Title: Scanners- What do we need, what do you have?
Post by: Frog on January 24, 2013, 10:03:18 AM
My old Acer will not work with Windows 7. Either will a Canoscan I also have.
The Acer was cheap ($50) and worked great.
Except for oversize models, I see plenty out there at $100 and less. Comments? Suggestions?

You can often find good deals on used scanners by checking Craigslist. I bought a nice Epson scanner for $15. I only use it a few times a month so I didn't want to spend the money on a new one. Quality has come a long way since portable scanners first came out...and I'd say that for our purposes most any brand will work fine.

i agree with RIP, it's amazing how much better they have gotten.  Heck, you could probably even go all-in-one.  I do that now for my faxing, job tickets and scanning.  Works great.  (it's a color laser.

I have an all-in-one wireless. So I can scan it to my desktop or laptop. It is connected to a wireless router.

There is one problem with the all-in-one. If one person is printing, you won't be able to scan.

We LOVE our WF-4530, for printing!

It does scan and scans well... but it scans SLOW.  Not really a huge deal for some, like if you don't scan often, but it can be annoying knowing that it should be faster.

I use an old Epson 1640 XL, tabloid size, beautiful scans. I run it with VersaScan software from Hambrick (or is it Hamrick?)

Steve

oh yeah, about $250 from eBay. Dirt cheap for tabloid size

Isnt their a way to bypass the scanner software itself and just use the Windows Twain no matter what age the scanner is? I recall having to do this once with an older large format scanner.

I have this one.
It is pretty good. Scans, copies and prints up to 13x19 (It might be scanning only up to 11x17)

Sometimes there is a software fix.  I found something for my epson that allowed me to continue to use it.  Maybe something else will work for yours.

Maybe this?

It doesn't list the price anywhere though. I'd hate to get hooked on a trial, only to find out that it costs more than a newer scanner (tabloid size excluded of, course)

the program I use is Epson Scan.  I think it's made by epson to replace the drivers on older scanners.  It's easier than updating all the drivers.

I don't know if mine is a fluke, but I have a Mustek A3 scanner that sucks.  Not only does it scan gibberish every other time, it actually somehow manages to screw up other USB devices on the computer.   Only got it running on XP--Win7 driver won't install.

Old HP junk never gave me trouble, besides occasionally cleaning the dust off the inside of the glass.

It was about $80 I think... I bought it originally for an old HP I have at home which is about 12 years old. And it runs on a new Mac I bought last summer. He also answers emails rather quickly.
