Carlin has some seriously great stuff out there.   I keep scoring his records at the thrift stores around here for next to nothing.

Nobody's rocking Slayer, Fugazi, Moistboyz, Beck, Zappa, KRS-One, Ween, or the Melvins?   I don't know if I can believe that...

Good call--Minor Threat totally offsets the Oasis.   ;)   How about Joy Division, Black Flag, and the Dead Kennedys?   I still laugh when I hear the track "My Payola"....

And I think I'd be at home listening to Gerry's collection--although I listen to the funk and R&B part of my collection more to kick back and relax.  A little Roy Ayers, Ohio Players, maybe some Sly, or Graham Central Station?   I have to admit though, ever since I saw Ziggy Marley doing a Cover Girl commercial, I can't really  handle him... Bob, Stephen, Damien, sure.  Ziggy... nope.  I really dig "Scratch", Augustus Pablo, King Tubby, Sly and Robbie, Rockers, and that whole crew as well...  wish I could find more of it.

Cool list, Manchester Orchestra are from a few miles down south of where I live, I met them a couple of times when the were on the Kings of Leon tour.  They were little kids it seemed like.  I have been rocking the Mumford and Sons lately too!

You guys are gonna eat me up and spit me out, but at this very moment, I am listening to Cheap Trick Live At Budakan (on vinyl)

Thing is, just as with my mp3's, on vinyl I usually play a few individual tracks. A lot of albums do not stand up from the first to the last track for me.

Okay, solved that problem with a "best of" album up next. Elvis Costello and the Attractions.

I'm really stoked about seeing the A's new rookie kid win the game with a walk-off to my oldie soundtrack.

Thanks. I've seen them a couple of times, they sound great live. I'm seeing The Black Keys and Jack White at the end of July at the Firefly Festival in Delaware. Can't wait for that. If you're into Mumford, give The Avett Brothers a listen.

Rap and country are both banned in the shop.  I can't listen to it, so it doesn't get played.  Southern rock is cool by me though.  I give shop tours and I don't want junk blaring back there.

In atlanta they took away the BEST station.  It seriously played everything from the 60-80's and the song rotation was great.  Now we are stuck listening to crap again with the same 3 songs every hour.

The way it works in our shop is I provide a radio.  I don't want people bringing in their own stuff because then they spend most of the day screwing around with their ipod to find the song they want.  Drives me crazy when I walk back there and the press isn't running because they are fidgeting with electronic sh!t.

Brad we have a fairly new employee a young man that I have been having a hard time with using ear buds off his IPOD. I have made ear buds (head phones) a no no here but he keeps getting caught. Then he has the guts to lie to my face and say they were only in his ear but no music on,yea right I guess you were them for comfort.

Point is as i try to explain to him we have to many machines going and your auditory sense is very important when it comes to safety, also phones are always ringing and plain and simple it is rude. It royally pisses me off when I have to yell to get his attention and he knows it, what he does not know is his arse will find the door if he keeps it up.

Nice--Guru's Jazzmatazz stuff is a pretty good fusion project--speaking of MMW--anyone check out Combustication with Z-trip?  I used to be OK with the Dead till I did sound for a cover band...  Ever notice how every dead fan has this tape that no one else has of the best show ever?  And it's never ANY good AT ALL?     ;D

Definitely an All/Descendents fan--I used to go by the Blasting Room every day on my way to work back in the sign shop days... although I'm never lucky enough to catch them jamming 'round town.  Not going to enough bars I guess.

I still can't believe no one listens to Zappa... Half the stuff on this thread probably wouldn't exist if he (and his buddy Beefheart,) hadn't been around.

I used to be OK with the Dead till I did sound for a cover band...  Ever notice how every dead fan has this tape that no one else has of the best show ever?  And it's never ANY good AT ALL?     ;D

This raises two points.
1. Many live shows are not nearly as good as the hopped up, hyped up fans feel they are because they are also enjoying the whole experience. Hell, it could be a whole weekend including a twelve hour road trip.
2. The Dead are(were) in a distinct minority by allowing if not actually encouraging bootleg recordings of their shows.

