Title: Time to shut it down
Post by: Sbrem on February 08, 2013, 12:33:51 PM
Huge storm on the way, everybody's going to die!!!!!!! OK, maybe that's a bit much, but... Sam, Mike, Shane and the rest of us up here in the NE, leave early. Back in '78 a few of us got stuck out there (not me).

Just got home myself. Have everything all charged up and ready, took the crisper out of the fridge filled it with water and placed it outside, if power goes out I will have a block of ice to put in the fridge.

Been snowing since I got up maybe five inches accumulated so far and the storm is not even here yet. Predicting two feet for us but Steve and Sam looks like you guys may get 30 or more inches yikes .

Stay safe everyone stay off the roads anyways. Unless your Sam and need to plow.

I gotta keep up on it..I only have a 6 foot plow on a Jeep Wrangler...it does good...but anything over 6 inches it gets hard to push....so I will be in and out all day/night...

Like Mike, Jill has everything set at the house so I can stop in and get drink and food...then I hope tomorrow we can just hang out.....

stay safe my friends..

Steve

unfortunately i dont remember the blizzard of '78 - i was one year old!

i walk to work - and have my snow boots, carhartt jacket, thermals, gloves and mittens.

i just back from my lunch break - took some pics of the snow falling...  its cold and windy...  not much accumulation yet - maybe an inch?  forecast shows 24" by tomorrow afternoon.

i dont think we are getting out early, ship commits - 13,000 prints on the schedule.  they did cancel the overtime shift tonight and tomorrow.  it should make for an interesting monday.

I have a wrangler always wondered if it could plow, but afraid of burning the tranny. But sounds like you are doing it  successfully. I did a crap load of plowing in the day working for the cemetery, in the winter I used to take the back hoe to business across the city and dig out parking lots for some big bucks, my percentage after the cemeteries was like 100$ per parking lot.

A buddy just texted us from the south just to give us a dig. It's OK, I was born here. When I was a kid (50's and 60's) we couldn't even be sure they'd cancel school. Now they cancel 2 days early. No UPS or FedEx pickups here either. Ah well, going home, hunker down and wait for the 1st snowblowing shift, somewhere around a foot usually.

Grumpy old guy...

Here is the one to cheer you up :

Wife texts husband on a cold winter’s morning:
"Windows frozen, won't open."

Husband texts back:
"Gently pour some lukewarm water over it."

Wife texts back 5 minutes later:
"Computer really screwed up now.”

I think we should revisit this conversation mid July when it's 120 down south and in the 70's here!
Until then, stay warm and safe!
We got some snow already and more is coming. Not as bad as further east, but it's coming.

Not too much down here yet. The shop is only a few minutes down the road but I'm already at home and working on artwork on the laptop.

The girlfriend is watching a sex in the city marathon. I'm thinking about heading back to the shop and getting snowed in.

Being snowed in with some good movies and lots hot buttered popcorn not a bad deal, as long as you got some electric and heat.  I would always leave Mass early as to not get stuck up there and down south here...I like the warm air.

we have about a foot or more at the moment, it was really wet snow this morning but now it's the fresh powder, HUGE flakes.... the good stuff...the whole city here is pretty much shut down...

snowmobiles would be fun, but they nail you on the registration fees, and then you need a place to ride it. we rented some in the adirondaks a few years back, went out on the lakes, that was a ton of fun...

Getting hammered here on Long Island.  Quad carb is gelled up with last years gas, started the new used snowblower and tried to make some pavement appear and it lasted 45 seconds before the auger stopped.  Went to get dinner at the diner with my wife and son and had to wait for all the yuppies with the camaros and mustangs to make it up the hill,  nice to have 4 wheel drive, who's laughing now.... So we make it into the diner and there is a girl at the front door around 21 and upset.  She is waiting for daddy to come and pick her up.  Her dad comes in a heating oil repair truck (working guy) and she proceeds to tell him that he is driving her car home and not the van.  He says, I cannot drive two cars at once and asks the owner of the diner if he could leave his daughters new 50k mercedes in the parking lot.  He of course says yes but to pull it around back.... Has anyone ever seen the commercial with the mercedes stuck in the snow???  maybe they should have them because the wheels probably look nice, but they suck in the snow.   I wish I could be there tomorrow when she shows up with her poodle and uggs on to find that her mercedes is under a 10 foot pile of snow..... So I remember that the mower place is open 24 hours on days like this because they service everything, so I jump into the truck and head over that way only to find that the phone number was disconnected because they are out of business....... off to lowes in the morning.  Everyone have a safe weekend...

He brad pushing three feet now probably more this storm is extreme, already saved done stranded motorist that got stuck on the road near by she was nearly out of gas by time me and a neighbor got to her car and lead her to our building. Snow drifts are easily five feet right now and expecting worse, it's a failed storm and to answer your question two feet is far far from normal.

Turns out my little town of Wallingford got the record amount of thirty five inches, snow was falling at four to five inches an hour. Its surreal more like something you see happen in the Rockies not connecticut.

Pictures of my front parking lot, land lord already told us maybe two days till they can get a back hoe in to clear it out, some brave souls are already clearing their cars. I measured one drift at seven feet insane.

