Title: watches . . . what are you wearing?
Post by: blue moon on May 19, 2011, 05:29:17 PM
we talked about this a while back on Preston's forum and it took of like a wildfire. Not screenprinting related, but seems like we have planty of fans.

So what's on your wrist (or dare I say, your pocket)?

I'll go first.

This is a watch from my active skydiving days. Influenced by the aircraft dials. Put it together myself. Bought the movement, serviced it, changed some pieces. Then bought the dial, hands and the case from a watch company in San Francisco. Band is from them too, but bought at a later time. Clasp is from somebody else. SO a real mutt with some nice parts to it. Swiss ETA 2836 movement (shock resistant), sapphire glass front and back (so you can see the movement). Water proof to 30 meters. Had a shark skin band on it for a while, oil skin leather now.
Total cost about $200. If you bought it at the store probably about $1K.

I wear a  Casio Pathfinder all the time. I time a lot of things.

Had a Friend's, girlfriends daughter clean house for me as a favor and among the things missing is My 25 year old Gold Longines and my ring.

Can't prove it, so its just gone.

That Sucks Biggins.

Used to wear them.  Haven't for many years.  I used to do a lot of construction and broke a lot of them.
I agree, with a cell who needs one.  I'm not much one for wearing jewlery.
When did it become fashionable to wear schrapnal on your face or streach your ear lobes out?  I think this was started by the Ubangee Tribe?
Can't understand this!

I haven't worn a watch for ages, because I worked with solvents anything plastic just melted like a Dali painting, so I wore a cheap steel watch.  Now I carry a phone everywhere and don't need one.

Johnny mentioned a pathfinder, I got one of those.  It's a cool watch.  Thermometer, altimeter, barometer, compass, it's got some gadgets on it.

I hate wearing jewelry, but for fieldwork I use a rugged Freestyle Kampus.

But sometimes when I go out to some hip bar or restaurant, I take my Ipod Nano watch:

I have a cell phone, why would i need a watch?

several reasons. One, my cell phone is not always on me, it could be in the next room.

Second and more important, watches can be something worth appreciating. Yes, they can be practical and tell time and barometric pressure and the temperature and the water depth and who knows what else. I have a CASIO G-Shock for scuba diving or any other similar activities. But on a normal day, I like to wear something that is actually a remarkable feat of engineering. In some cases also a piece of art. The level of craftsmanship involved is absolutely stunning. There are watches out there that a team of ppl took a year or more to assemble. Some of the gears are cut to the millionth of an inch tolerances and some take years to complete one rotation. The company I am big fan of, enamels the naval battles on the dial and only about one or possibly two out of ten come out acceptable to their standards (no there are no seconds). That's about three a week for world class craftsman.

There is more to life than cold hard calculated utility. Every now and then, we need to stop and smell the roses (or watches in some guy's case . . .).

While Yorkie, unfortunately nailed today's throwaway electronic gadget mentality as well, though I hope a little tongue in cheek.

I think that Apple's plan of owners tossing the otherwise elegant original hard drive I-Pods rather than replace the battery took this to a new extreme.

generally not a fan of Rolex, but DAMN! submariner IS one of my all time favorite watches!

Rolex is a feat of engineering, not craftsmanship as many ppl believe. Inside of MOST Rolexes is simple low tolerance movement, but figuring out how to make those movements keep good time and be super reliable requires engineering not many companies can match.

actually, that is not expensive. I have a couple in that price range . . . most of the high end, hand made watches start at $100K and some limited editions will pass the mil mark. I remember reading about a limited edition watch that took 3 YEARS to put together!

these guys are one of the current favorites:

Love that pic, a sub on a squeegee, awesome.

Pierre, I've heard such good things about the co-axial movement that Omega has been using. Unfortunately, I don't know as much about the movements as you do, I do know what kind of movements are in my watches but I don't know the details about them like I should.  I know the co-axial uses some sort of an escapement mechanism that causes less wear and tear and needs less maintenance over a longer period of time.  I will be giving at least 2 of my watches to my son in 20-40 years and I expect them to last that long, especially the omega and breitling.

The watch I have my eye on is the only Rolex that doesn't look ridiculous on my wrist, and it's 10K.  I know I won't be able to get that watch any time soon with the baby and all the bills we got going on, but I've thought about selling my omega and breitling to buy the rolex, but I think that would be a stupid move on my part.

I had a silver and gold Rolex Datejust that my wife got on a really good deal back around 1986.  Back then I wore that and a gold bracelet and nice ring and never thought too much about it.

But, I stopped wearing any jewelry sometime in the mid 90's and most everything was sold or disposed of.

There are just too many people, who want what they cannot have but you do, that will not think twice about blowing you away for a pawn-able item to buy their drugs.

Think "plain", unless you can take an armed bodyguard (or Homer) with you wherever you go.  Or at least that's my suggestion.

Also, wearing expensive baubles in front of your customer can do one of two things.  (1) It can show that you are a hard worker and good (and successful) at what you do.  But (2) It can also make your potential customers think your prices are inflated to pay for your trinkets.  Just my 2c.

I'm serious.  I see that all the time.  Just last week I read where someone was stabbed (killed) for a Gold Chain.

It's all about the "haves" and the "have nots".

Oh, I remember some years back where two guys followed a guy home from shopping that was wearing a Rolex and robbed him.  The guy resisted and they shot and killed him.

I guess the bottom line in this day and time is -

If you have to watch where you go and keep looking over your shoulder to see who is watching you when you're wearing nice stuff, then it's no longer fun to show you're successful in what you do.

I wear my watches without worrying about someone attacking me, but I probably should show some discretion and be more careful.  But since I'm in Texas and have my CHL, I'm packing 90% of the time so I have a false sense of safety.  I hope that nobody ever tries to take one of my watches, it's going to get ugly and it will end badly, and hopefully it won't be me who gets the bad end of the stick.