When these two facts coincide, it's not surprising that one head's favorite or "best" is another's painful memory of making the mistake of taking the blue acid rather than the mellow yellow one.

most of the music that is played in the shop isnt what i would ever listen to - i cant stand commercial top 40 pop...

we dont allow headphones in the shop -  cant hear fire alarm etc...    so we have one radio with speakers placed around the shop...  we do allow employees to plug in their MP3 players as long as the presses dont stop for them to keep changing the song or whatever.   on the FM dial it ranges from classic rock, soft rock, contemporary country...

at my desk i listen to:

Russian Circles
Maybeshewill
Ratatat
Stereolab
65daysofstatic
Crystal Castles
Godspeed You! Black Emperor
John Coltrane
Miles Davis
Santogold
They Might be Giants
Pixies
Kraftwerk
Beethoven
Mozart

for those of you who like rap music - check out MC Paul Barman - hes got some clever lyrics

I pictured you as a National League guy, a Giants honk, guess I was wrong.  I'm the same way about listening to a ball game, baseball means a lot to me.  I wish I wouldn't have gotten so burned out by the sport in high school, it caused me to not take the opportunities I did have to play in college.  I wanted a normal life and I knew I didn't have what it took to play beyond DII, maybe a lower level DI team.

As far as music, damn, I've never heard of 90% of the bands that have been listed, but I'll say I'm just an old hillbilly and prefer the classics from Waylon, Willie, Merle, Kristofferson, and the local Texas old timers like Guy Clark, Jerry Jeff Walker, Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle, Willis Alan Ramsey.  I've long thought that most newer country is pure crap.  I like pre 91' George Straight, Alan Jackson, and not much else from the current crop of country stars.  Maybe once a year or so a song comes out that perks my interest but it's rare these days.  I really like the older stuff from Jimmy Buffett (73'-81') and my all-time favorite musician, singer-songwriter of all time...Dwight Yoakam.  If I had to listen to one musician for the rest of my time on earth, it's Dwight and it's not even close.  I used to be into music pretty hardcore but the older I get, the further I get from it.  I can appreciate most all of the genres except new rap and hip hop, yeah, I used to bump around town with Dre and Snoop through the Fosgate 15"s so I can't completely hate on rap.

Alan. my introduction to the game was with the Dodgers when they first moved to LA.
A few years later, I was figuring out how to sneak in to the new park. I got to see a few  great years of Koufax and Drysdale, Roseboro, Wills, and all of the others. A high bar.

Moved up here, for the first few years, paid only cursory attention to the A's (though they were great) but even eventually gave the Giants a try, but was so turned off to the fans' negativity towards their rivals (strictly a marketing scheme I tell you), and their shameful behavior towards Dodger fans, made me realize that like Tommy, I may proudly bleed Dodger blue. It was never "Let's go Giants" It was always "Beat LA".
It was as if the fans had given up on the first day of the season, and just wanted to spoil any chance the Dodgers may have. The fact that they took more than 50 years to finally win and the ensuing hoopla is indicative of this frustration based attitude.

Phone Company Field is nice enough though.  ;D

So, for me, it's A's and Dodgers, and I absolutely hate inter league play.

A guy from our small town recently went up to the big leagues and plays for the Giants.  Printed a bunch of giants shirts with his name and 33 on the back today for his family.

Yeah, looks like Charlie got some time in the bigs in May.

We have a local, John Baker who catches for the Padres. Drafted by the A's, played in Sacramento, traded to Miami, and is now actually getting some real time in San Diego.
He's not a kid anymore at 30 or 31 though.

So for the past eight months easy I am the first to arrive and the last to leave it is NPR or talk radio in the morning before everyone arrives (then KEXP, total $eattle Indie Rock, where we are located) and when they are gone it is everything from Molly Hatchet to New Orleans' very own EHG. Throw in Mass Gave from our buddies in Vancouver, BC and you have a very eclectic mix! Oh, and Black Flag

Jesus culture is awesome. I need to get their album yet but Thousand Foot Crutch is pretty awesome, its a mixture of heavy metal and Christian rap.

You want old school? This was the first tune coming out of the speakers here this morning. btw, it really helps to have grown up with the original by the Supremes to really appreciate this one at the time.

ahh, bad brains, been a while. . . any Hüsker Dü to go with it?

I am also surprised nobody mentioned Alison Krauss. She seems to transcend the genre barriers and I have met few that wanted nothing to do with folk or country, but loved her.

Hey Pierre!

Husker Du, new day rising gets a lot of play. Zen arcade is really good, too.

I've heard some funny stuff on Allison Krauss from a girl I used to work with.  She is Charlie and Bruce Robison's little sister and she used to tell me stories about all the local artists that she knew, which was pretty much everybody.  Bruce and Charlie are legends around here and Bruce has written some of the best songs I've ever heard, and Charlie is married to one of the Dixie Chicks and has had a decent music career.  Well, Allison used to run in that circle with Charlie and Bruce and their gang and they'd all play shows and tour together, and I heard some really good one's that I can't really repeat here on the forum.  Allison is super talented, she is very well respected and thought of highly in this part of the country.
