I would love to see us share pics of our shops and share how we have things set up. I always see something that sparks my interest and later implement it in my shop. I have only been in my space about 3 months but have totally redone everything. I will take some pics when I get back from the ISS tomorrow afternoon.

In would, but alas, I'm merely an artist. ::)

A little tour of my (somewhat)controlled chaos.

Yea, it's messy.
Office is on the second floor and the magic screen room is on the third.
-
OK... My turn. I just moved into this space in Jan of this year. When I moved in it was in horrible disrepair. Ceilings were dropping, no lighting, old pitted concrete floors and EVERYTHING was painting dark blue! I have been taking my time redoing each room one by one.
My main press room.....

My washout room. Washout booth on the right is for reclaiming screens and the one on the left is for washing out my new screens....

Ink mixing station....

Emulsing station....

Registration table and my old Harco exposure unit...
This room is a supply room right now but will be my heat press and numbering room after this week...

My office. This room was all painted ugly yellow... We did the paint and floors and built a wrap around desk system. I still draw a lot by hand so my drawing table is in this room....

That's not a screen shop, that's a fricking hospital. ;)

that looks great!
would you care to come and build some stuff around my place?

I am a neat freak. I cannot work if it is messing around me. This space is coming along slowly but surely. I want to clean the supply room up this week, hang some squeegee holders and some vinyl racks. I run a large motorcycle forum and a guy just made me a neon sign with my websites logo for my shop. It is 4 foot long and I am going to hang it over my drawing station. And everyone has to have s pinball machine!
-
BANG! That is an awesome print shop. Very clean. Don't know if it should stay that way 100% tho. You know what they say, "a cluttered desk represent a cluttered mind....but what then does an empty desks represent? LOL. You need to get some lint on those presses and floors. letter fly.
-
If you told me that you have a pinball machine there, I would stick around a bit more. I do not know how I have missed that.
BTW, very nice place you got there. I was pleasantly surprised when I stopped by. You are missing some shirts on the walls and some ink splatter on the floors and you will be good to go. :)
-
Very nice, but needs a coffee pot to "get going" and a dorm fridge to "unwind" . . .
-
Check the last pic.... Fridge is between the drawing table and the pinball machine.... Coffe machine is on top of it! Always goodies in the friedge for late night print sessions!

This is a typical day, I shot these pics yesterday afternoon. We try and sweep it down on Friday afternoons but sometimes we're printing till 5 so it might get a bit dirtier than this. I will try and take some more pics today.
-
I have shop envy. ::)

Here is a few pics of our screen area. You can only see about one half the area it looks tight as hell in the pics but believe it or not it has more room than it seems. As you can see we have a wet area only, all ink and procedures are done in one area all finish stuff is in one area. The huge table is a must we use it to stack off the oven end and if they have to go back for a second location we slide them over.
Oh by the way i repiped the oven i was using the flexi pip temporarily till everything was set in place.

Hey Inkman
Where is the Devil? He usually pops-up next to the blue/yellow press :@)
Nice place you got there, fix the pallets :) and keep going..........
-
Being the devil i assume he is inside the oven and only pops out for short periods but has to return to keep his flaming aura alive.
-
WOW - these shops look REALLY GOOD!! I love to see creative minds doing this thing we call printing. All your layouts are very nice. Some shops are just SPOTLESS - AMAZING.
I'll get some pictures of our place and try to figure out how to post them.

I just found something. . . this is the press corner. through the door is the warehouse and access to the exposure unit and washout area. The left side has a double door and a bunch of tables for staging. The dryer is going through the wall into the warehouse.

Inkman,
Which Vastex dryer is that? ECII 54?
How does it keep up with the auto? I have an ECII 30 and wondering if I will have to expand or replace it when the auto is going (by the end of this month I hope).
I'll put some pics up too in a few.

Ah, another old dryer from American. It was a shame to lose them.
I run a Phoenix myself.
Your dryer going through the wall brings up memories of larger horizontal Cameras.

Yep its the 54". We stack three wide on it if necessary to keep up, tho i think we topped it out at about 700pcs an hour on the new press. I think that is adequate for us rarely would we ever need to print faster than that. Other than that its a fantastic dryer for the price, tracking is perfect!

