Title: Average Prints per gear box?
Post by: brandon on November 03, 2020, 09:20:52 AM
Hey, looks like I am replacing another gear box. Seems odd to me I have replaced them at 500,000 prints, 1 million prints, and then a little higher. Is it really just luck to go over a couple million prints? All have been regularly maintained by myself, staff, and service techs. Are they really this temperamental or am I thinking they can handle more than they actually can?

What exactly is wearing out in the gear box? Bearings, seals, gears? Can they not just be rebuilt like most gear boxes?

My first thought is why not a rebuild or even better yet how hard are you running your press that the transmission element  sounds like it is overloaded. Just a thought I had.

Being a water base shop two strokes are the usual mode for us so in my opinion not running it full blast open by any means. Plus it only has 1.2 million prints on it. Or should I accept that is more than enough prints?

Gear Boxes can last a life time as long as they are configured correctly, use quality gear oil and maintain them. But the most important information needed here is what is breaking down with your gear boxes. Bearings, seals or gears?

The first one was actually replaced by M&R due to they said recieved a bad batch of them. They just took care of it for us. That was like 13 or so years ago. The other I cant remember and this one just started as like today. Not sure yet. And during the day I have to teach my kid at home.

I've ran presses with 10 million prints and original gear boxes.  Your pretty on top of your game did someone miss a a couple maintenance days like greasing all points.  What year is the Sporty in question?  I have a 2016 EXG with about a million prints and a 2019 EX with barely anything because this year screwed me LOL.

Not sure if it has anything to do with the gear box, but does the press have the oil reservoir thing next to the air filter? I know some older presses didn't have those so maybe that piece was added on later to keep a flow of oil running to the press? I'm mechanically illiterate so forgive my lack of knowledge and correct terminology.

Hey press is maintained weekly by us and quarterly by service tech. Nothing has been missed. Press is 2014 no oil on it which I thought was weird when it arrived. Working on issue now. When the last tech "sped up the press" is when this happened.

Just the EX. Did you sell your TAS presses or do you still have them? I think the last time I saw you was at the airport! Long Beach!

I haven't had a problem with our 2 Sportsman EX.  I have had the problem on the gearbox with our K-950 folder, replaced it in July and it seems to be starting to fail again - wobbly.  Motovario is the brand of the gear box having problems.  Our other K950 has different parts and no issues with it yet.

Sold both Tas presses and replaced with a 12c EXG and a 10c EX.  I bought the EXG first so when the EX came in it was a huge let down to me.  Long Beach was probably the last time your right I haven't been to a show in a bit.