Hey, this became a long thread. My house looks pretty much like Mike's pix. My town listed 28 inches on the news, 30 in the town the shop is in. No big deal except for 3 hours of moving snow, alone. However, the wife was making good food, so I got my reward after I finished. The main roads in our town were fine by yesterday. Nothing at all like '78, so all in all, not so bad, pretty lucky. There are plenty of folks with coastal flooding and no power.

Your lucky steve nothing is back to normal down here yet. Me and the owner came to work today, we could only park about 100 yrds away then have to trek through three feet to get to the building. Property management will not answer any calls so no idea when if ever they will come with a pay loader and open this area up. Most roads are barely touched yet, all they have done is one strip down the middle so with out some kind of 4 wheel you are stupid to be out. We are screwed absolutely no deliveries for god knows how long with lots of dead lines to be done, all we can think of is going to the UPS hub and picking up there but we cant lug dozens of boxes through a foot ball length of crap.

You should be throwing that much too, lost income/production will cost you more than that.  I didn't say call one either, I said throw some money at one.  LOL  Meaning see him, wave big green backs at him.  BOOM.  Used to get our driveway done in PA the exact same way, for less than our neighbors paid the guy for doing his.  :)

Its not an option Brandt, this is a big commercial building with 12 units. There is a long entrance way just to get to the parking lot, and most importantly even if it was cleared the road itself is not. What you are not getting tho is that we are dealing with the worse snowfall in our history not a meager foot of snow or whatever, plows them selves are useless it is either heavy machinery or nothing, you could run around with cash all day long but you wont get anything for it since the few machines out there are all bought and paid for, in other words get in line. On top of that many of the private guys are being contracted by the Gov which takes even more resources away from the private sector.

I'm with ya Sam, but, if they don't clear any sidewalks, then it is pretty dangerous for the kids who walk, if there are still any.

Sam which way do you want it to be? Should they spend billions on what ifs then have everyone complain about the taxes or do what they have to when the disaster hits? See my point?

Sam here is something crazy to think abouot, nearly half the equipment in the whole state has broken down due to the extreme work, they are at a point where they have to call in out side help, I really do not mind because they have to get raods open which is more important than some businesses getting a few extra days off.

Anyways attached is a couple pics in the first one you cant really tell except for the popped tile but our roof is sagging bad, ten feet above the ceiling tiles is the girders and the hanging ceiling is attached to that, when the roof sags the ceiling tiles shows it clearly. In the second picture tho is whats scaring us, you cant tell well from pics but those struts holding the HVAC trunk are all buckling, we never seen that before s guess what we are doing today? Yep the owner just left he is getting an extension ladder and some extra people and we are going to clear off our Units roof. Its a must because we just heard the commercial building down the road lost half their roof, right now it is pouring and three feet of snow is soaking up the water and quadrupling in weight and being a flat roof and clogged gutters the water is going no where. Oh fun!

Mike

I want ( which i think a lot of people do ) is for them to be responsible with MY money.  It is obvious our local, state and federal gov't does not know who to budget anything.  Is this a freak storm...yep, but on the flip side why are they not prepared?

I know if I ran my business like the gov't I would be in jail and bankrupt..well the gov't is one of those now and heading the other way soon...

BTW.  I know my entire neighborhood looks awesome because WE made it happen not the gov't...but then I went to help my Brother in Law do some of the properties he owns and I see the section 8 people sitting on the porch drinking and smoking vs. giving a helping hand to get the neighborhood back in order...but then again they are entitled to free housing, smokes and booze...

mike, this sounds funny, but is there anyway to unclog the gutters?  They should make a heat pad that you could stick to the gutters to keep them open to the water that flows through the snow can exit.

the only other thing you could do is take out some tiles and CRANK the heat in the office.  most metal buildings aren't insulated that well.  Ours plenum gets freaking boiling in the summer.

Good luck and I would spend as little time as possible in that building.

Forgot to take some pics but we are rocking it! Brad its a flat roof with corrugated lanes running perpendicular, their is an extremely slight pitch and the water is supposed to run into a weeping system along the edge but the problem is the snow pack has all possible lanes for the water to travel blocked.

I set up a home made plumb bob inside and so far after clearing a ten foot wide lane the bob came up about half an inch. Our efforts are getting the other tenants thinking and some are up doing there sections as well, BTW one unit is 3,900 square feet but very narrow so we have to slide the snow from the middle out. The owner brought his wheel barrow, I took all the harware off except the handles and now we can slide it to the edge.

Throwing a $100 bill at a guy with a plow will go a long way.

The guy behind you will throw two $1000 bills at him, its impossible to line up anyone with a loader right now everyone is booked.

Some make a excuse, some make a way ;)

printing shirts isn't worth dying in a collapsed building.

Thawing it from the bottom is the only way of getting it out.  Our roof has a huge gutter on the back only, it's easy to get to and clear, I wouldn't have to get on the roof.  Ours does have a slight pitch to it though.

Good luck.

Just finished for the day, we did about twenty feet wide the full width of the building. My back is toast.

Back Hoe finally arrived this A.M. Should take him the whole day minimum to just get the parking lot done, it will take them even longer to do the back and all the load docks, not to mention wide enough for semis, and avoid everyones utilities to boot. Schools in my town are reopening Friday, kids are going to lose one of their vacations for sure.

Why don't you wave a couple green backs at the schools, you know, get things done.