Man Nice Shops.
What are the cordless drills for?
-
I have a vortex mixer. I whip my high opacity white with prior to using it. It makes it buttery smooth!

I was told by on eof the ink manufacturers not to use a drill on the inks. His comment was the friction on molecular level causes the ink to start curing and thus becomes harder. He suggested mixing by hand.
For the most part, that makes sense, but some of the athletic gold (with bleed additive) is just so freakin' hard, that just use the drill.

My understanding was the problem would be the heat produced (from the friction), so keep it slow
-
Yeap... I keep it really slow. I work it for about 5 minutes prior to using the ink. My white was always so stiff it was a pain.... so bad I dreaded printing white! Tomorrow I have 160 front and backs to do in all white and I am looking forward to it!

We are running the same dryer and have no problems, like Inkman had over 700pph and every one came out fine. When we moved up to the new press we were going to get the two chamber Econored II 54" for the auto and move the old one back to the manuals. We ended up leaving the 54" with the auto and buying a smaller one for the manuals.

I'd just hit it with the air hose and blow the lint off the press and onto everything else. One problem solved, another problem started.
Are you keeping that auto clean?

I'll try to post pics maybe next week. Hint: It aint as pretty as those above but it's pretty friggin busy.
I am in Cinqo de Mayo hell. About 30,000 shirts front and back. Eight designs with.........at last count............
220 restaurant namedrops. Sometimes same namedrop with different address. Oh and you can have your namedrop full front or left chest in your choice of color. Or a sleeve perhaps. And wait...La Frontera just called and added more shirts is that OK to re-set up? And of course everyone else has ramped up big time as per usual. So we are in a sea of boxes maybe you'll get a glimpse of the presses.
Seriously though those are some nice clean layouts must be nice!
Cheers tp

I'd love to see Tony's operation, I bet it's chaotic but most of us have never seen a shop with that much going on inside.

Meet your chisel:
http://www.realmilkpaint.com/citrus.html
This stuff removes all but the most baked on spray tack and lint.
Put cardboard on the floor under the press. Wipe down one part at a time generously with the citrus solvent. Wait a bit. Scrub off with a nylon brush and/or Scotchbrite pad. Finish cleaning with a few sprays of Simple Green. Re-lube any bearings.
Spotless.
(wear gloves!)
My press was the sample press in a big shop but was almost never cleaned. You can practically eat off it now.
-
i used a citrus solvent on it before but it ended up smearing the logo on the leg - i guess it was too powerful so i stopped. i'd like to give it another shot of cleaning though--thanks for the link!!
i didnt realize there was a horizontal scrollbar on brandts pics, now they make more sense...lol

It's odd having equipment that gets cleaner from the time it entered your shop. My press is almost there.

I don't use them myself. Can't leave wb ink on the squeegees so mine get washed, dried and stacked.

Yep its the 54". We stack three wide on it if necessary to keep up, tho i think we topped it out at about 700pcs an hour on the new press. I think that is adequate for us rarely would we ever need to print faster than that. Other than that its a fantastic dryer for the price, tracking is perfect!
Wow!! 700/hr!? That's great! We advertise 500/hr, it's great to hear of that high of numbers!! We need someone with one of our new BigRed's to try and max it out like that!

Anything you see screen printed on our equipment is an air dry ink. It really does not hold up well to any solvents. Unfortunately, the powder coated metal isnt' the easiest thing to get a durable logo to stick to. The rest of the machine should hold up well to the cleaning solvents though. Definitely be sure to grease all of those micro knob threads, and put some oil down the center shaft. Also, watch out for the gas shocks. Getting spray tack on them will prematurely wear them out. The spray tack builds up on the shaft and then blows the seal out. I've seen people cut the fingers off of latex gloves and use them to protect the shaft of the gas shock.

i used a citrus solvent on it before but it ended up smearing the logo on the leg - i guess it was too powerful so i stopped. i'd like to give it another shot of cleaning though--thanks for the link!!
Hey Mike glad to see you on hear. This is Tee It Up over in Connecticut.
You get 700 an hour but thats small to medium size prints and layered three wide on the belt, it takes a good unloaded as well to do it.

