Title: Any Competition Shooters?
Post by: terryei on May 09, 2012, 09:58:35 AM
USPSA or IDPA?
Just started USPSA, what a blast!  Not that good yet...  I shoot production level with an XDM.
Real pain finding a left hand holster for an XDM 5.25.  They don't exist.
You shoot?  What?

I shoot for buckles at my local club.  All scatter guns though.  Not good enough to compete with the upper teir guys at my club, luckily they handicap us pretty well.

I've got an XD 40 Sub Compact but I don't shoot competitively.  I love the Springfield guns, my dad has an XD-M 45 Compact and I like it a tad bit more than my 40.  What caliber is your XDM?  Do they have a "competition" series in the XDM or is the 5.25 considered the comp version?  My XD 40 is the 3.8" barrel so I won't be doing any competition shooting with it, but I do find that it is more accurate than the other pistols I've had.  A few weeks ago I pulled off a lucky shot from about 30 yards.  I had very little room left on the target since I had shot it all to hell so I was aiming at the "6" at the top of the target and actually sent the bullet right through the dead center of the number.  I ended my session with that shot and my brother still doesn't believe that I was aiming at that part of the target.

I don't know much about competition shooting but from the little I do, it seems that the 1911's are used more for competitions over any other.  I could be wrong with that and it is that way simply because the 1911's are just way more popular, and not necessarily better at comp shooting.

I shoot a 9mm.  Yes the 5.25 was basically made for competition shooting.  Springfield supposedly worked with Latham, a USPSA expert to develope the gun.  That being said, it's the person behind the gun that does the shooting!
I've only shot USPSA, not rated yet have only shot in 2 quilifiers.  IDPA looks kind of cool and I might travel to one of those in the next couple of weeks.

WOW, you are close to a nice range!  It looks like Rob Leatham teaches a course their.  He worked with Springfield to develope the XDM 5.25.  Sign up for a USPSA match.  I have not shot a Steel Challange but am going to shortly.  You'll find some really nice guys and have a great time.  It's my new hobby.

Holy S, you got that one for your first pistol?  Freaking awesome.  Is the bi-tone just black with chrome slide?  I want the OD green with chrome slide or the dark earth with chrome.  Mine is just an all black, boring but oh well.

Ya its a really nice Range. I didn't know anything about it until a month ago. I needed a hobby to get me out of the shop and have something new to talk about. (as many of you may know, people get really tired of hearing about screen printing) Rob Leatham is at the range. You can find alot of you tube videos of him there. I haven't met him yet. I  have only shot 150 rounds with the gun so far but it shoots good. At 11 yards I keep a 8 inch group. I need more practice. I was having a really hard time with the back sight being all black and shooting at a black target. I put some white dots on the back sights last night with finger nail polish. We will see if that helps.

Alan,

Yes is it my first pistol. I was looking at alot of guns. I liked the Springfield the most because of all the safety features and how it felt in my hand. I liked the XDMs the most for feel. They have a larger handle and my whole hand fits on them nice. I was going to get the XDM 4.75 but for $150 more I could get the 5.25. I got the bitone because it just looks better and was only $15 more. Just the slide is stainless the handle is black and the barrel is black. Its a great gun so far.

Affordable price a bt99 if you can find an older one they have a long forcing cone so they are nice, the Broadway is a nice double, also older, cintoris are nice and benelli has real nice autos but I hate autos.
I would say no matter what you get spend the money and have it fitted To you, it makes a huge differance.  Adjustable plate and comb.

I don't know much about shotguns, but I hear the name Benelli a good bit and that old dude that can hand toss 10 clays up and pop them all one by one before they hit the ground did it with a Benelli straight out the box.  Granted, that old man ain't straight out the box, but you can see that that is one smooth operating gun.

Have you tried http://americanholstercompany.com

Custom made and I have family and friends that have them and would not have anything less.

