Title: Standard art width?
Post by: Denis Kolar on April 08, 2011, 06:54:58 AM
I have an order that is an mixture of all sizes S-XL. I was wandering is there a standard for a art width that would look good on Small and on X-large shirts?
I was thinking about 10" or 10.5".

Thanks

Also, is there a standard for youth shirts?
(while I'm already asking?)

In the end, I leave it up to the customer, but of course, they usually ask what I think.
12" wide is usually the widest I go,!0" the narrowest.
If the job has more small and medium (or ladies) than large and larger, I'll suggest 11".
My standard boards fit to youth medium (on all shirts but those huge Gildans), and I will put up to 12" on them if only a few.
If I have to go all the way down to youth small or extra small, 10.5".

It's always a compromise when doing a wide assortment of sizes, so you have to play it by ear.

Same here.  If the run has more smaller sizes I run a 10 inch.....  If it is heavier on the 3XL's I will go 12 inch.

Thanks Frog.

I didn't really address this, but it's a similar answer. "It all depends"
If they are mostly medium and smaller, I may go with a, 8-9", but if larger, 9-10.5"

I don't even consider mine HUGE by most standards, but I'm all about fillin' up a shirt. Most of my stuff is 14-14.5" wide and around 15" tall. That will fit on a kids medium (it wraps around but that's ok!) and still look good on a 3-4x shirt. I figure if you're paying me to make you look good, no reason it shouldn't stand out! Even the pocket logo is around 4 3/4" wide instead of an inch narrower. Center chest is usually around 10"....

I spent seven years at Andy's in Concord, CA (lotsa Tedder stuff) Car shows and drag races are much more "in your face" than Buena Vista PTA.

Almost everything we print is 15 inches wide for large backs.  We print 15x17 as our "standard max size".  Our press does oversized easily as well.  So we offer up to 15x23 in oversized printing, which we charge extra for.  Front chest stuff generally depends on the type of look they are going for,  but 8-15 inches.  Left chest of course being much smaller 3-5 inches.

Thanks guys.
I forgot to mention, manual printer and 20x24" screens.
15x17 is out of the question, my max is 12.5x13 for my customers. I might go up to 12.75x15.5 for extra money, but that's all :)

when we only had a 13x19 printer and 20x24 screens, about 12.5 x 15 is all we did (unless it was a wide design and i could do 'landscape' on the printout since the pallets were 15" wide i could sometimes get 14.25 if it was no taller than 12....which i think is acceptable for most of the world--seems like all of our customers are 5xl's LOL)

I have a customer that orders embroidery from me. His order is a few XL, a bit more 2XL and a bunch of 3-4-5XL's. All of it for office people, so that can not tell me that they like baggy clothes :)

I do a lot of 38cm ~15" for the band-type shirts.

10 - 12 wide by 15 tall here, with almost no call ever for really large, like 15, though we can go 17" square, but really, once a year maybe...

Interesting question with no solid answers.

Most designs or concepts that land on my desk tend to one extreme:
Either really wide and short, or really tall and thin ( typing that, it sounds ridiculous ).

I try to scale according to the middleground of the garment order, which gives some
leeway on the inevitable 'other' sizes that will always appear after the fact ( and mess you up if you didn't allow for it ).
Hope that helps some.

In a similar vein, I was just  working on art for an order of T-s, and then they went and threw me a curve, and added Hoodies down to small,
Of course, I had to explain just how little room there is because of the pouch pocket.

Also, in an unrelated additional headache to explain, the T's are white, the hoodies are navy, the design includes a skeleton, so we have some other issues as well.

Just finished a job today that covered LG-XXXXXL The original art was done 8 years ago and was 11" wide. I beefed it up to fit those extra Xs that weren't there 8 years ago (haven't printed the job since). The larges, XLs & XXLs were "well covered" but the 3,4 & 5 Xs looked real nice with a 15" wide by just under 19" tall print.... the 3Xs were peeeerfect. Da Big Bruddahs will be happy :)
I don't believe there is a standard size anymore... I like to let the artwork and the customers wallet decide. ;)

Also.... "Chadwick"... who are you and what have you done with the real Chadwick?!!? ;)

Really good to see a "regrouping" of sorts here!

I murdered and buried him some time back.
Funny thing is, he's still here.

I gotta come visit you Doug, I bet I'd be happy no matter what while hangin' out in Hawaii.

Yeah, I gotta cheer up. Sorry about that.
Cheerz.
