This is mostly for the Google machine and people searching for these. I think Steve is the only
other guy on here that uses these style lamps, though something similar from the same company
might be worthwhile. (It's my understanding that medium wave style lamps are the superior type for
plastisol)
At any rate, I found a supplier for something compatible. They make them here in the 'ol USA, and the price
for 6 pieces (min order) is almost half the cost of 1 from Calmat.
No details yet, I'll check in and post it when I have them in hand and tested, don't want to brag and then have egg on
my face. But if you're in a bind, PM me.

Sean,
Please keep me in the loop on the bulbs, are you using MSI flash units?
-
I have two Calmat QC20, they're older.
Just bought two MSI's, they'll be here Thursday and I'm stoked!
-
I have a calmat. I have 6 older bulbs that I got with it and 3 that I got from Hirsch. The ones from hirsch are not as bright as the originals. The hirsch ones were around $100 each. I know the original ones are like $500 each or something like that, if you can find them. Please let us know they work. Mine all do fine but if they are that cheap and the hotter ones I am a buyer when I need them.

I don't think anything but the original old Calmat's use this type.
They have a ribbon instead of a coiled metal element, gold reflector, are
~100 volts so two are wired in series for 240 voltage. (IE one goes out both goes out)
Brighter may actually mean not as hot, as in more energy to visible light as opposed to heat.
I'll keep it updated though!

Interesting never thought about that. I just did a test you you maybe right. The placement of the elements (under fan vs end of the unit) may have played a role but the duller ones were hotter each reading I did.

We've replaced one of the Calmat's with the MSI (wow) and now have 6 extra bulbs for the remaining Calmat, but eventually, another MSI will find it's way here.

So the MSI is better than the Calmat? Just asking in case that is not common knowledge among MHM users and future MHM buyers.
On the subject of bright bulbs versus non bright, I can say with certainty that our old style bulbs were bright as hell but do not gel the ink as fast as the duller, newer style bulb. I haven't put the temp gun on them but it was noticeable when I changed out our first flash unit to all new bulbs and the second flash has all of the old style bulb. When running both flashes the second one is super bright and the first flash is barely noticeable.

We'll know today!
The Calmat's are single phase, which was a necessity at my old shop. They use a carbon ribbon ($$$) type element instead of coiled metal like most
other flashes. I think that this style probably allows the most heat per watt, they're a real dull orange.
That said, they're about 2000 watts less power than the MSI's. So we'll see.
Do most other quartz flashes use bulbs with a reflective coating?

MSI vs Calmat
Rodney told us that the Calmat is faster. Which was surprising to us as the units we have are pretty slow.
The original thread started here talks about two different types of bulbs. We bought the cheaper ones from Hirsch and thought there might be an issue. I emailed Calmat directly and was assured that the new bulbs are THE NEW bulbs and are the way to go.
go figure . . .

We need a scientist on board.
It's my understanding that what we want is medium-wavelength bulbs, whose spectrum is best suited to curing plastisol
quickly.
The long wavelength bulbs have more visible light (or maybe it's shortwave? I dunno) and less heat. This can of course
be overcome by using more or higher wattages.
The Calmat's have a gold reflector surface on the inside of the lamp. Add's to cost, but makes sense. No point in heat going
up.
The place I'm ordering these bulbs from mentioned a ceramic reflective coating. %90 as effective as gold, lasts longer
and costs less. Sold.

I'd be curious to find out if they work better than what we have now!

Calmat's replacement bulbs are out of sight cost wise, that's what got us to change finally, plus one Calmat unit just kept having minor issues. A new Calmat was $4500 when we bought it way back when (8 or 9 years ago now) and we paid $3000 for the MSI.
Steve
I still think you'll be happy with the Calmat; the one we have that's still in service has been almost trouble free. We've replaced a couple of plugs as they heat up and cool down and the connections work lose and arc...
