For even softer discharge UBs try ratios of base and white. Depending on the shirt brand you can use 75% base to 25% white. It will minimize the hand.

Never thought of that. Will it still be pretty bright white?

Again depends on brand. Not titanium white but usually good enough as many folks prefer the softness over the brightness.
If you are over printing with plastisol it should be fine.

Excited about the CCI pigments here.  I'd like to start out with a single brand of discharge/wb if possible, minimize the learnin' curve.

On Wilflex PCs, assuming the same rules apply for WB as the Epic Plastisols- these go a very, very, very long way.  Hyper-concentrated stuff compared to rfu systems and 12-20% (max) pigment to base.

I find it odd that distro's keep trying to sell gallons of the PCs or, like GSG, refuse to breakdown their gallons into quarts.  We might be able to capitalize on maybe Bright Yellow by the gallon but quarts for the rest.

here's another we printed before, but had to go on the gray background now. It is 4CP with an underbase and hi-white. It's hard to tell from the image, but I was very happy with it. You can even see the rain coming down sideways, some very fine lines. The color is off a little, but close enough. Top is the poster, bottom the print. We ran the 200 or so pieces yesterday.

Dan did a spectacular job building the underbase from the seps.

Yes, we've won our share of awards, and yes, I've tested stuff and read the scientific papers, but ultimately take everything I say with more than just a grain of salt! So if you are looking for trouble, just do as I say or even better, do something I said years ago!

Pierre, may I ask why you chose to do that job in 4CP vs. Simprocess?

Orion,

'two main reasons:
1. we printed it 4CP on white before, so all the sampling was done (it still took almost 6 hours, but better than a couple of days it would take to get it approved if we were starting from scratch!).

2. The image is of an oil painting and Dan thought that we would get more of the detail out with a 4CP than with sim. You can see the canvas texture throughout the image. (main reason we did 4CP the first time around).

We did eliminate the second black ink to accommodate the banner color and it does show. The contrast is not quite there as it would have been with another darker black. Unfortunately, with an 8 color press that was all we had.

7 colors
230 underbase and highlight white
305 CMYK and banner spot color.
55lpi at 22.5 deg

Union Process inks, wet on wet.
EZ Frames
55 triple duro for white, 80 triple for CM, 70 single for Y, K and spot (used to control the amount of ink being laid down).

am I missing anything?

Pierre,

Nice work. The print looks sharper than the poster. I don't know how you are getting 4CP to print on a underbase with out it starting to look muddy after 50 or so shirts. I am sure your using a halftone underbase but still. Are you flashing the underbase?
