Title: AND THE BAND PLAYED ON
Post by: mooseman on April 14, 2012, 08:01:05 AM
this guy came in yesterday with 4 tee shirts on plastic hangers. He has a band wants shirts for his band or a gig or a battle of the bands I am not really sure exactly what he wanted. The design was all text , multi text styles with multi band names spot color red & white back white front simple stuff but a ton of way out text styles in typical rock band styles

we ask questiions he says
"i got these shirts from my last shop , I don't like them, there are a lot of problems including some wrong band names"
the fonts are not quite right blaw blaw blaw......I want something better

Q We ask how man shirts .......... A about 50
here is where it starts to go south
Q Do you have the font names... A no man i don't have the fonts . i am a musician not a computer guy, i will get you the new band names and you can just copy the fonts off the shirts .

We say man that is a lot of fonts and you just said some of them are not right besides you can't copy fonts off tee shirts and make new names for new shirts.
He says the last shop did it why cant you "she" ( the previous printer I guess)  copied fonts of the shirts we had before these and printed these shirts.

We say man i can't create 6 to 8 font styles for you I will give you some web pages where you can pick out the fonts you like we can set up you shirts fron there. He says....look man i am a musician, i don't even have a computer why can't you just copy these fonts like she did. i do want to see the stuff that is going on the shirt first because these (referring to the shirts ) are not right she screwed up on some of the names and this font looks like crap ( referring to a font the looked like someone scanned off a shirt and reprinted off a jpeg file)

Look man I am a screen printer we don't create fonts we down load them. If you want to front us $30.00 per font at 8 fonts that is $240.00 up front before we start anything else we will go into the internet and find thoes or similar fonts for your shirts .

He says man i am a musician, I pay cash up front and I don't have time to get the fonts and i don't have a computer.
we ask doesn't someone in you band have a computer..... he says man i am a musician, I pay cash up front and I don't have time to get the fonts and i don't have a computer.

we say man we can't help you ...he collects his shirts pissing and moaning about how he is a musician and all he wanted was some decent tee shirts and if i don't wabt to do them then he will just go somewhere else....AND THE BAND PLAYED ON  again somewhere else again I am sure

For all of his "hey, man, I pay cash up front" I see he didn't jump at the opportunity to "front" you the $240 to find his friggin' fonts to get the ball rollin' 'cause he's like, a musician, man, and he doesn't have a computer . . .
But ya gotta like the "hey, man, just get the fonts off the shirt" . . .

He will go to the next printer and tell them that the last printer he talked to (that would be you), told him he could do it and for less money!

I'd imagine that sounds like a typical week. I'd bet that If that doesn't happen several times a month, your not doing enough business. LOL.

Well here's some real musicians.......Tenacious D From HBO......Caution language

Catch Phrase - "I'm a writer" just stuck with me after "I'm a musician"

My son introduced me to Tenacious D about 7 years ago.

That's Jack Black before his arrival to Cinema.

Some of them are simply hilarious.  Here's a classic - (again Language warning even though this stuff was all on HBO) -

Tenacious D on Jesus Ranch - HBO Series (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1VOtsSjPS3g#)

I don't know if you ever watched Tenacious D or not, but what you posted reminded me of an episode (I could not find) where JB and KG are in a record shop with the really grizzly and bearded proprietor.  JB and KG are acting like they are waiting (pens in hands) to give autographs.  The only problem is, they don't have the proprietor's buy in.  So the guy behind the counter says "Look guys, if you're not gonna buy anything, you're going to have to leave".  It was hilarious.

As a player who has dealt with many players over the years, all I can say is, it sounds typical. I use the analogy of, "I'll tell you what, you play for free, and if we like like you, we'll pay you next time..." The point being that neither of us wants to work for free. Art is $60.00 per hour, you want to pay us to search for fonts you might not like? I bet he can't read music either.

He must have been an older musician because the young people I deal with, most of them are better at PS than I am. It's the schools and business's that hand me a business card and say copy that , last years shirt to "scan", crappy 72 res jpeg made in windows paint or stolen art from Google Images.  The biggest issue I run into with bands when it comes to artwork is they try to pass me the artist's "proof sample" image because they do not want to pay for the high res version.

that is so true dan. We would take the order, build in the appropriate art time, tally it up and take the money and produce the order. Why should it matter what it takes as long as you get paid?

I gathered that this particular client did not want to pay the $240 additional charge to locate and print these fonts nicely. On 50 shirts, $240 additional "search and whatever" time could not be easily built in on a job, especially to this individual and even his demographic known for tight fists.
Now, whether that $240 was a reasonable amount, I can't say.

Especially given he was just gonna throw it up on here or another font forum and make everyone else do the work.  :p  j/k

the posted story was the Cliff Notes version..... i  left out a bunch of interaction with him.
it didn't matter because by the time I got to the $240.00 font finders fee tha man was already so upset with me he was already slamming his papers on the counter and folding up his shirts.
The deal really went to heavy metal hell when i said i could not copy fonts from the shirts he had , he wanted to litigate that and refused to accept the fact i was not going to workfrom his shirt art.
the guy simply didn not want to get involved with the process and clearly did not like taking no as an answer.
there is one good thing I can say abouit him he is gone....GOOD and thank goodness ;)

Way off track, but I just watched the guy from LG change the panel on our plasma set, and it was pretty interesting to see just what's in there.

They are supposed to be coming out with an LCD TV that is 4mm thick!

At the CES trade show, they say that the OLED tv's were the stars. The "O" stands for organic. These screens use a combination light source and LCD, eliminating the edge-lighting or back-lighting LED's that we have now, (at least on out LCD sets) and yes, only 0.16" thick and 16.5 lbs for the LG.
Dig deep, $8000-$10,000 expected for a 55" from LG or Samsung later this year.

Sony has something similar in the wings

He always has to have the latest and greatest... and pitches a fit about how much money he spends/I cost him.  *shrug*

Sorry to keep going on TV's, but right now, there are some fantastic deals on TV's as low as $650 (on a one day sale) but typically about $750 at Fry's for a 50" LG50PZ950U plasma smart TV that was their top of the line plasma a year ago. Absolutely the most TV for the money I have seen.
Its picture surprised us a being comparable to a Samsung 8000 C( though it is a 55") which cost closer to $2000 Christmas 2010 (with the new 8000"s with no touch touch screens closer to $2900. But hell, whats the point of a touch screen big screen when you have a remote?)

That's all we do here. Times certainly have changed since the OATS and Winterland days. Now every new design must be sampled and a digital must be uploaded to the work order to be approved. We actually have a photo studio with professional lighting etc and even have to use models at times. It's worth it but you gotta work for it.
