I'm curious why you wouldn't try to sell the whole business? You should be able to make more if you include your website and customers and employees? Why wouldn't an entrepreneur want to purchase an established business for ~$40k?

Off topic answer, but no one in their right mind would by for a business like ours greater than the value of the equipment.  Buy the clientele?  They have no real value to you as there is no certainty they continue to purchase from you.  How many times have you seen a successful restaurant go under after a change in ownership?  Happens quite often.

In short, if someone is selling a turn key shop and has their clientele listed as a value, run from the deal.
If Barbie is so popular, why do you have to buy her friends?

Agreed. My boss is retiring soon and told me he'll just sell me his equipment, doesn't want anything for the business because he can't guarantee that his clients will stay with me.

It happens all the time.  I am sure tony knows more about some of the larger shops around here buying smaller ones.  It can be done, and most businesses aren't purchasable frankly because most everything is in the boss's head.  When a key person leaves, it's a scramble.  But there are businesses that are worth more than just the equipment FYI.

Of course this is coming from a guy that paid $250K for a screen printing business and our CPA said it was worth double that.

So when you bought it was it worth = to the depreciated value of equipment? The CPA valued it twice what you payed?

I'm curious because I'm actually planning to build my business to sell it.

Sorry for being off topic, OP you have some sweet gear!