Alan802,
What kind of building is that? How expensive is something like that to have built? Is that one of those pre-fab metal buildings?
Thanks for posting those pics by the way. interesting to see.

Yea it works great for dried screens. I had to put up little divider bars in the middle of the rack otherwise it was touch to get at the different mesh sizes.

What is up with that drier? Its scary as hell looking.

Glad you brought this back up... now that we are about 75% in swing I should show my little cave of a space.
Stitching kind of sucked on this panoramic shot but you get it.
-
This are still in disarray... we like our chemicals huh (under press)! They are empty bottles we just picked up (Zeps!) ;)
Pallet dolly needs to make its way back into the Connex box, but they they wife couldn't ride it around while talking to us. PVC pipe on the left is supposed to be vinyl rack that gets hung on another wall and we have an 8' counter/cabinet going along that wall as soon as the guy brings it (brand new and free, so I'm not complaining about time of delivery!)
Ignore my King Air "exhaust vent" hanging in the middle of the picture... this was before we had the proper dryer vent put in just to get the heat out of the room.

But I assume your referring to the pellon's taped to the end that kind of make it look like a mouth....not really sure the purpose of those but they've always been on there and we actually change them out every once and awhile......
Nick
-
Vintage Hix! I've had a couple of those. Pretty basic & reliable machines. That one looks like it's probably an 80's era dryer. Someone probably put those pellons over the outfeed to try to hold a bit more heat in, as the Hixes have really tall openings. You could slap a piece of sheet tin on there for about $5.00 if escaped heat is a problem.

I've seen worse, hell my shop is just junky I'm a pack rat

My Gog Nick I hope you don't get fire marshall inspections lol
I agree! Most people just don't' understand how bad of a shop this really is! I'm am always in shock when I see other shops! I know all it takes is a little TLC but this place has been neglected for so many years, not sure if there is any sort of chance for recovery. And then the owners wonder why we have so many problems.
I've sent a couple of days before cleaning and wiping things down and then the employees come in an it's right back to where is was before, so I kind of stopped.
When I started my office was a HUGE mess! Couldn't even see the desk! I have since cleaned it up and tend to clean it, at least a wipe down, once a week!
man my phone takes crappy pics!
But I won't continue on here about this place, this is supposed to be a "show off" thread.....see my other post for rants and complaints. ;)

Alan that place is screaming for a second press what are you waiting for ;D
-
Alan, is your exposure unit out in the main warehouse area? (Looks like it is) Do you have a lot of ambient light?
It would make things way easier on me to do the same.
-
Alan, is your exposure unit out in the main warehouse area? (Looks like it is) Do you have a lot of ambient light?

It's a few steps from the dark room. We bring the screens out and tape film up then put them on the exposure unit. They are in the shop light for under a minute and we've never had any issues. I wouldn't put it across the shop or anything but right outside the darkroom and you shouldn't have any problems. We use pure photopolymers so they are more sensitive to the ambient light but still have no issues.
-
Yeah, it's not that big a deal. Figure it takes 20 minutes for a screen to properly expose when it's 4 inches from a fluorescent tube -- it'd take an hour or two sitting around on the floor of a shop for it to ruin. I always just come at it with an abundance of cation so that I have plenty of margin for error, but a walk across the room with a screen won't ruin one.
-
Unfortunately we have a skylight directly above the screen room exit. Might have to block it off or get some kind of retractable
blinds or something. I'm assuming the light coming in the shop door isn't a problem? I'd guess that TX sun is about the same
if not stronger than CA sun.
Before I had any type of pre-reg system I used to take the screen and put it in the head on the press where
it would go, center films and apply that way. I actually had one or two screens expose in the minute or
two that it took.
Do you develop in the shop area as well?

Alan, earlier in this thread you said this was your table for prepping and taping screens.......do you guys use packing tape to tape off your screens??
Nick
-
Rocfrog, your Hix is basically a box inside a box, the inside box is the heated chamber, the outside box is the vented portion which includes vent hoods over each end. The inside box should have gates at each end you can raise or lower to suit whatever you're putting through there. They may be pushed all the way up, and nobody has ever looked in there and pulled them down. Let me know if you need a picture to clear up what I'm talking about.
Alan..... I want your dryer.

