Scrutiny over your solids trap system with your City?
« on: September 24, 2012, 07:50:26 PM »
So, I am looking at a filtration system (solids trap) for under the wash out booth. When I applied for re-zoning at our building down town, The Water lines department were up on needing a drain trap for solids with screen print shops. So he asked to see the plans. I provided him with some reference that I got from a few of our discussions on here and contacted that one guy who had pictures.

Turns out that what I provided was a good and they were impressed by the home made design....but not passing for them. They require something proven and industrial that is supported with an engineering diagram for approval.

Since I am in a commercial building zoned for industrial and retail, I am required to have a specific level of filtration device based on my estimated amount of screen washing per week. The minimum is 12-20  (GPM) or Gallons Per Minute.  This determines the size of my filtration device or more so, my tank.  They suggested to use one that would be approved for sure since most restaurants and such use the same thing. The name brand given was a Zurn Wilking Grease Trap.  Ranging in the area of $400-$600.00  I checked out another name that was mentioned being BLACKLINE and that is $1486.00 once shipped. So, if this grease trap does the job and will be approved easily, then maybe it's something worth keeping printers up on.

Nice.  I have no idea how these work but my buddy has a small one in his coffee and sandwich shop (very little grease there but, as with yourself, needed for code), I should check it out.

I always wondered why they charged so much for the industry specific ones that are little more than a box with a pump and a couple filter carts.  Must be folks out there in a hurry to get approved who just pay it for code reasons.
