Not to mention the white nationalists in Berkeley of all places, what, 3 years ago this month?
Wonder how many of them are taking that socialist handout...

Pardon the annoying posts. Its just that I dislike that the good music is overlooked and never played. Everything has to be generic and banal these days. "Yes, Virginia" by the Dresden Dolls. That is my recommended observation for today.

Since I don't have these videos on my own server, I can't post them directly either. I simply include links to the address of the video.
After you "YouTube" the video you want to share, copy the address. Then it's as simple of hitting paste in your post.
It ain't rocket surgery! We'll make you a champion Copy-Paster-Poster yet!  ;D

I'll agree with that, a fine player indeed. The sidemen that were used as well were also fantastic, Jay Graydon and Larry Carlton in particular. Personally, I'm always more affected by the music than the lyric, as everyone has an opinion right? Of course, if talking rock, there isn't a lot of pure instrumental rock getting the airplay, but we all know stuff that knock us out. I get the same buzz listening to the Wind Cries Mary and Little Wing as I did in '67 and '68. The same with other genres as well, music is a good place to go when under duress.

Looking into all that but I do not want to put too much on the table for those who do not want to see or listen. All of this is a quick click away.
Paul Simon, Carly Simon, Carole King "Tapestry"and Neil Young "Harvest". These are some of my background noises as I put the studio together.
Call me a luddite I'll take it. Learning how to paint and write again and that suits me just fine.