The screen print divison. behind it are 42 heads embroidery. The other half are offices, conference rooms, show rooms, blah blah. The other half of the bldg has a second floor for Gravity and sales

Ha! ;D I'm not trying to show anyone up, but I'm proud of what we've done. I've done my time in the garage -- started from the ground up more than once. Printed on a manual in my one-car garage for 4 years before the first shop expanded. When I started my last company in '92, I was using borrowed equipment & literally bought 1 squeegee, 1 gallon of black & 20 wood frames. Took the cash from that job, bought three more squeegees, and quarts of red, yellow & blue so I could print the 4-color job I'd sold.

Do you washout in the shop area as well?
Yeah, washout is right around the corner, about 5 paces from the exposure unit. The sun in the late evening in the winter time will come in through the bay door and can expose some screens while your washing them out if you let them sit for too long. We usually have the bay door down that time of year though so it's rarely an issue.
Roc, it's a 3" rubber adhesive tape that's on that table. Tons of brands of that type of tape and ours isn't labeled so I'm not sure who the manufacturer is.

That is how I started. everything I have bought is from profits from the shop. I took on my first dark shirt order without a flash unit. I had to use a heat gun to print flash print. Shortly after that I had the $300 to buy a used flash off of craigslist. Then a year later I sold that flash unit for $400. After I had enough money for a new press and flash. I have actually profited on all the equipment that I have used. Made $200 more than I paid for my first press and dryer used it for 2 year. Sold my second dryer for a profit of $400 after using it for about 2 years. This is a business you have to buy low and sell high. There is more than one way to get to the top.

Thanks much, it's a heater/fan unit which has baffling on the inside of the cabinet. Then it has a fan on the very bottom which pulls the air through and out the bottom. Its nothing that was engineered which we built in a day but it works so it does us well.

I cringe at the thought of moving again this December. We need to get closer to Atlanta for walk in customers.
Once everything is moved, ill agree organizing can be quite gratifying once things start coming together. Especially for me knowing that only 8 months ago we were operating illegally out of my 700 sqft basement :P
-
It's also the only way to really shake the lint off everything. It's amazing what will appear from under equipment that's been sitting in the same place for years. I hate clutter & I hate grime & grunge, so having a spiffy clean work area is another benefit of moving, however fleeting it may be.
-
Brannon, walk ins aren't bad, but they aren't great either. You will probably waste more time on them. A good website, plus making delivery runs might be your best bet.

LOL!! guys I know.......I just wish I could motivate a few people to help clean/up keep this place.....
I am confused, you are running the shop correct?
OK not busting your balls to much but c'mon! If you cant motivate them then make them do it. Implement times for cleaning, for instance at my shop end of day Friday is a big cleaning day. Things like wiping down the press and other equipment, thorough sweeping (under everything) Vaccing, you name it. Its really not that much time because we keep up on it, if a shop went months with out a cleaning then yes the initial time will take a while.
Instruct your employees on procedures such as wiping off ink if they spill even a drop. Make a proper home for every single item that is used in the shop, and I do mean every single things. Don't cut corners here other wise chaos will prevail, instruct your employees to make sure everything is put away before the day ends. Seriously all these little things takes only minutes and it is worth it.
You have mentioned you are slow right now, what a perfect time to get a real deep clean done and some organizing, and then follow that up with instructions for your employees on how to keep it that way.
-
I joined Dynamic Designs in 2001, we had a 6 /8 Javelin auto, a Hopkins 6/4 manual, a Harco Number Printer and a CAPS 4/4. I'll show this set first and then a couple more sets from our first expansion to where we are at present. Man, check out those wood frames! ;D

Not technically....... technically the other person here is the "manager", I'm just the artist. I'm just the guy with all the great ideas. but realistically there is no structure here, it's not like a "real" work environment more like a "good ol boy" shop.....

