I don't have employees, but when I was one, union or not, yes, major holidays were paid.

Otherwise, for a working person, holidays become a financial burden rather than the celebration for which they are intended, though granted, now you have the burden. Oh well, I believe that it does come with the territory.

I'm going to say, of course we do. All major holidays are paid. Temp help, like for the summer, not included, but full time permanent employees, of course.

Steve

I've had employees for almost 20 years, and I treat them the way I wanted to be treated when I was one.

Don't matter who they are or how long they've worked for you. You've taken on the responsibility of employing and should pay holidays.

As Andy said, not being paid a holiday is a burden sometimes.

I remember being told as a young artist:

Get to work when we tell you and if you want extra for the extra hours or the holiday find another job...

Yep, they sucked hard...

Several were much better some BION were worse!

I employ myself now, I get breaks when I can take them (seems like fewer days off all the time - and people ask me why I don’t hustle for more work - holy smokes! I like SOME sleep).

BTW - laws vary from state to state you can check them yourself on-line.

Yes, we pay certain holidays.  I think we have 7 paid days off a year.  Full timers only.

The downside is we offered benefits, but with the last 2 years, premiums have over doubled and we had to drop our health insurance.  We gave people a bump in pay to cover finding their own or going on their spouse's plan.  I really hated doing that, but we had to.

If you don't mind, what are your 7 paid holidays??

Not to answer for Brad (mk 1 62) but the usual ones are for everyone are
New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Easter, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.
I don't know how places like ours would deal with Easter, being a Sunday, so maybe a swap with Good Friday?

-or- replace Easter with Christmas eve.

Easter isn't on our list, I don't remember it at all growing up, except it started a week's vacation. New Year's Day, then MLK, then President's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. That's 8, are we too nice? We pay 60% health insurance too. It used to be more, but it's getting so high, that we had to up the employee contribution, which fortunately, they all understand.

Our paid holidays are.  New Years Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Friday after Thanksgiving, Christmas Day.  Total of 7 days.  Plus paid vacations, plus health care.  No wonder it's so tough to make money.

I'm glad we have this board. I've never had a job that had paid holidays and hence would never have done that for
employees. I had no idea. Doh!

In the summer time we have the usual paid off holidays but we always work Saturdays anyways so it just turns into a normal weekend for everyone!

We pay the usual 7 holidays plus a week after Christmas. We have 2 female employees and we also pay them for sick leave, funerals or whatever they need off for the kids. The girl that has been with us for over 10 years has only missed work 2 days due to illness. I treat them fair and they give me equal or better in return......
They also get 2 weeks paid vacation and half of there BC & BS health paid......

Oh, we do have paid sick days, I give off the week after Christmas and I kick some cash their way to cover the long break.