Pierre, they don't make the regular sea-dweller anymore, the smaller 40mm.  They discontinued it a year or so ago.  There are still some new ones in stores I think.

I still can't believe that no one has brought up the legendary Kromega III, and its classic tagline,
"It's like asking a stranger for the time"

The "ad" from 1977

[ lightning strikes ] A watch so complex, it takes two people to make it work. One hand wears the watch. The other hand presses the buttons that activate the 100% solid state multi-function digital quartz crystal micro-computer unit. And now, you're ready for the third hand to trigger the light-luminating dial to give you an alphanumeric readout accurate to within 9 a year. It's that simple.

KROMEGA III. Command-crafted in impact-resistant crushed chrome. It's no wonder that professional skiiers prefer Kromega III over any ordinary timepiece.

For some reason I have a distinct memory of a very forgettable non-event involving that watch or one very similar. It was mid 1970's. My family was at the theater watching Towering Inferno or Earth Quake or one of those types of movies when longer movies actually had intermissions back then. I think it may have been Earth Quake because I also remember the theater being equipped with Sensor Sound which made the whole theater shake when the quake would appear on screen.
Anyway, somebody asked this guy for the time and he had to have the person asking, to hold his drink and popcorn because he needed two hands to press the buttons on his LED watch. Even as a kid, I thought the LED watch was the coolest gadget ever but I also thought, how dumb is that, that you need two hands to tell the time. I don't know why, but that little snippet of life is burned into my memory.

I don't think I've ever seen one exactly like that in person.  I was in San Antonio over the weekend and I got to spend about 30 minutes in Tourneau trying on watches.  The analogy of a kid in a candy store was not appropriate, it was more extreme than that.  I probably tried on 15 watches, Oris, Omega, Breitling, Cartier, Bremont, U-Boat, Audemars Piquet (Royal Oak Offshore), Luminox, and a few others I've forgotten about.  I was very impressed with the Oris I tried on, it was my favorite watch, unfortunately I can't remember which model it was.

yes, Omega Speedmaster Pro. The first watch worn on the moon and until few years ago, the only NASA authorized watch for EVA (spacewalks). This is a 10 year anniversary watch from 1979. It is almost identical to the ones sold today with the exception of the bracelet and some minor tweaks in the movement. Nothing visible from the outside.

here's the scary thing, most of those are considered entry level into high end watches. Actually, not even sure any would make it (while familiar with AP, not really sure what's inside them, but my gut check would be that they are the only high end watch in there).

Oris is a great company. I have not looked at their watches in a while, but I did buy my wife one. They are one of the best bangs for the buck.

To compare it to cars (which might make some things easier to understand):
Omega is BMW
Oris would be Subaru
Cartie is Lexus
Tag is Infinity
Brietling is Acura

These are all nice, but as mentioned, they are entry level to nice cars.

IWC, JLC, Panerai, Ulysse Nardin, Vacheron, Zenith are your Ferraris, Lambos and Porsches. Usually use prefab movements that are customized. A lot of assembly line production.
Low end models here are $5k or so and they go up to $100k

Glashutte, Parmigiani, Bregute, Patek are your RR, Bently, Zonda and such . . . Mostly hand made from scratch.
They start at $10k for the very low end models and go up to a mil.

Great analogy Pierre.  Owning 2 Omegas and one Breitling, I would consider the Omega a better overall watch, and I certainly wear the Breitling more often than the Omega lately.  My taste in watches is weird, I wouldn't spend a dime on a Tag, but I'd go into deep debt for a Rolex Deepsea.  But I don't like 99% of the Rolex lineup of watches.  The Oris I tried on was $7750, so it was more than any other watch I own, but I wouldn't trade any of my 3 nicest pieces for it.

I've tried on several Zenith's and just don't like the feel of them, too much titanium for me.  If I'm wearing a 50mm watch, I'm the kind of guy that wants to know it.  I like my watches big and heavy, so I almost rule out anything with titanium.  I also would like to mention that for some reason, I just don't like Panerai.  I've tried on 3 different models and from what I've heard, you don't get them till you try them on, and I walked away unimpressed.  When I try watches on, I don't consider price until it's time to buy, so if I know I'm trying on a $20K watch, I'm stilled not going to be swayed by it's price as to what I feel about it.  As a matter of fact, my second favorite watch I tried on the other day was a Luminox Deep Diver 1500 Auto, with a price tag of only 1700.  I would much prefer to wear it over the Panarais I've tried on.  I'd much rather spend 10K for the Rolex Deepsea than the entry level Pan, but that's just my taste in watches.  I haven't seen an A. Lange and Sohne that I would wear every day, or a Patek, and they are the best watches in the world.

Okay, all you poo-pooers of wearing a watch in lieu of the ubiquitous cell phone. I was at an amusement park the other day, wearing a cheapy watch and at least 7 people (adults) asked me for the time through out the day.

I actually wear a cheapie watch, but I get so many compliments on it.

As much as I'd like too, I can't stand wearing accessories, not even a ring or a hat. Upside is this saves me money...  ;)

It's a datejust with a rotating bezel like a sub.  My dad baught it new in 74 and wore it every day for 36 years.  He passed away recently and now I wear it and always have a piece of him with me.

just bought a new watch today. Had it customized slightly, but LOVED the blue and gold glow in the dark.

Swiss ETA movement (2824), made by a local company specializing in heavy duty watches. Hand made dial, assembled in USA. Limited production 89/100. It is rather big, not gigantic, but is very large (44mm). It glows like there is no tomorrow. There is no battery in the watch and it is that bright!'have not bought a watch in many years!