Not technically....... technically the other person here is the "manager", I'm just the artist. I'm just the guy with all the great ideas. but realistically there is no structure here, it's not like a "real" work environment more like a "good ol boy" shop.....
Nick
Sounds like you have the drive and motivation and the Manager does not. Take matters in to your own hands and force him to either shape up or lose his job to you.
-
Rocfrog, dude I just had to laugh :D at your shop pics nothing about the equipment, I just wonder how do you keep the shirts clean...don't worry I had to clean my shop it was dust bunny heaven.

This would be a correct statement! I'm trying to get some control/footing/changes but unfortunately the owners have a similar mentality as the "manager".....

I take no offense to any comments made, you all are just restating what I've been saying everyday for the last two years! Surprisingly the shirts stay clean, well depending on the employee that we have at the time.....

The ink storage room. Formulas printed and labeled on containers for quick re-mixing
-
One of my slow-time activities the week after new year's was to go through the ink shelf & pull out all the cans with scrawling on them & get them properly labelled with the pantone # in big bold print, & the formula below it. Took about 4 days, but I was soooo happy to have that done. One of my new year's resolutions is 100% documentation -- all ink formulas, all print orders & mesh counts for every job, & a sample print. We were at about 50% on sample prints & maybe 75% on set-up sheets & ink formulas last year, but I think my team is behind me. Going great so far this month.

Nick, you need to step on some toes and piss some people off and get that shop on the right track. Trust me, you are the right guy to do it and it will only make your job easier and more enjoyable in the long run. Once the owners see more work being done in half the time they'll start to figure it out. And if they don't, you'll have the knowledge and the experience to get into a better shop. Our shop was a mess when I got here and over the years I had to piss some people off but it was all worth it. There are days where I don't even have to set foot out in the shop if I don't want to because everything is running correctly and efficiently. Your shop can get there quickly if your guys will buy-in. That's actually the hardest part, getting others to understand the benefits and believe in the changes being made.

First off thank you for all your help in educating me thru this process. But I agree with you 100%! I'm going to try and get this shop to realize whats going on and hopefully point them in the right direction.
I had no idea when I took this job that I would end up LOVING this industry and now want this to be my "career". I have been working for sometime now to put a plan in place to have my own shop/business doing this, not sure when exactly that will get off the ground, if my plans go right it should be by years end. So in the mean time I'll use this place as a learning/testing facility and hopefully in the long run it'll improve their process/quality along the way. Trust me there isn't a day that goes by that I bring up something new or something that I have noticed, it just most of the time gets over looked or only heard but never followed thru with.....

Not to send the wrong message, but what you need to do for the owners is the same thing you'd need to do if you were running a shop you owned. You should be compensated accordingly.... or at least keep in mind that you could be taking "ownership" of the shop from a responsibility standpoint, and not realizing the benefits of doing so.
Squeaky wheel gets the grease, with what you've shown here so far that shop is in desperate need of a general manager, if you're it, make sure they know. Make sure they acknowledge the increase in quality and throughput you're likely to achieve, or make sure you know you could be doing the same thing for yourself and growing your own net worth instead of theirs.
Maybe set some goals with them, and (with great tact) outline expected compensation if they are achieved. It may be impossible to do once you get the ball rolling in the right direction.
just saying........

I've read and reread this several times now and I'm not 100% sure what your saying.....
But from what I can read from that is.....
Yes if I had any kind of "say so" or "control" this would definitely be run differently. One of the major problems here is the lack of structure, discipline, control, or anything like an actual job. I have been "in charge" at several places I have worked to include running several business and it was easy to get people to do what needed to be done because A) you hire quality employees that are somewhat qualified for the position they are applying for and B) I could "write people up" for not following instructions or procedures. None of that happens here.....small example....last year we had an employee blatantly stealing from the company in a HUGE way and the owner didn't want to fire him because they didn't know who would run the auto press, so they kept him on for two more months until they hired someone else, the whole time not saying a word to the employee about what he had done! We have had 14 employees come thru this shop in the two years I've been here and they have all quit usually with out notice at lunch time.....
As far as compensation for what I produce here and improvements that I have made....that doesn't happen here, not even a "wow, you were right! Great job!". I would be happy with just the acknowledgement of how much better this shop is since I've started. The sales people every once in awhile make a comment on how much better it is to deal with screen print and me as the artist, but that's about it......
I feel I'm just rambling on about this place and feel bad about doing it. It is really hard to explain how this place is run/operates to people that do not work here because there is a lot of "common since" business practices that are the "normal" in any work place that just doesn't apply here......