I had an old german mauser '06 rifle action fitted on a glass bedded free floating bull barrel with monkey wood stock back in the day when I was loading my own rounds.
I was close to same hole at 100yds and 50 cent size at 600.
I got to shoot with some snipers at post one time. That was FUN 8)

I shot a BT99 a couple of weeks ago.  Didn't care much for it, felt heavy and was only single shot which makes doubles very challenging.  Then i was handed a 725  --WOW  -- time to sell the boat.  Mostly shooting trap with an old model 12 Winchester.  Just got the Sako .243 out of the shop and am in the process of getting it dialed in  - groundhogs beware.

Personally i like the o/u with a little longer barrel for trap.  I've got a pair of Lightnings (Browning) and the 26" and 28" barrels don't have quite enough reach for the trap range although they're fantastic skeet guns.  Also shooting Winchester AA 1 1/8 load with 3dr equiv - 7 1/2 or 8 shot for trap and there's currently a $20/flat rebate.

Sam, do you carry that M&P?  If so how do you like it.  Seems a bit heavy for a carry to me.

I was all set on a Taurus Millennium (40c), I know "boooo", but you can't beat the size and weight... then I held it back to back with a P4Storm (compact... not sub) and had a hard time decerning the extra weight but on paper the p4 shows to be a ton heavier.

I still can't figure out what I want to carry.  I was hoping I would like the PT740 slim but I hate the grip.  Maybe I should look at grip options for the 740 *shrug*.

Concealed or open carry?

Do you find the M&P bulky or heavy?

I really dig the M&P and it was my VERY close 2nd choice when I bought the XDm 40 and now that I'm doing it all over again I'm thinking I might rather the M&P (not that the XDm wasn't the bee's knees... but I want a manual safety.)

I love the safety features on the SA's, and it is a huge factor with the wife letting me keep it more accessible.  She didn't want the gun inside the house before but I gave her the old sales pitch about the safety features.

unlike you Gilligan...I always know where my weapons are and they are NOWHERE around a 2 yr old....

where I live if I did what you did I would be in jail and quite honestly you give gun owners a bad name, but not controlling your weapons...

but then again that is just how I feel....

*shrug*  They were in my house... if items aren't secure/safe in my house then I'm not sure why I'm sleeping there at night.

Someone betrayed my trust.  I guess if you have a friend that betrays your trust then that is your fault?  I'm all about Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.  But this was the fool me once part. Sorry, I don't take the rap for that.

My daughter can work an iPad and an Android phone probably better than you can... No place is safe from her I fear.

The more levels of protection from her having an accident with my gun the better.  If I have a FNX-40 with it decocked and the manual safety on, now she has to disable the safety (I'm certain she might do that) AND now pull a 10lb trigger... that part I bet she can't do.  As opposed to my friend's Glock 19 I'm wearing right now... all she needs to do is pull a rather light trigger and it goes bang.  So far she has shown ZERO interest in the guns except the pink ones at the store which is why my wife, as much as she wants one, will not get a pink "pretty" gun.  We do what we can, but we can't do it all.  Mistakes happen, putting that potential mistake as many layers away from her as I can the better.

I could also be the best/safest driver in the world and obey all safety rules and guidelines while driving my car... that doesn't mean I'm not going to put her in her car seat REAR facing until she is too big to be rear facing any longer.  I can't control every facet of every moment of every day of my and hers.  So I layout as safe of a foundation as I can for her safety.

With having 2 kids I found its best to get them involved with guns at an early age, at 7 they got the bb guns at nine the 22/410 at 12 the 380. It teaches a healthy respect and takes the mistery out of it. All guns have trigger locks other then the ones in the safe. Kids will play with guns if you dont show them how much respect they need to have for them.

ABSOLUTELY... I was taught that myself, the only part I would say that was lacking in that for me was access to pistols.  I had shotguns and bb guns in my hands anytime I wanted without even asking and I was always very careful.  But we didn't have many pistols and they were more of an allure and something I wanted to play with.

My father never let me use his pistol so I eventually borrowed it without his permission to "play with", did the same with another friend's father's pistol.  Nothing bad happened as we were still careful, but it shouldn't have been like that.
