Title: Award winners plus one recent. . .
Post by: blue moon on October 04, 2012, 05:21:13 PM
rather crappy phone pix. I'll get something better when I finally come up for air, but this will give some idea of what they looked like.

all are discharge underbase (one was not, but on the consequent reprint today we changed that).
62 or 65 lpi all on 330s mesh.

all are 7 colors, BAD and Valkyrie are 4CP, Unleashed is simulated.

Pierre,

Did you do a discharge underbase then a plastisol highlight white? Your white is really white. I know photos don't represent the printed colors very well. Especially phone pics most of them alter the contrast so much the colors and whites are always over saturated.

Nice jobs. Keep up the good work. (Are you going to Vegas? I will maybe there Thursday night and Friday leaving Friday after the show.)

both dark shirts have two underbase (as do all our other award winning shirts on dark garments). The highlight white was plastisol.

So 3 whites? Highlight, discharge underbase with plastisol on top?

Yeah those are great but can I get a name put on the back and my kids number?? Do you do that?  The guy down the street adds that for free. LOL  Love em man you guys are pushing the bar for the industry outstanding!!  I often forget these are on t-shirts. Very nice.

yup!

The white is paper white and just as smooth. The BAD looks like it is printed on paper as a matter of fact. We ran the same thing with plastisol the first time around and the difference is HUUUUGE!

Looks like the one with discharge made the guy fat. Mental note discharge makes you fat.

Hey Pierre, just great as always. Do you mind if I ask if your 2 underbase whites are a duo-tone for greater dynamic range? Very nice prints.

Pierre which one has the DC UB? BTW the duo-tone UB was pioneered by Mark Coudray and gives greater tonal range. Very well done buddy!

both black shirts have two underbases. As Tony said, it gives a much wider tonal range. The first UB is actually very weak and usually gray rather than white. The second one sits on top of the gray and provides true white to print on (where it's needed).
If using just one screen, it is hard to put down enough ink to get a solid white or if you do it, the fine detail is overblown.

Thanks man I thought so. This is very important for the purists and expertly illustrates how the DC UB significantly increases smoothness and resolution. I've touched on this before with poorer examples. Many are drawn to DC for the soft hand but are slowly beginning to realize how it delivers other added value. Enlarge the pic and you will clearly see the difference.
Again well done and thanks for sharing

I love all of them but the skin tone on the Valkyrie is stunning.  Did you nail it quickly or did it take a while to get her skin right?

all of the prints look 10 times better in person. Her skin tone is unbelievable and is much more realistic than the sunburn looking pix I posted (she does have a tan, but it is not as dark as in the image). We originally sampled this on a white shirt and just for shits and giggles threw it on a light blue. It looked pretty good and than we found one that really made the image pop. It was worth switching so we reseparated and resampled.  In both cases we sampled for about an hour.
The funny part is, only one company makes that particular shade of blue and it actually cost us an award as there is weave interference and we could not get a clean print. If Anvil made the same color shirt, it could have been a grand champion! It is that good.

Question I did an DC UB and printed plastisol on top and the print was great! but it cracked when pull...what you adding to stop that from happen Pierre.

Undercured. Flash the DC UB till most of the water is steamed out but don't discharge all the way. Slow the dryer down.

Darryl

I did a discharge underbase and it didn't crack. Did wet on wet no flash. I think it has alot to do with how thick you lay the top colors down. The main reason for cracking is undercured. Other reasons is the wrong percentages of base. Too much white in the base and it will crack. Also if you drench the shirt with discharge ink it will take longer to get the shirt to cure. I am still new at this but with everything what works for me on my set up and dryer maybe different for you. (I'm in arizona so the shirts dry faster in the dry heat)

Pierre again nice work. I didn't know you were using discharge. I am starting to see the advantages to this stuff. Like Tony points out.

Thanks, got to learn mixing inks again like I did when we use to pad print, I love working with discharge it brings a whole new ballgame to the print setup and how you work your art.

Big grins.
Choice work!
( Seeing this makes me wonder why I bother printing, but then again, it's also very inspirational )

Can we see some close ups?
Like..close enough to see shirt mesh and ink?
( Lots of folks don't like doing that, but, I'm a pr*ck anyways, so I'll ask. )

Regardless, awesome work!
Thanks.

pierre,

I don't see the weave in your photos. Are these on a 40/1 or some type of fashion shirt. I have never printed a 4CP on an AA shirt yet. (people don't have the money for both) but I bet that makes a great print even better.

you can see the weave in the dragon photo.
Alstyle was not a shirt I would print 4CP on again due to the interference.  It is a nice shirt, but 'would stick with less complicated prints.
Dragon is on an Anvil 490 (best printing shirt we've found) and the BAD is on a Beefy T (printed better with DC for some reason).

On all of those shirts, the art, seps and setup come up to many hundreds of dollars, potentially even a K. Ppl that are willing to spend that kind of money are usually looking for a good quality shirt!

About a K for the set up. That's nice but I wouldn't even want one of those picky a$s customers in my shop. A customer like that can either take you to the next level or run you out of business. Great work. I would like to see the shirts in person. If your going to Vegas make sure to bring them.

I've said it before, it is Direct To Dan!!!!

sorry not making it Vegas, but the shirts are there in the competition. You'll get a chance to see the BAD and Dragon.

To reiterate Tony's point about smoothness and resolution here are a two pics of a job from a couple of days ago for example.

First the plastisol UB:

Your pic shows it's indeed smoother and indeed colors are even a tiny bit brighter.  I can also see and appreciate the slight difference in depth of garment color use and how the red falls to the shirt color and creates additional tone in the mouth area. Slight difference between the plastisol and discharge, but it's there. I can appreciate that.

Thanks for posting.