Sorry for beating around the bush....
I'm saying you're going to be fixing their business and should be paid accordingly or you should take a hard look at starting your own shop, as they would be great competition (in the sense that they suck) and would make you look good with what you are learning here.
To fix their set-up you'll be working as hard as you would setting up your own shop.
Thread hijack over ;D

I agree with you 100%! But unfortunately I still need a paycheck, which is why I've been kind fo working on it in my time off......hopefully soon.
Now back to the thread topic! LOL!!
I forgot a shot of our "dark room"!

Your dark room or where ever one keeps their cleaned and coated screens should be relatively clean. Ink transfers so easily and ruins screens and clothes. I know you are in tight quarters but surely one could keep so much ink out of that area.

That's not ink....that emulsion...

We had gotten rid of our Javelin, we were now running a Gauntlet 8/10 and a Sportsman 6/8. The Harco numbering press was replaced with an Inline numbering press. I believe these pics were taken in 2004.

Very astute observation Jedi. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt in that it was a low quantity job, less than 100 pieces and running it around twice was faster than developing, taping, registering, tearing down and reclaiming an additional screen!!! Those boys know what they're doing, they don't need me meddling in their business :)
-
Ahaha! Revolver? :-[....ok, guilty as charged, small quantity. In this case, quicker than messing around with dialing in registration on four vs. three screens. When I was done with that job it was back on to that Sportsman in the first picture, running a 40,000 piece order, and that I can assure you was not in revolver mode. ;D

We got a little extra space ;D

Ok I have read this term on here several times now and I don't know what it means.....What is "revolver mode"? And why is it "bad"?

My office is in the front of our space without a view of the shop, this is where cameras come in handy.

From the M&R website FAQ:
What is the "Revolver" Print Program?
M&R’s patented Revolver Print Program enables M&R press owners to get the most out of their presses by allowing the press to make multiple revolutions on a design that may require more print and flash stations than are available on the press. Revolver is especially helpful on 6 and 8-color presses. Revolver allows printing in every head while flash curing at the unload station. Even larger presses benefit from the Revolver program. For example, on a 12-color press running a 10-color job with two flash cures to handle specialty inks that must be flashed three times, the revolver can print 3 colors; flash; then print 4 colors and flash on the first revolution. On the second revolution, the press can print 2 more colors and flash before printing the final color.
Countless other scenarios are well within Revolver’s reach.
It is bad because Alan's machine doesn't have it and he is extremely jealous. ;D No... but seriously, it is bad because it can be very time consuming running the press in that mode.
-
Revolver allows printing in every head while flash curing at the unload station.
Whoa! I did not know revolver gave the option of flashing at the unload. That is straight baller. Not only could you get max colors on your press where needed but a single op could just hang back and pull some manual prints or grab and stack shirts while it's making it's second spin...or just stand there and sip beer.
Also, yer press can switch from 6/8 to 7/8 without major effort, i.e. right now I'm looking at a 6/8 with a dedicated flash in head 2, (so it's basically a 7/8 with no choppers in head 2) and wondering if I'll ever be kicking myself without that unload station on certain jobs.
I'm sure any press could do this flash in the unload routine by manually setting it up but how convenient to have it programmable.

I have been lurking at the TSB for a while now. :) Had nothing to offer but have learned a great deal. I am new to the screen printing world two years ago. Purchased a small shop. We have since replaced the Precision Oval with a new RPM. Along the way we remodeled our space which is in an old bakery. Any way here are the picts.

Hello Matt,
Thanks for posting and jumping in. Glad to have you on board.
Pics 2,3,4,5 are all the same so I'll take all but one off and rotate the two.
When you take a pic sideway with your camera, it stays that way unless you rotate them in a program and re-save.
If you've got additional "different" pics, I'll do the same on those.
Thanks
Dan

It's painful being new !!
I do have other picts so maybe I'll try to post them instead of 4 of the same!
Thanks Dan

Ok so here is a couple of more that I had intended to post the first time around. Hopefully I rotated them and did this correctly.
